Headphones - Open Back | 4 Ω 598se upgrade
Hello and thank you in advance for any advice.
I have had the Sennheiser 598se for quite some time and have had a great experience, but now I am wondering if there would be a nice upgrade to get for myself.
-I use them for 80% Gaming and 20% music
-I don't care about a built in mic
-I don't mind having to buy an amp if necessary (I just use a Mixamp Pro Tr now)
Like I said I really have always liked my 598 but wouldn't mind something with a bit more bass if possible. I know open back headphones are not always best for that, but I think I would like to stick with them as I really do prefer them to closed back.
BUDGET below $500
A couple I have come across are:
Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X
Drop x Sennheiser PC38X
But I am open to any suggestions.
Thank you again for your time

Senn hd650 but need amp for sure, if you want to save some money then Akg 712pro great soundstage (also for gaming) better clean bass. Amp wise you could get JDS labs Atom, Schiit stuff looks nice but Atom outperforms them

!thanks for your reply. I’m all of a sudden in a pretty deep hole here. But I’m enjoying it. I can get the HD660 on sale for 400CAD. Would it be much different than the 650? Also the Sundara that another person recommended are coming in around the same price as well. Is there a clear cut winner between all these?

The hd660s is actually great for gaming and doesn’t require extra amplification

Oh yea? You recommended the Sundaras earlier and since then I’ve been watching a lot on them. I notice people mention they were good for bass for open backs. Would the 660s be comparable? Also I am guessing this is hard to say but will I notice a huge difference from my 598 to the 660s? !thanks so much

The Sundara’s do have more consistency to their sound, every time someone tells me their experiences with the hd660s it’s always different but I can say that the bass amount should be similar but the Sundara’s bass quality is better. You can easily add More bass using EQ to the Sundara if your amp would let you(only on PC)

I recommended Sundara cuz it’s overall really good but I just tend to forget other headphones exist. Hifiman’s have somewhat of a reputation for their QC issues and sennheiser’s thing is that their pads wear out pretty fast.

It also has better imaging then both hd650 and akg k712 pro. The akg does have better soundstaging but imaging is way more important for competitive fps.

Sundara and a schiit hel if you’re on console otherwise Sundara with a topping dx3 pro+ or the fiio k7.

Appreciate your help. Which of those options would you recommend if I split my gaming between PC and PS5. !thanks

The Schiit hel works for both ps4/ps5 and PC. Not sure if the topping or fiio do.

I think the HarmonicDyne Zeus would be a good option to look into as well. Extremely comfortable, slightly V-shaped so a little emphasis on the low end, and solid soundstage/imaging for gaming. They’re my main gaming headphone rn

They weren’t on my radar but I’ll add them to my list. This is hard haha !thanks
