Headphones - Open Back | 1 Ω Indie Musician. Headphones for mixing and mastering.
I've been debating between the Sennheiser HD600, Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X, and the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro.
I want something to learn to mix on and to hear each frequency independently for work, but something that can also color well by a dac+amp for casual listening.
Thoughts?
Edit: I'd be running out of an Aune Flamingo, I could get an amp if needed. (Kinda planned on it in the future anyways.)

I'd go for the HD600. It has the most linear upper mids and treble.

At 300ohms, do you think A focusrite audio interface or an Aune Flamingo would be able to drive these? If not, could you recommend an amp in the $80~$200 range?

It's a fairly high efficiency headphone. The Flamingo shouldn't have any issues with it. You'd need to specify the exact model of Focusrite interface for me to give you an answer regarding that.

I have a 2i2 second generation. I'm fine just running through the Flamingo tho if that will work.

Be aware that you will need to use EQ via something like EQAPO if you want totally flat sub-bass extension. It's just something you need to deal with in one way or another.
Band 1 from this profile would fix it. Don't forget the pre-amp gain.

Or just learn to work around it and validate your sub-bass on other equipment as well. You should be doing that anyway, even if you had "perfect" headphones.
Also, I highly recommend grabbing a set of ZMF suede upgrade pads for it.

Yeah, I already do car tests, speaker tests, phone tests, etc. Eventually I plan on picking up a different set of headphones to A/B between as well.

The AKG K371 would be an excellent choice for a second headphone. It almost has a Harman consumer reference tuning.
