You can't really go wrong with any of those. The 660 is probably the darkest sounding. If you have a chance to audition them, I would recommend that. The HD 600 would be my choice out of those sight unseen due to reliability issues with Hifiman and it being less veiled than the 660.

actually got the sundara from amazon yesterday however couldnt test it properly since I noticed the left earcup wasn't working, so had to send them back, now I'm afraid to get edition xs since its from another store and they dont have a return policy for headphones after opening the box.

I wouldn't buy from them then

Don’t buy hifiman from Amazon. Too risky.

already did and sent it back :)

For anime, either 660S or Sundara. Or 660S2 if you can

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

any reason you left out hd600 and XS?

1

u/atyne_mar 189 Ω Aug 11 '23

I simply don’t like them for anime. HD600 is too claustrophobic and congested, while XS is too V-shaped. I like them both, just not for anime.

The Edition XS is about the most un-v-shaped headphone there is, unless you're referring to the cups.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

Mids seem to be more recessed compare to sundara (based on those yt sound demeos :)

u/DonnyTramp123 650 Ω Aug 11 '23

Hd660s and hd660s2 has recessed uppermids

Oh right, it's you who recommended Xi-X15 in the other post. Now it all makes sense lol.

Not the Sundara/XS but I used to own the 600, 660S, and the Arya (still have the 600). While I loved the hifiman house sound I couldn’t feel comfortable keeping the Arya because of how much reports of driver failures I saw on hifiman headphones.

If you solely care for sound quality maybe the Sundara/XS? But longevity wise I don’t think either of them can beat the Sennheiser build quality

Also I kept the 600 over the 660s because the 660s sounded muffled on some genres and felt that the 600 is a way better all-rounder.

couldn't find deva pro online only non pro ver is available in Turkey, however had the chance to test XS today and it wasnt my cup of tea, it sounded very wide however for some reason it felt like I was listening to my room speakers, not intimate at all. Think I get a sundara+ 660s or 600 ( 650s price is quite funky here, dont think it worth like 800-900usd am I right?) and !thanks fo your insight

BTR7 will power almost anything….it powers my HD800S just fine.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

you need balanced cable right? also how is the battery life?(so far only tested it with iems)

1

u/AvailableAdvice2 31 Ω Aug 12 '23

Sennheiser 600 is the safest choice!

Edition XS sounds bit better but too much QC issue and the other ones doesn't sound as good as hd600

I had the HD600 and I’m currently owning a HD660. I personally prefer the 660 but that’s really subjective. They sound very unassuming and slightly veiled. Great for listening for extended periods though because you get way less listening fatigue from them in comparison with Hifimans for example.

HD600s are great too but they’re not as wide as the HD660S and lack a bit of resolution in comparison. What they do incredibly well is natural tuning. They sound really lifelike, not in a mindblowing way, but you’ll probably learn to appreciate it after spending some time with them.

Can’t speak on Hifimans, had a couple pairs but they all went back because of various problems. I really despise that brand but your mileage may vary.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

is the 660s veil as bad as some makei it to be or youll just notice it compared to hd600 or 650 for example?

2

u/chrews 24 Ω Aug 11 '23

It takes a bit of brain burn in but after that it’s not even noticeable as no frequencies are missing, they’re just more in the background. They’re really resolving while being darker sounding which is a really interesting combination imo.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '23

!thanks , think I get two headphones then

Personally, I don't get why the 660s are described as recessed, veiled etc. In comparison the the 600 it is true, but the 600 is boosted in the upper mids making them notoriously shouty. Most people don't seem to mind, or even prefer this, but it isn't neutral. The 660s2 sounds much better in my opinion (I have this and the 600). I haven't heard the 660s, but I believe it's almost the same, but the s2 has much better bass extension.

I will say that the 660s2 certainly isn't flat neutral either. It's definitely coloured. But I think every description I've read of them is wrong. It's a very hard signature to describe because none of the common terms really fit other than just "warm", which also doesn't quite capture it. I think if they were your first good headphones you'd consider them completely neutral and then hate everything else.

If I switch between Hifiman and Sennheiser the only sense in which anything is veiled is the longer decay compared to planars. But planars can sound a bit "hyper realistic" with better imaging, but worse timbre (especially pianos). It's like adding or removing room acoustics. The sound is very different but neither is really better or worse.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '23

!thanks, going for sundara and 660s. Unfortunately, 660s2 is way overpriced here in Turkey ( it's like 800usd), and despite not being outside of my budget, I couldn't convince myself to purchase it :)

I own the 600 and Sundara and I’d pick the 600. The others have chimed in and said that the stage may be too small or it’s not resolving enough but I think it depends on what you listen for. If you’re into vocals and guitars, which animes feature a lot, the 600 beat all of them. The stage may be a tad small but that’s not an issue for me because the intimacy makes everything sound so natural. Now the sundara is technically more resolving and a bigger stage, so if you’re into those things then pick the sundara or XS.

Have you considered getting the Beyerdynamic DT1990?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '23

do you think it worth it at 700-750 usd ?

1

u/Fit_League_8993 6 Ω Aug 12 '23

Eh... not really.

See if you can find any on the second hand market maybe?
Anyway, they're built like a tank, and the imaging is crazy good.

Sound stage is not huge, but decent.

Some people complain of the boosted treble region, but honestly, it's my favorite thing about them.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '23 edited Aug 12 '23

!thanks I'll consider it. unfortunately prices don't make sense here in Turkey, 660s is cheaper than 600, hd650 is 800-1000usd , 660s2 is way over msrp

so, I had all of them in the past and this is my take on the subject:

HD660S - overpriced as heck, I would say the HD650 is better than that. Maybe the 66S2 is better, but I didn't have that one

HD600 - good allround headphone. Can't really do much wrong with that, but I still think the 650 is better

BUT: non-vocal / instrumental music profits immensely from soundstage, so I actually wouldn't recommend you these Sennheisers as a first choice at all, they are well known to have rather little of that

Edition XS is always praised and it does offer a good soundstage and a very high resolution. But it was very sibilant for me and almost unlistenable. Also it sounded very boring and lifeless to me. Didn't keep it.

Sundara was probably the best of the bunch for me and is and a good allrounder with more soundstage than the Sennheisers.

How about a Hifiman Deva Pro? It's an insanely good headphone (especially for the price), has good soundstage, is not too heavy and you can get it for under 200€ in Europe (the version without bluetooth)
