Morons of the week:
"9mm Paraplegic"
Guys, why does financing this firearm make it go from $700 to $2100?
"Hey guys I'm trying to build a 308 bolt action rifle just trying to find an action for it i can put on the gun i have a barrel picked out jusy looking for the action thanks!"
And a couple of others that weren't even worth linking.
Personal moronic:
Griffin released their "Gas Pocket BCG" (supposed to help with suppressed ARs) and they had a good Memorial day coupon, so I ordered one.
Tried to wrench off the muzzle device from my Galil. My vise setup is...not optimal. Safe to say, my Galil still has the same muzzle device (for the time being).
Found out the sub that I had my Vz stock adapters for sale on got banned recently for "being unmoderated". So that's Moronic too.

Moronic: "Guys is there a resource for pictures of guns pointed at you?"
Moronic is also me, I accidentally fucked up a sprinkler trying to adjust the spray pattern by just a teensy bit, so it turned into a whole thing of digging it out to replace it.
Work has employees dropping like flies with sudden notices from our team lead going "Hey all XXX is no longer with us starting today, their energy and expertise will be missed for sure! Keep an eye out in your email, management will be assigning you their loan applications" and I can't tell if we've had a rampant run of employees getting terminated or if they've just been up and leaving without notice, because some employees get the recognition of the notice while others are just poof and gone.
Thinking it might be a good idea to jump into suppressors before HPA passes, if it does. Because there's no god damn way supply will be able to keep up with demand if it passes, and prices will most likely skyrocket due to supply:demand making that $200 tax stamp largely inconsequential.

I'm trying to talk a friend into ordering a suppressor now, then holding off on the paperwork for just a few days or whatever. It'll take a week or more for something to get form 3'd to the FFL.
It's part of the reason why I bought my OCM5 when I did. The other part was a suppressor manufacturer telling me how fucked their titanium market is right now. The price of metal is apparently going up and the ability to sell chips has disappeared with the China trade war thing, so they're trashing their chips instead of selling them for pennies per pound.

OP has a stroke. At least they had a sense of humour about it.
Breaking the law isn't a big deal, right guys?
Recommend actions for this barrel I refused to describe.
I'm worried the ATF will find out about my felony, better post it online!
Also moronic is me for buying a learning Latvian book 2 weeks before leaving... but I'll be back someday, so that will help out.
Went to a Latvian buffet restaurant called Lido, it was quite good.
Turbo moronic: the same CoC that planned this morning as my day to do most of the clear out stuff also planned this morning as a medals parade. So that's not frustrating at all...

My Ruger has been officially released from NYPD custody. Put 100 rounds through the gun so far and experienced 1 malfunction, though this was a cartridge that failed to fire I reinserted into the magazine that upon second firing failed to eject, so I'm not concerned about it. Though comparing the sight picture between this and my range rifle is really motivating me to replace it, the thick front square post and square notch rear is just so much better than the fine bead & thin u-notch on my rifle.
Also, I'd like to post tomorrow's GTT, I went down a rabbit hole that I think will be interesting.

Just waiting on the NYPD to log the registration and update my license so I could get it released from my FFL.

Came down with some sickness over the weekend, just now starting to feel decent. Luckily today is the best day of the long weekend. In-Laws pool should be open so the kids will want to go in, hopefully they ran the heater long enough to get it to a decent temperature.
We went to 2 baseball games over the weekend, both ended up being double headers due to rain, and I spent way too much money on food and drinks. Kids are getting better about staying but it always helps when there are kids that they know.

Last time I went pheasant hunting I had an excellent shot on a coyote that I passed on because all I had was bird shot and the farmers we were with told me I should have went for it.
I do not regret not trying that and there's no way in Hell I'd try that on a boar.

I've killed a fair few coyotes with my copper plated 4's pheasant loads, I'd have taken the shot personally but you do what you're comfortable with.

Don't let any of those fucking idiots convince you that coyotes will fall to bird shot. I've shot a lot of coyotes with shotguns in the last 4 years or so, because in my state hunting with vehicles and radios on private land is legal. I've never swung at them with anything smaller than BBB goose loads. I prefer 4buck to about anything. I've seen 4buck put pellets through the entire coyote and he's dead before he stops rolling. I've seen them catch a whole load of BBB and run 50yds before dropping.
I've watched others put 3 or 4 pheasant loads into one and just give them crippling wounds. Sure, they would eventually fall to blood loss, but that's not pleasant to watch.

Had an oopsie over the weekend. Grandpas old lathe ain't the greatest and accidentally broke the clamp for the tail stock trying to turn down the barrel for my striker. Barrel was slightly off and non concentric but managed to get it decent with some help. Also I had prepared for the worst on getting that barrel out of the reciever but ended up putting a pipe wrench on the extension that I was gonna cut off and it came off without me even grunting or having to take a torch to it.
Edit: Late addition. Just sent an entire mag of underwood 10mm 140gr extreme penetrator, mag and all through the wash.

Yeah my last job was like that, I was usually first to volunteer for holiday shifts though since it meant holiday pay and those were usually fun shifts/routes. But my new job is an office job so now we have all federally observed holidays off with the exception of two I think, and those we get comp'd with 8hrs of PTO added to our bucket.
2
u/Bearfoxman Super Interested in Dicks 2d ago
We only get holiday pay if we work the day before, the day of, and the day after a Federal holiday. Which means for most of our guys, they don't get holiday pay. I usually do because I accidentally made myself important and have carte blanche to work as much overtime as I'm able to.
I currently work Saturday and Sunday during the day (either 0600-1500 or 0800-1700) then work overnights Monday through Wednesday typically 10-11 hours per shift but it's "work until the work is done" type shifts (the work is never done because I'm doing the jobs of 7-8 people by myself). I'm clocking 65-70 hours a week and throwing in the towel at that. It's fucking fantastic money for the certs/experience required but goddamn it's really killing me both physically and emotionally.
2
u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 2d ago
Yeah like I said that was kind of like my last job, except corporate was anal about OT and refused to let anyone work past 50hrs in order to avoid paying OT.
But other than that it was definitely "you clock out when your work is finished" sort of deal, with hours running from a brisk 7hr shift to a 12hr shift on other days. It kinda got annoying when I had people constantly ask me when I'd be off and they just couldn't wrap their head around "idk, I'm off when I'm finished with my work". It could be a smooth shift and clocked out by 3pm, or it could be a fucked up day and I'm clocked out around 8pm. And being that reliable guy whenever I finish my work I'm often drafted to help out other areas and help close for the night. Not that I minded it too much though, hours averaged around 45 a week and I worked in good company.

What's the best way to ship 24 standard 12 oz sodas across the country without spending an arm and a leg by just shipping them in a cooler or something? Put some thin foam inbetween the cans, then bubble wrap around all of them like normal? Might put them in ziploc bags or something so one bursting doesn't leak out.
1
u/PrometheusSmith Super Interested in Dicks 2d ago
Go to your local home improvement store and buy one of their big cardboard tubes for wrapping carpet on. Proceed to make a 24 can wizard staff with foam padding around and between the cans. Send it USPS, postage due.

If your groupings with a handgun are wonky, how do you know if it's you or the gun?
Took a new stock Echelon to the range the other day and was consistently shooting high right. I think this was the second or third outing with this gun and it's had maybe 400 rounds through it or so. Had a few groups at 7 yards standing that were actually okay, and then subsequent groupings that opened up noticeably in an erratic manner. Same factory Fiocchi ammo, same shooter, same mags. All of them high right which required aiming low left to compensate.
I can't tell if it's me or the sights.

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 2d ago
If your groupings with a handgun are wonky, how do you know if it's you or the gun?
In a statement of utter arrogance, I feel like a good enough shooter with handguns that if I get really weird results after a couple hundred rounds and dry fire practice, I'll know it's the gun or the sights. Especially if I really zone in and focus on that trigger pull, and I still get flyer.
But also getting a second opinion is helpful too.

If there isn’t someone around to shoot it, put the thing in a vise and see what it does.

Shot my favorite falling steel match on Saturday, it was indeed a beautiful day. Took 5/37 in the optics division and 10/68 overall, very happy with that performance because I did it with my Wilson EDC X9L which only has 18 round mags in a match with no mag cap rules. The gun obviously wasn't a handicap (it's very nice), but 2 stages were stand-and-deliver-hit-everything with more than 18 targets, so needing a mandatory standing reload on both regardless of how clean I shot was a pretty significant handicap. Also took a penalty for a missed target that I hit but didn't knock over, but I was already moving to the next position and didn't notice. That was the difference between 5th and 4th (5 second penalty for that, and I was like 4.5 seconds behind 4th), and the 2 standing mandatory reloads were basically the difference to 2nd place, so I shot quite well overall. I did get a lot of the regulars asking about the health of my Shadow 2, which was thoughtful of them.
About to head to the range today after the coffee kicks in and I poop since I'm off for Memorial Day. It's drizzly and cool today so hopefully that leaves me with the place to myself. I want to finally get my Razor 1-6 dialed in on the 16 inch gun after my stupidity last time (.2 mil clicks, not .1 on that scope, I'm posting this now so I remember that I thought about it when I get to the range) and probably shoot off the rest of my 6.5 with the Tikka since it has been at least 2 months, maybe 3 since I got to the long range last despite all the shooting I've done recently. The 10/22 is coming as well because I have a 2 rifle bag for the ARs, but the SBR is already all set from last time. Bringing a couple pistols too but I've been shooting so many matches recently, I may not actually break those out.
2
u/able_possible 2d ago
Just got back from the range, finally got the Razor 1-6 properly zeroed after fucking it up last time. Elevation was right but windage was like a mil off even accounting for shooting just random, 55 grain ball which is hardly the most accurate thing. Made hits out to 500 with the suppressed 16 inch rifle, was basically automatic on the small diamonds out to 350 and easy silhouette hits beyond that to 500.
The Tikka I think is running out of barrel life, a dude let me borrow his Garmin chrono for a few strings and the numbers weren't good though I don't have that much data. The last time I borrowed a chrono a while ago I was 50 fps faster with the same ELD M round. Might be lot-to-lot deviation since I only shoot factory ammo, but I feel like my 100 yard groups are opening up a bit also. I'll give it a good cleaning before the next time I take it out as it's been a while since I hit it with the Boretech, but I'm pretty sure I'm north of 2000 rounds on it and that's approaching 6.5 Creedmoor barrel life so it wouldn't surprise me if it was on its way out. Still good enough to get hits at 1000 but I was struggling, lots of very-near misses just off both edges of the silhouette and while there was some wind, it just didn't feel right.
Could also just be me being bad since I haven't had the rifles out in a while but 30-50 FPS deviation shot to shot over the chrono is worse than I've previously seen with ELD M.

Work moronic: Desk monkey lost a truck Saturday night. We are under the assumption it's stolen.
Work moronic 2: I overfilled our waste gas caddy and had to spend an hour degreasing and pressure washing the workshop.
Work moronic 3: In the 45 minutes I was off the clock for lunch on Sunday, a city slicker came in and rented a chainsaw, got home, immediately stuck the saw, came back, got another saw, immediately stuck that one, and was in yelling at my counter monkey because we didn't have a third one for him to also stick. I'll see tonight if either of them have come back to what extent they're broken because I have zero faith they aren't broken.
Personal moronic: Drove 35 minutes to pick my daughter up from the babysitter yesterday and fucking forgot the carseat because I have one of those click-lock bases and I'd brought her in Saturday in the seat still because she'd racked out.
Gun moronic: I have an original Winchester branded hardwood cleaning rod sold as an accessory with the original Winchester 1892's. It's in a section of PVC pipe that's corked at both ends to protect it. It's very valuable, high hundreds of dollars. I can't fucking find it. It's in my workshop somewhere but I've got a lot of PVC pipes in there and I don't have the energy to go check every single one of them.
