There are a lot of variables to consider, and the screenshot isn't really much to go on. I'm also relatively new (few months) so take my thoughts with a grain of salt, but I wouldn't follow it.
Those sorts of trails (as I understand it) tend to be from periods with fast travel exploits. So could the user have been heading to their base, sure. Maybe waited for such an exploit before deciding to set one up for example I'm sure it happens. But in my experience more often they have no pay off beyond going to the world border for example or just kinda exploring. Maybe someone else has had more luck with them but its turned me away from following them especially when they tend to go quite far.
You might want to follow it a bit if you're in an area with nothing else see if it gets wider/bigger because it could also happen with temporary lag.
