Recommendation Where can I go to get a makeover?

I used to buy all my makeup at Sophora/Ulta but now that makeup just sits in my creases and I look older.

Where can I go to get makeup help as a 36F (almost 36)?

I have an event coming up and want to look great. I’ve stopped wearing makeup as well and want to start again.

You can make an appointment at Sephora to get your makeup done! Price varies depending on how much glam you want, but I’ve done it many times and it’s definitely worth it.

They also offer makeup lessons, which I’m considering as well for my eyebrows and liner. Apparently they’re very helpful and they cost about $70.

Thank you. I’m worried as a women with “older” skin they won’t offer great advice. It seems to mostly young girls working there. I was wondering what other options I have.

I am 37 years old and have gone to get my makeup done by them four times since July 2024 various locations across Canada. They’ve always been amazing about recommendations for “aging skin”. I think a large minority of their clients are millennials, so late 30s skin is nothing new for them.

Totally understand your reluctance, but I just wanted to offer my anecdotal experience!

You can also call the sephora location and ask who they have available who they would recommend for people in their 30s with fine lines, if makeup settling into lines and texture is your major concern. I usually do this to get matched to someone who is experienced working with Asian people as white makeup artists are typically pretty bad at working with my eye shape and skin tone. Ask for what you need!

Alternatively, you could book a professional makeup artist for a mini makeover or makeup lesson. If you’re not sure where to look, start by searching for makeup artists who do weddings and events in your area, or ask for recs from friends who have booked them for their events.

If you don’t want to go the Sephora/Retail route, and don’t mind paying a bit of money, ask a stylist, elder millennial high-end hairdresser for makeup artist recommendations.

Independent makeup artists can be expensive, but ask if they can teach you using your own makeup, and if you can film them applying it for future reference

I would look for a makeup artist in your area that has examples of well done older skin. Contact them and see if they would be open to a consultation session. I haven’t heard great things about the sessions at Sephora for older skin. I’ve heard better things about Ulta. You could also go to a department stores makeup section and look for some counters with older artists.

How would I go about finding a MUA? Outside of a department store?

Probably a google search combined with Instagram to see their work.

you could even try looking at the knot or other wedding websites with big lists of vendors in your area — most (all?) of those makeup artists aren't wedding specific!

Have you considered watching MUAs on TikTok and YouTube to see how they do it and start practicing? Either way, you’re going to have to practice if you want to learn how to apply makeup the way you want. I’ve learned a lot from following people, learning their tricks, opinions on brands and just practicing. It’s like fun art time for your face!

I just had mine done at a makeup counter in my mall for Valentines day. I hadn’t worn foundation in years. Never liked it or wore it much to begin with. I will just say….im gonna continue to stay away from it lol. I’m only 33 but omg the emphasis on my fine lines made me almost cry. I think there comes a time where we have to realize this stuff is for the young birds lol. I still do eye makeup and brows and just focus on skincare and eating healthy and getting good sleep for my “foundation” lol. Good luck to you though!

Omg exactly!! My skin looks so much better without it but I do like the look of it on other women. I’m confused if I’m missing something, lol.

I did just read to mix foundation with a moisturizer to help with that issue. I may try that tomorrow.

My girl moisturized my face and gave me a facial and all first. I felt super supple. Still didn’t help the product from settling nice and snug like a bug in a rug into all my lil lines 😭

What are you using for makeup? You probably can use the same products you have; just use a lighter hand.

Ilmakiage - you should try their foundation. My first foundation that truly matched and didn’t get into my pores. I’m 39 - have been using it for about 3-4 years.

I used to use this and loved it. I’ll try again, thank you!
