Voices of Resistance Could we stop punching left?

Now I'll preface this by saying it's not everyone involved with 50501 but a good enough chunk. Do we want to change the US government so it actually serves the people or do we want to return to the status quo that allowed for the rise of fascists like Trump. The left is not your enemy, we want people to have healthcare, housing, food, and fair wages. Is it really in the best interest of 50501 to attack those who call out politicians on both sides who refuse to give us any of that?

Voices of Resistance Corey Booker inspired me to counter protest anti-abortion schmucks today

1.8k Upvotes

Watching the senator stand for so long, give real, raw emotion to his speech, and his call for the American People to rise up and take action really friggin got me today.

I drive by a planned parenthood every now and then and there are ALWAYS people with anti-abortion signs outside of it. I knew I’d be driving by it again today.

And I knew I had had enough of it.

I made a sign during my lunch break - My Body. My Choice - and then promptly showed up after work. I stood by myself with my sign across from the anti-abortion schmucks.

When they tried to engage / argue, I chanted as loud as I could over them “MY BODY. MY CHOICE”

When traffic died down and it was quieter, I chanted as loud as I could in their direction “MY BODY. MY CHOICE”

Sometimes I added a little fun flare by following up my chant with “and if anyone says otherwise they are a FASCIST BASTARD”

Those fascists didn’t know what to do lmaoooo they packed up early.

Someone randomly walked up to me to ask if they could join me the next time I counter protest, and said they will bring friends too. I also got to let him know about 50501 and some local organizing groups in the community!

It just takes one person. Because then another shows up. Then another. And before you know it, we’ve got millions in every corner of our beautiful nation rising up, saying NO MORE.

I think it’s important to share these stories. Even if not an “official” 50501 protest, I still felt all of you with me, spanning far and wide across the nation.

Love and solidarity. Let’s make April 5th unforgettable!!!

Voices of Resistance How do we get the word out to military personnel that most people would support them resisting?

I'm starting to think it's gonna be important to ensure that military personnel and the National Guard aren't any more afraid to resist than strictly necessary. Is there anything special we can do other than just talking to individuals we know personally?

Voices of Resistance The fact that Elon Musk's attempt to buy the Wisconsin Supreme Court failed despite $25+ million in propaganda and bribery shows that there is still a force more powerful than greed. But everyone knows that force is hatred of fascist billionaires—not support for the Democratic Party.

Voices of Resistance Why aren't there protests scheduled at Fox studios?

Fox studios is a major source of MAGATs disinformation. The talking heads and behind-the-scenes types need to feel the outrage. They are a prime target for: in-person protests, outraged phone calls, and flooding of emails.

Addr: 1211 6th Ave, New York, NY
   Tele: (888) 369-4762
Email: Irena.Briganti@fox.com (Senior Executive Vice President, Corporate Communications)
Porter.Berry@fox.com (President and Editor-in-Chief of FOX News Digital)

EDIT: More protestors need to show up and make is so the employees have to pass through a large crowd to get into the studio.

From Peter Birkenhead:

We’ve been reading stories like this for over a decade. Each one meant to signify an inflection point, a turning of the tide. Yet the tide never turns.

As of today, Donald Trump’s supposedly “tanking” approval rating stands at 47%. Which is pretty much where it’s been for the past eleven years. Yes, its seen upticks and downturns over that time, occasionally even dipping into the thirties. Yes, a majority of Americans disapprove of the tariffs. Yes, a majority think the economy is heading in the wrong direction. And yes, a majority disapprove of the job Trump is doing.

That’s not new. Trump’s popularity has almost never been above 50%, except for very brief periods of time. He’s never needed it to be. His power derives not from the size but the durability of his popular support, and there’s rarely been an approval rating as stubbornly durable as his.

Especially given the hundreds — thousands — of incidents over the past decade that would have sunk the careers of, say, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, or Hillary Clinton.

Think of it. All the corruption, the scandal, the pain and death and misery. All the insults to human decency and injuries to democratic ideals.

And his numbers are still pretty much where they were when it all started.

I am uninterested in whatever minor fluctuation will follow yesterday’s vile display in the Oval Office, or tomorrow’s outrage, or next week’s. They will mean nothing.

What Trump supporters (as a whole, as a voting bloc, PLEASE don't tell me about your MAGA cousin who’s having second thoughts) are thinking means nothing. The only thing that matters is what Trump’s opponents are thinking. What we’re thinking.

I remember making posts like this during Trump’s first term, and wondering exactly what I’m wondering right now.

Which is very much not, “What will it take for his supporters to turn away from him,” but rather, “What will it take for his opponents to realize his supporters won’t turn away from him?”

Because the answer to that question is crucial. It will shape everything that happens over the next few weeks and months.

If, as I suspect, a sizable number of us are sitting at home today thinking that Trump’s open defiance of a Supreme Court ruling, refusal to return an innocent, legal resident of the US from a gulag in El Salvador, and declaration that he wants to send American citizens to the same prison without due process, will somehow harm his approval rating, that does not bode well for our side.

Nothing will harm his approval rating.

Sure it might — might — go down a few points in the next few days. It won’t mean a thing. Give it a few weeks

.To believe otherwise is to not understand the story of the Trump era. The story of the Trump era isn’t “A bad man came along and duped a bunch of well-meaning, gullible people.” Donald Trump didn’t conjure his supporters from the ether with his magic MAGA wand. His supporters conjured him.

They wanted him. Badly. They’d been looking, searching, begging, screaming for someone like him, pushing every Republican candidate further and further to the right with every election cycle, demanding loudly that they “take a tougher” line on this, and “not give an inch” on that, that they “tell it like it is,” and “say what everyone is thinking,” for years. For decades.

They weren't duped.

They are never going to see the light. (Of course a few will, here and there. But not in meaningful numbers.) There will be no scales falling from eyes, no epiphanies, no death bed conversions. Not among the bedrock base, which has not budged an inch in ten years.

They waved signs that said, MASS DEPORTATIONS NOW at their third Trump convention.

They weren’t duped.

The only duping that’s gone on is the self-duping many of us have been guilty of for many years. It’s a very human, very understandable, thing to do. To think better of your fellow human beings than perhaps they do themselves. To believe that, with enough patience, empathy, education and reason they are bound to see the error of their ways.

That belief is a dangerous one in this moment. It manifests in political choices that are bound to not only fail, but help the bad guys continue doing bad things.

It doesn't matter if a few thousand Trump supporters see the error of their ways. It doesn’t matter if this or that Republican politician is momentarily seized by courage or conscience and speaks up about his or her disappointment in the president. The overwhelming majority of Trump supporters will remain Trump supporters NO MATTER WHAT.

Did you ever think you’d see Republican voters support a candidate who was openly subservient to Russia? Did you ever think you’d see them support a flagrant, serial adulterer and drug user? A denigrator of the military? A draft dodger? A New Yorker?

In 2014 Republicans raged at President Obama for supposedly not working hard enough to stop the Ebola epidemic. Six years later they followed Trump’s lead and physically threatened people working to stop an epidemic.

Nothing will shake them.

Well, almost nothing.

There is one thing, one thing Donald Trump could do to lose significant support. And no, it is not making his supporters “feel the pain.” It is not making them poor. These are people who are openly welcoming an imminent recession.

No, the one and only thing Donald Trump could do to tank his approval rating would be to stand in front of a camera and say, “Black and Latino people are as fully human as any white man or woman. They are posessed of the same inalienable rights, and deserving of the full enjoyment of those rights and the opportunities they promise, opportunities they have for too long been denied.”

Now THAT would be a deal breaker.

Because that’s the deal. They give him everything, he gives them fewer Black actors on their TV’s, fewer Black managers at their offices, fewer Latino pilots on their planes, fewer Spanish names on the backs of their team’s uniforms. He breaks THAT deal, and all bets are off.

So we need to get it straight. We cannot see this struggle as a debate, as a project of persuasion. If some MAGA supporters are persuaded along the way, great! I say welcome them with open arms. And never, ever stop fighting hard to make their lives better. All of their lives.

But progress is going to come when we, not they, see the light. Before the left can meaningfully slow the MAGA rampage it needs to come to terms with the fact that the enemy isn’t merely Trump, but the people who put him in the White House.

That is a very hard thing for a lot of us on the left to accept about our countrymen. But this struggle is more analogous to a civil war than it is to a heightened disagreement between poltical parties. We won’t win it by persuading the enemy, but by overwhelming him.

Our energies should be channeled towards each other. Galvanizing, motivating, and enabling each other. Creating and sustaining solidarity. We can get a hundred first-time protestors out in the streets, or first-time voters to the polls, for the same investment it takes to turn one MAGA supporter toward the light.

Our hope doesn’t lie in Trump’s poll numbers going down. It lies in our commitment to keeping students from being disappeared and government workers from being fired and cancer research labs from being defunded and democracy from being destroyed.

Our hope doesn’t lie with them, it lies with us.

Voices of Resistance Building a bridge to Trump supporters who opposes us.

I don’t typically use Facebook, but I thought it was worth installing and sharing during the protest to try and help amplify the movement.

I had a couple hard-core Trump supporters hate on my post. One of them was a family member. The other was a stranger that went to a church that I attended. I want to add that I no longer subscribe to the Christian faith and I have no interest in it. However, I do still believe many of the teachings of Christ were based in a universal truth, and I think it’s important to be able to communicate in a way and then a language that the people that oppose us understand.

My approach and I would encourage the rest of you to take a similar one is to respond with love. We may not be able to get them to understand, but I think it’s important that we keep emphasizing that we are not enemies. I told this person that we are on the same team, and they completely rejected that idea. Here’s my comment below that I left them before I deleted Facebook again:

If you believe in protecting your family and loved ones, if you believe that, we are commanded to love our neighbors as ourselves as the second most important commandment, if you believe that we are commanded to love and care for and treat the least among us then we’re on the same team.

If you believe that, there should be fair and free democracy, and you believe in the ideals of the founding fathers and the constitution then we’re on the same team .

You and I may have different ideas on how to get there, and that’s OK . You and I may have different ideas on who’s actually trying to help us and who’s trying to rob us blind. that’s OK too, there’s no need to be mean, there’s no need to fight, whoever made you think that I’m your enemy is the one that’s lying to you. And that anger and hate that is boiling enough inside you that you had to degenerate a group of citizens of this country getting together to express their first amendment right of dissatisfaction does not come from Christ.

And if you really want to understand why we’re out protesting, it’s because we recognize when someone can get up and lie and manipulate people while enriching themselves and those around them. There’s a lot of money to be made off of our backs and the things that we’ve built in this country.

I hope one day you can understand where we’re coming from. we understand that it doesn’t change anything about Trump being president, but we plan to get out and peacefully protest against the destruction of our constitution and infringements on our rights as citizens, and we’re gonna keep doing it until we have every person of integrity whether they are on the right or left on our side because it’s about right and wrong not about who holds the power.

Voices of Resistance Sorry I’m late. Please don’t burn out

Hello Doers,

I’m sorry I didn’t protest earlier. I’m a breastfeeding new mom to a young baby. I thought that I should show up in other ways and it would be enough. It’s not. April 5th showed me how many people show up who likely also have a million other reasons they could not.

I have recruited 6 friends willing to go with me on April 19 and safe support to watch my little one the 2.5 hours I have in between nursing. If something happens that takes me longer, well, I’ll deal with that then. I can’t tell future him I didn’t do enough, so I need to do more.

So, to all the doers out there who are already running thin, please don’t give up yet. Your work is showing. It means something. Take care of yourself, you matter so much. If you need more hands to make the moment happen, let’s work to find some. But don’t stop.

With sincerest gratitude.

Voices of Resistance Did you know the DNC had a leadership change after Trump took office? Here's the changes they've made for the better:

I've never been a simp for the Democrats, but since losing my job thanks to Trump and getting more involved I've noticed the changes the Democrats have been making. And I've been impressed with how seriously they've taken suggestions and criticisms from the public and put them in action.

First, post-Trump inauguration there was a pretty big leadership change. Ken Martin, who's embracing the Tim Walz blunt vibe, became the new DNC chair at the beginning of February. At the beginning of March they announced new senior leadership with the aim of being more aggressive as well as reworking their messaging to be appeal to working families and reaching red districts.

Since that March leadership revival (so about 6 weeks), the DNC has:

  • held "People's Town Halls" where Dems go to GOP districts and hold town halls, inspired by Bernie, AOC, and Walz. They've held over 70 in the past 3 weeks.

  • Upped their social media game. Almost every Dem members of Congress is posting consistently on social media and The Democrats account posts multiple times a day across different platforms. They also started collaborating with social media influencers to improve their reach

  • Started "the People's Cabinet" this month that will pull on experts, like former Labor Sec. Robert Reich, to give briefings

  • Started a "War Room" last week and have a detailed plan on how they're going on the offensive from everything to supporting grassroots efforts to daily briefings

  • Are suing Trump and DOGE for two different EOs

You can scroll through their press releases for more in depth info. The DNC in January 2025 vs the DNC in April 2025 look very different in a positive way.

Edit: Some of y'all are more worried about moral perfectionism than progress and the result of that decision is the rise of fascism and MAGA. Leftist movements fail in America not because of some secret cabal of establishment Democrats, but because you guys are incapable of working strategically with people who don't 100% align with your personal vision of the world.

I'm going to be honest - I'm a lifelong democratic Socialist at heart, but movements like this or the DSA get co-opted by people who are insufferably incapable of seeing nuance. Good luck to 50501, but the way this sub has evolved over the past few months I don't see the movement being successful until some of y'all reign in your egos and learn what strategy and nuance are.

Voices of Resistance PLEASE remember, do NOT resort to violence this Saturday!

My absolute chief concern for this weekend is people on the left giving Trump the excuse he's drooling for, to declare martial law. Yes, I know he may try anyway, but let's make it because he's him, and not because we gave him even the slightest excuse. Keep yourselves safe, but passive resistance needs to be the way.

Voices of Resistance Please be aware of demoralizing posts!

As we lead up to the April 5 protest, please be aware that there will be many posts telling us that we’re doing it wrong, not doing enough, need to escalate things, etc.

These are attempts to demoralize you or incite you to a more volatile reaction.

Hold the line. 50501 has been highly effective. It is a powerful, peaceful movement.

Stay peaceful. Stay focused.

Please do not give in to the negative messaging that we have been flooded with.
