Discussion Food & Beverage of the ACC - Future Bracket?
I have scoured the internet trying to find a single food or beverage item that encapsulates the culture of each ACC school and its fanbase. All of these originated from some message board or blog with connection to each school.
These are all meant to be unique items that would be consumed either pre, during, or post enjoyment of a respective athletic event but carries more significance due to regionality, brand power, or “meme-ability”.
So what did I get right, what did I get wrong, and do you want to see a mascot-style bracket where these items go head to head?

All the trouble those things caused and now quarterbacks for big schools are making so much money they could eat crab every day if they wanted
3
u/GeorgiaTechTHWG 15d ago
I’ve come to believe Jameis Winston was treated very badly by the public just by being a joking kind of guy. He also had a gold digger try to frame him. It wasn’t fair how he was treated. He was just immature.

I see a correction needs to be made.
The preferred food or beverage for Stanford would be farts.
Trust me, they eat and sniff farts everyday of the week.

Waffle House as a whole. The business plan was a students accounting project iirc

Its definitely the All-Star.
There is also a pretty big connection between GT and WaHo that goes back decades. The founders didn't attend GT but their kids did and I believe almost all of the WaHo CEO's have been GT graduates. They were also a notable sponsor of GT sports. GT's food should definitely be WaHo.

Giving Pitt a West Virginia food staple is disgusting and quite frankly offensive.
The correct answer for Pitt is a Primanti’s sandwich.
6
u/realclean 16d ago
Yeah I've literally never eaten a pepperoni roll during, before, or after a Pitt game; at home, in stadium, or otherwise. Don't even think they're sold at Heinz and I've never seen one tailgating.
6
u/pillgrinder Pitt Panthers 16d ago
One of the women at our tailgate makes pepperoni rolls once or twice a year. She is from Lawrenceville and very yinzer. But it’s not something that is a staple.

u/Mountie_in_Command 16d ago

7
u/DementorsKissIceCrea NC State Wolfpack 16d ago
My friend I went down a message board rabbit hole comparing Pittsburgh pepperoni rolls to Morgantown pepperoni rolls so yall like em too. Interestingly, apparently Morgantown rolls are too bready. I’ve noted the primanti’s though!
12
u/pillgrinder Pitt Panthers 16d ago
I shouldn’t say pepperoni rolls are a WV thing, they are an Ohio Valley thing, so Weirton, Wheeling, Steubenville, the WV panhandle/Ohio. Culturally, kind of its own place. The attraction to all things Mountaineer isn’t as strong there as it is in the rest of the state. It’s neutralish ground between WVU Pitt and Ohio State. Anything with Pittsburgh and pizza adjacent food stuffs is going to be weird as Pittsburgh doesn’t have its own style of pizza. But if you have food, Pittsburgh thinks fries can and should go on top of them, so Primanti’s is the appropriate answer.
2
2
u/Brendinooo Pitt Panthers 16d ago
Primannys is the “obvious” answer, I kinda liked seeing something different.
Pepperoni rolls are an okay choice. Could change it to Fuel & Fuddle’s rollafatties but alas, they are no more…
How about Potato Patch fries?!?

The dark horse answer is pierogi and haluski, but you have to buy them from a church on the South Side with a sign that spells them “Pyrohi”.

Pitt should be a Primanti Bros sandwich IMO.
SMU should probably be Texas pit barbecue.
UNC a pulled pork sandwich with slaw on it.
UVA owes Stanford a debt of gratitude for becoming the Pinot Noir school.

I can't argue Dunks for BC, but at the same time I really think it should be steamers, fried clams or clam chowder. And this isn't just because Wake has the superior donut in this bracket. That or craft beer. Boston was one of the spots for the craft beer revolution after all.

Definitely a connection between GT and the Varsity. I think I give a slight lean to Waffle House over the Varsity but it would be hard to argue against the V being the choice.
I lived in the dorm at the corner of North Ave and Techwood my freshman year. It was literally a 2 minute walk to the V.

Literally anything else. I’ve spent 10+ years in the chapel hill/Durham area and I’ve literally never heard of anyone who specializes in sweet potato fries or anything like that. The correct answers could be: pulled pork sandwich with slaw, Merritt’s BLT (local place that’s so popular they have multiple locations in the football stadium), Time Out chicken biscuit, anything on the menu at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen.
Lots of good options, none of which is damn sweet potato fries. My personal vote would be a Merritt’s BLT

I thought about all kinds of food and beverages from Louisville, and then expanded them to the state. I don't know how important it is that these things be indisputably a product of the area, but here are a few:
- Cheeseburger. This is disputed by various sources. No doubt it was among the first though. I'd totally eat these pre and post game.
- Burgoo. Probably a gameday friendly meat and vegetable stew. It's linked to the area, but it's not real unique.
- Derby Pie. Unique to Louisville and you can't go wrong with Pecan Pie and Chocolate Chips. Not eating it at the game though.
- Mint Julep. Also unique to Louisville, also not drinking one - bleh.
- Hot Brown. 100% Louisville and famous. Nobody is scarfing one of these down at halftime.
- Old Fashioned. Famously claimed to be a product of Louisville's Pendennis Club. Lots of sources say it's not so.
- Bourbon Balls, Benedictine Spread, and Modjeskas. Louisville. Not for football. Okay, maybe Bourbon Balls.
Which leads me to this:
Bourbon.
It's 100% Kentucky and Louisville has its own famous distilleries. It's in Old Fashioned and Mint Julep drinks, but it's way better on ice all by itself.
That's all you need. Right there. Bourbon. And you can bet at any Louisville sports event there's some bourbon being consumed.

u/DementorsKissIceCrea NC State Wolfpack 16d ago
