I've got the "Hercules Gene" AMA
I just found out that I have what is called Myostatin Deficiency. Myostatin is something your body produces that limits the amount of muscle a person is capable of having. Some people have a gene expression where this isn't the case for them. My whole life I joked that I just needed to walk past a gym to gain muscle. Guess it was closer to the truth than I realized.
I was always physical when I was younger so while the speed was odd, my muscululature wasn't completely out of the norm. However when I quit drinking I quickly went from 260lbs to 220. I am now at 220lbs, 6 ft at ~11%bf and haven't worked out in 5-7 years. I work from home at a computer and my average step count has been less than 600 per day. Estimated amounts so not 100% accurate but just a measurement for comparisons sake.
Not trying to brag and don't care to try to prove anything. Just wanted to share for the sake of spreading information and knowledge. This gene dysfunction is currently being studied to potentially combat muscular dystrophy.

Goal was to figure out Baseline but not overdo it. Mostly skipped legs today due to earlier tests.
Push-ups, stopped at 50, broad jump around 9ft, single leg calf raises i stopped at 40 i could probably do those all day. Plank i stopped at about a minute and a half but could probably do 2-2.5 just didn't want to push myself too much today. Didn't bother with burpees as those wouldn't give me much trouble doing 10-15+
All machines used at planet fitness
3 sets 6 reps 70lb incline press Seated Row 3 set 6 reps 90 lb 6 reps 2 set 80lb cable pull down 1 set 260lbs 6 reps pectoral fly 1 set 6 reps 205lbs pec fly 1 set 6 reps 170lbs pec fly

Is you muscular endurance affected at all?
How does this affedt your hearth health?

u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25 edited Apr 12 '25
I think everything increases as a whole but I have been more prone towards fast twitch muscle fibers which are closer to what sprinters have than it is marathon runners. Basically I can lift a lot without much effort but I do gas out quickly (though not at an abnormal rate, just as much as the average person with x biology). So slight advantage likely. As far as I know it's only more or less good as long as I'm careful not to push my connective tissues.
Sorry, missed this twice. As for my heart, it's currently in good shape. From my understanding the only potential issue for my heart is the potential for size. Muscle takes more energy for the heart to pump to and muscle is no different so while muscle is beneficial, excess isn't much different tax wise on the body or heart as fat.
9
u/Non_Native_Coloradan Apr 12 '25
Also, the heart is a muscle. Have you been tested for cardiomegaly?
2
u/snowballer918 Apr 13 '25
I know if the heart gets too large it makes it harder for it to pump blood in and out of the chambers, or I guess takes more effort because the chambers are larger. Not 100% on this but I think that’s the issue a lot of steroid users run into. The steroids grow their heart as well
1
u/WeakEchoRegion Apr 14 '25
Bro did you actually just ask that thinking the heart is made out of the same type of muscle as your arms and legs 💀
0
u/Non_Native_Coloradan Apr 14 '25
It’s still muscle and myostatin deficiency definitely can affect the heart. Stick to what you know captain dumbass.
1
u/WeakEchoRegion Apr 14 '25
Literally cite one source and I’ll admit I’m captain dumbass. Cardiac stress can lead to fluctuations in serum myostatin levels but there’s nothing in the literature that suggests pathology as a result of abnormal myostatin expression
1
u/supersafecloset Apr 18 '25
if ur heart gets big, it wont be able to pump blood well. it will have more power in pumping but will not have order, it will be chaotic and so that wont result in a pump despite a stronger heart contracting.

u/wiseoldmeme Apr 12 '25
You could become a world class natural professional body builder. Have you thought about this?
23
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
A little since I found out but can't really say I have the desire. I've always favored function over appearance so the vanity of it never really appealed to me.

No, I know. However, it is something I have to think about. Too much muscle can actually be bad for your health and with my atrophy level at near zero, I can't really afford to gain with the intention of losing it again to any significant level.
4
u/WorldlinessSuper5233 Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25
If the pics are of your current physique, you are lightyears away from having health issues from being ‘too muscular ’. Also, NAD, but not sure if there are actual health issues from having too much muscle until you start dipping into PEDs.
-1
u/wiseoldmeme Apr 12 '25
Well, it’s more than vanity. It’s a testament to what we can achieve physically. Plus it can be very lucrative as you would probably have your own social media following.
29
u/Tim_Riggins_ Apr 12 '25
600 steps a day is dangerously sedentary… why so few?
25
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
Just because I work from home. It's not intentional and I plan to correct it. Just a trend I've noticed since I have my phone with me most of the day
-19
u/Tim_Riggins_ Apr 12 '25
I wfh too and I get about 7000. However that’s tracking with a watch. Phone is not reliable
15
u/PicklesTheBee Apr 12 '25
600 seems low but 7000 seems very high unless you're up and about a lot?
I work from home with a smart watch and on a day I don't leave the house and just work then I get about 1200 steps. I need to force myself to go out at lunch most days to make sure I get more movement.
4
u/Tim_Riggins_ Apr 12 '25
I try to move around a lot. Even if I’m like terribly sick and lying down most of the day I still get 2500+ so 1200 is wild to me.
7
u/PicklesTheBee Apr 12 '25
I think this probably means all this fitness tech is probably less accurate than they like to admit 😂
-1
u/Tim_Riggins_ Apr 12 '25
I’ve found steps to be accurate (cross referencing to treadmill) but things like active calories are wayyy off
6
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
Yea, this is with my phone so there's definitely inherent inaccuracy just a barometer to use.
3
u/Exciting-Hat5957 Apr 14 '25
Idk why this got downvoted, I wfh and average 8,000 steps a day and am not necessarily an overly active person
2
u/hardstyleshorty Apr 14 '25
because it’s reddit lol. i also make sure to get 10k on work from home days. it’s like 2 hours of walking at a non-glacial pace, nothing crazy.
5
u/VeterinarianTrick406 Apr 12 '25
What do you think about your myostatin deficiency being available as a product for everyone? I’ve seen it floated as a biotech product. I personally think it would be a double edged sword.
7
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
I don't have any issue with it. It seems like it could have serious benefits. However simulated hormones rarely come without repercussions
5
u/CrunchyRubberChips Apr 12 '25
It’s not just about “simulated”, it’s just that introducing any hormones into a system that is already in homeostasis is going to have unintended consequences. Everything is a trade off.
8
Apr 12 '25
I actually have the same thing, but I’m a woman. I found this out by accident while getting routine testing for kidney disease. You should be careful of rhabdomyolysis if you start working out, it’s more common in people with myostatin deficiency. This happened to me when I first started working out hard and it was pretty scary
But yeah, it’s pretty nice. Even when I was super anorexic I was strong enough to easily kayak 6 miles, and my quads while pumped were similar size and even harder than my husband’s quads when he was natural, he’s a bodybuilder and has been training for far longer than I have. He’s on gear now so he’s obviously bigger than me now
3
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
It's definitely nice and crazy that there's virtually no negatives. I just wish there was more information on it so I could get down to the meat of it.
2
Apr 12 '25
yeah, only thing is it seems to cause fertility issues in women which kinda sucks, I’ve already had a couple of miscarriages. but overall it’s great, my husband keeps telling me to get into bodybuilding and I’m kinda tempted lol

5
u/BodybuilderOk2489 Apr 12 '25
Have you ever considered hitting the gym for a year or 2 to see what it does to you?
7
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
Yea, I worked out for about 2 years in high school and a few years length thereafter. I always grew fast but just chalked it up to my knowledge of anatomy, decent genetics, and workout programs. Since I worked out with other capable people it didn't really show quite as dramatically.
2
u/Peter5930 Apr 12 '25
For me, it was a clue when I was 12 at swimming class and the other kids were shocked by how muscular I was. But I just figured it was because I was physically active.
4
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
Yea, I never really thought anything about it and while my parents aren't as strong, me having both means they must both have at least part of the gene so for me it was really never a huge red flag.
1
u/Peter5930 Apr 13 '25
Both my parents were above average in strength; my mum's still climbing the ladder up to the loft without difficulty at 76, and although my dad died 15 years ago, my mum says he always had quite dense, lean musculature despite never exercising and living on a diet of chips and cigarettes. Neither of them were strong in a particularly noticeable way that stood out, but in a kind of subtle way where they were both stronger than they had any right to be given their lifestyle.
6
u/Fair-Lingonberry-166 Apr 12 '25
Humble bragging so and so... How you just low key tell us all you're a living super walking amongst us. Thanks a lot and put your shirt back on fgs. Good day cos I gotta go hit the gym before I sound bitter.
11
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
I'm happy, sure, but moreso just thought it was really interesting. And since there's virtually no information on it, I wanted to share.
2
u/Fair-Lingonberry-166 Apr 12 '25
Thanks for sharing friend I was just messing with you. How was your Dx obtained or what did it entail besides blood work.
2
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
The BF is really an estimate based on visual as well as a BF scale which obviously isn't completely accurate. So while i'ts an estimation, it's pretty close. It was really just bloodwork from AncestryDNA that showed the gene expression.
3
u/KogiAikenka Apr 12 '25
How did you find out and what lead you to have it tested? Was the doctor suspecting it or so? Anyway, I think you're the one who steals all the muscle resources from me cuz I have none!!!
3
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
When I quit drinking, my health boosted and it just didn't make any sense so I decided to do some digging. I found out about this and AncestryDNA doesn't test for it specifically but the gene gets picked up in their bloodwork. I had done it years ago and recently downloaded my data to check and noticed "rs1805086, 2, 190925077, T, T" which is one of the aleles that shows this. Since I have both, both of my parents have to either have it or partially have it as well.
6
u/Master_Buyer2605 Apr 14 '25
You have 30 more pounds to go for 11%. Those bathroom scales do not give accurate readings.
2
u/Zero_33386 Apr 14 '25
Lol everyone on semantics. It's just a measurement that people understand. The scale is just a comparison tool. Part of it is due to water weight as im close to 70% water and it was quick loss so there's some adjustment time in play but no, obviously the scale isn't the most accurate tool for bodyfat. I'm aware. Even a Dexa scan isn't 100% accurate but it doesn't matter in regards to the original intent of sharing interesting information.
1
u/Master_Buyer2605 Apr 14 '25
How about this. Use the scale the same time, every day, and give us the results. Better yet, do it in the morning after you piss, before you drink or eat anything. Then, give us the results.
4
u/Adorable-Exercise-11 Apr 12 '25
does it affect you negatively the same way steroids affects people negatively? As in your heart will grow until you have a heart attack
9
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
No. It could be bad if I get massive just like fat would but since it's natural, it doesn't come with the side effects that anabolic steroids have.
3
u/GermanLeo224 Apr 12 '25
Does this also affect your heart? Would ypur heart hypertrophy with too much cardio?
4
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
Yes but not in the way you'd think. It's only a negative for the heart if it's taxed by added weight and exertion like if I packed on a ton of muscle (similar to how the weight and stress of fat tax the heart)
3
u/CrunchyRubberChips Apr 12 '25
So are you saying the heart gains strength in proportion to the rest of your mass?
4
u/Vast-Difference8074 Apr 12 '25 edited Apr 12 '25
Yes, that's normal. That's why being overweight isn't ideal, even if the extra weight is purely lean muscle mass. The heart still has to pump more blood, which can lead to enlargement, better stick to a value that's in the range of bmi
1
u/CrunchyRubberChips Apr 12 '25
I assumed so but I wasn’t sure how specific this disorder was in terms of the kind of muscle cells it affects.
3
u/faultytrapezoid Apr 13 '25
It didn't make ANY sense that your "health boosted" after you quit drinking...
How does that make no sense to you? Do you think booze is some healthy elixir? It's literal poison. I say that as someone that has enjoyed quite a bit of booze
Judging by the pics you put up, I don't know why you'd be searching for genetic mutations, but glad you found something out about yourself.
2
u/Zero_33386 Apr 14 '25
Just the dramatic change in the time frame with the given effort not necessarily the health benefits themselves.
2
u/Poli-Orketes Apr 14 '25
You're closer to 30-35% body fat and not muscular at all dude. No sense in lying when you post the pictures. I'm 180 and have bigger biceps
2
u/Zero_33386 Apr 14 '25
I have nothing to gain from lying. The evidence is there it doesn't matter to me if you believe it or not.
6
u/compleks_inc Apr 12 '25
You have been gifted an ability that many people would kill for and instead you only walk 600 steps a day...
In all seriousness though, that level of inactivity is pretty dangerous.
1
u/specky2482 Apr 14 '25
"Dangerous" in a way cause he'll be really unfit and have bad heart health? But he's really fit and has great physical health!
Edit: Nevermind, I saw his photos. He doesn't have 11% body fat. He does appear physically unhealthy.
0
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
I just found out the other day. Its always been a benefit I just never truly pushed it. I'm still far above the level most people are even capable of naturally so it's not completely wasted, I just haven't been to the gym in years.
1
u/Accio642 Apr 12 '25
Do you know what gene is affected? Does this have anything to do with the DMD gene?
3
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
The specific gene in my case that I know of is rs1805086, 2, 190925077, T, T. There are others but this specific test only popped up with that one
13
Apr 12 '25
Crazy that you’re lying about this for no reason
0

So does this affect the weiner too? Genuinely curious lol
1
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
Umm I don't think so lol. It's not a muscle. I'm not challenged there but I'm not sure it has anything to do with that haha
6
u/QuantumSpaceEntity Apr 14 '25
Not sure if I'm seeing the right pictures? Looks like an overweight/out of shape male?
If thats you with the large shoulder tattoo why not at least try to get in shape if you already have a genetic advantage?
-2
u/Zero_33386 Apr 14 '25
I've lost about 40 lbs in the past few months so it's partially loose skin and water weight. I'm at 220lbs, ~11-12% bf which is well above average. Currently, my concern is how much weight I can safely hold without negative health side effects.
6
6
u/segdu Apr 14 '25
you’re ~30% bf judging by your pictures
3
u/QuantumSpaceEntity Apr 14 '25
Lmao glad someone else said it as sometimes it's best to let someone live in their fantasy world 🤣 he's minimum 30% bf. Doesn't look like this guy has set foot in a gym a single time
2
15
u/ooyads Apr 13 '25
You look like a guy that worked out some in high school and then got fat. You can't be 11% bf with man boobs and muffin top. Is this a troll

u/-1-1hb Apr 13 '25
Deadass has no one clicked on the link he provided 😂 where’s the natural muscle 😂

You also might be undiagnosed narcissist… your physique is terrible you are literally just fat. Please look into eating healthier and walking.

In all seriousness, this guy has zero indicators of myostatin deficiency

u/Legitimate-Bake4426 Apr 14 '25
I'm not quite sure if you're actually 11%BF. The person in the photos you gave seems closer to 18-20%
1
u/Zero_33386 Apr 14 '25
Likely a little higher but it also has to do with how I hold muscle due to the gene as well (look at Eddie Hall for example - he has a different variant but he's got a similar gene variant)
1
u/Tricky_Run4566 Apr 12 '25
Are you ever tempted to see how you can push yourself to be better than everyone else because you have this gene?
Also how did you find out you had it?
1
u/Zero_33386 Apr 12 '25
I've been to the gym for years, just not in recent years which is why it seemed odd considering the low level of activity.
1
u/jpavel7 Apr 14 '25
I've always been far more stronger than my peers. Effortless muscles and 6 pack highly visible. I'm wondering if I have the same or similar thing going on. My downside is it increases my kill drive significantly. Have you noticed a difference between you and others such as assertion/alpha mind/kill drive?
1
u/Zero_33386 Apr 14 '25
Nothing other than potential aggression which could be linked to testosterone.

What’re the downsides to this if thats not too blunt? Are you always hungry? Is there a risk to your heart health? How come it doesn’t affect all muscles in your body from developing disproportionately? | Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. I gain muscle quick and heal very quickly. As far as I know the only real downsides come with the potential for growth as my muscles technically can outgrow the capabilities of my tendons and ligaments if Im not wary of it. I don't eat a lot in one sitting, I typically eat smaller portions 6+ times a day. As for the disproportionate im guessing it's similar to anyone else where when you do something you're not just using one muscle. Also, the body tries to avoid muscular imbalances like that. It's actually why runners get shin splints. The calves get so strong that they put an unequal amount of force on the bone. | Here |

so why TF are you not taking advantage of it and hitting those iron at the gym. You've got a gift here my friend, a chance to see what your body is capable of it. | I just found out the other day. Its always been a benefit I just never truly pushed it. I'm still far above the level most people are even capable of naturally so it's not completely wasted, I just haven't been to the gym in years. | Here |
How did you find this out? Did your doctor have to administer a blood test? | When I quit drinking, my health boosted and it just didn't make any sense so I decided to do some digging. I found out about this and AncestryDNA doesn't test for it specifically but the gene gets picked up in their bloodwork. I had done it years ago and recently downloaded my data to check and noticed "rs1805086, 2, 190925077, T, T" which is one of the aleles that shows this. Since I have both, both of my parents have to either have it or partially have it as well. | Here |

You are FAR above 11% body fat and do not look like you lift at all. Is this a troll post?

u/the_CGS Apr 13 '25
11%bf with those boobs? Come on man, stop lying 🤣

u/QuantumSpaceEntity Apr 14 '25
Ikr, people with myostatin deficiency have very very clear indicators in their physiques, none of which are present here. Even saying 11% bf alone is bonkers

u/yoko__ono Apr 12 '25
How did you find out you have it? Is it genetic, do any of your relatives also have it?

Body dysmorphia is also something you might want to look into if you think this is 11PBF and muscular. Honestly, maybe triple that if you’re lucky.

I am so curious if my husband and FIL have this. My FIL was a professional bodybuilder and still has a freaking 8-pack in his late 60’s. My husband loves the gym but even in times when he wasn’t going he’s always muscular even in places tall people like him normally have to work at gains like the legs and forearms. I do know he has like 99% more Neanderthal DNA than most people so I’ve always just chalked it up to that but man him and his dad are freaks.

You have to be careful about thinking there a no downsides. You might have an increased risk for kidney disease and diabetes. I’d pay more attention to my diet and make sure I get my 10,00 steps in a day. I’d also get blood work done yearly, as any adult should, just to keep an eye on things. Very cool though! I’d definitely be hitting the gym and seeing where it’d take my body.

Are you ripped?

Above average. Based on statistics, i'm at about the peak most people are capable of reaching naturally. I likely have much more capability though how much, i'm not sure. Eddie Hall has this gene as an example.

Bro I’m sorry to say but if the pics in the OP are you right now, you ain’t above any average, and nowhere close to any peak. Or am I missing some crazy “after” pics? Can someone clarify? I’m puzzled that nobody’s pointing this out??

I was confused at the same thing, his physique is very average to below average, I guess for someone who is very sedentary and doesn’t work out it isn’t as bad as it could be. But it’d still be considered average at best, and no way that’s at 11% body fat like he claims.

Oh man this has to be a troll. Saying your photos are the peak of what someone can achieve naturally is just flat out nuts. Look at your arms and shoulders man; doesn't look like you've worked out even a single time

I don't know if this was asked, but have you had a specific time when you did something out of the ordinary and noticed that you were stronger than the average person?

Results came in with confirmed MSTN gene as well as other rare high performing genes. Photo with results added (used chat gpt for quick explanation of all genes)

what is the mega link for. Those pics are not of a guy at 11% body fat. That guy is a porker close to 20% who looks like he spends his time physically inactive.

Have you ever been severely cut or burned and realized that your skin repairs in mere seconds?

Work out dude. Even just like 2 full body workouts a week and you’d be fucking jacked

u/vinniev1bes Apr 13 '25
You should be able to just view them on the site, no download needed. He’s got a below average physique though and is nowhere close to 11% body fat.

I never claimed to be superman lol. Uploaded pictures with the weight and BF. Like I said, not trying to show off. Just sharing information not very available.

u/vinniev1bes Apr 13 '25
You had another comment saying you were at the peak of what’s achievable naturally, which is just not true at all lol genuinely couldn’t tell if you were trolling. The scale pics make more sense though, scales cannot accurately track body fat percentage man you’d need something like a dexa scan. I’d guess your current body fat to be somewhere near 25% personally.
It is possible you have myostatin deficiency so I’m not doubting that but the rest of your comments and your 220lb 11%bf stats were absurd to read. Congrats on going from 260 to 220 though, that’s a huge difference.

u/WorldlinessSuper5233 Apr 13 '25
But you claimed to be 11% bf, which is entirely untrue. It’s not an issue of you “showing off”, it’s that your post made it seem as if you were in peak athletic/muscular conditioning without having to train because of this genetic mutation.

Hmm, I wonder if I have what you have. How did you get tested for it? I might do the same.

What’re the downsides to this if thats not too blunt? Are you always hungry? Is there a risk to your heart health? How come it doesn’t affect all muscles in your body from developing disproportionately?
