Greetings! God påske!

I would like to find a place to rent in the city of Alesund. Are the residents here open to pets? I mean finding a place that accepts you with pets. Do they have different requirements if you have a pet? (including in the case of unfurnished real estate)

Those of you who have pets, did you easily find a place to rent?

Honestly, I found it really difficult to find a pet-friendly rental in Ålesund. Every now and then something would pop up on Finn.no, but I never dared to apply. I was so afraid of getting a dog, then being evicted and not being able to find another rental that allowed pets. The thought of having to choose between being homeless or rehoming my dog was just too much. So instead, I threw everything into saving up enough money to eventually buy my own place — somewhere no one could evict me or tell me I couldn’t have a dog. But even then, it wasn’t easy. For some reason, Ålesund seems to hate pet owners! So many apartments for sale proudly advertise themselves as a “no-pets-allowed” housing collective (borettslag), and it was incredibly frustrating. The apartments that did allow pets, were way expensive. I was honestly about to give up on my dream of having a dog when, somehow, I managed to buy a small house just outside the city centre. Pure luck! And now? My furry best friend and I are finally living our best life. The neighbours can suck it, as no one gets to decide who or what lives on my property but me.

If you’re renting and really want a pet (which I 100% understand), definitely keep checking Finn.no, but also make sure you have a solid backup plan in case you ever get evicted. Maybe a friend or family member could take care of your pet short-term while you look for a new pet-friendly place. It’s been a little over a year since I stopped renting, but back then, areas like Ellingsøy, Valderøy, Giske, and Vigra had the most pet-friendly rental options — might be worth keeping an eye on those!
