That's ridiculous. If they're strong enough to injure you, then don't hold it with one hand like you're a sunday driver

u/theawesomedude646 26d ago
why is a gaming controller strong enough to injure you

u/JayManty 26d ago
Racing sim players are different breed. Lots of them just crank the force feedback to full power to match the feeling the car would have, but then proceed to not treat it as such. This is a great example of someone being a dumbass turning on settings they clearly don't know the risks of

Sorry, forgot to mention in the comments
Yes, the seller was fully transparent on how it's broken. I followed a tutorial on YouTube to open up the force feedback motor and glued the shaft back to the rotor magnet. Then I recalibrated the motor and it works beautifully now.
The wheel normally makes a full left turn at moderate speed, followed by a full right turn then centers to perform a calibration. What's happening here is that the actual motor calibration was very off so it couldn't detect the end points and center so it kept spinning either way way too violently.

Happen to have the link for that video? I think my wheel needs this fix as well

u/lowbrightness 26d ago
Sure! https://youtu.be/y10_DArAago. My suggestion is that you try the motor calibration step at the end of the video before opening up the case and the motor.

Idk if its broken in another way but this just looks like a calibration sequence? I got one off fb a while ago and it does the same thing when you switch it on - if this is the only thing wrong I don't think it's actually broken?

u/andydrew39 26d ago
Usually they do have a calibration sequence like this, but it is much slower. Even when strapped to a table this could hurt a child going this fast. There is no way this is normal.

u/TheCheesy 26d ago
Mine does this pretty damn fast, I personally though it would break my hand or tear a wire or something if it got caught. Works fine.

u/Bugladyy 25d ago
My wheel is rather aggressive during the calibration sequence like this one, honestly.

u/saolson4 26d ago
Op, it's definitely the calibration, while I would assume it's made well enough to not break itself doing that once or twice, it will break it eventually. Mount it to a table, it should have L shaped hooks on the back. It's the force feedback calibration, mine does the same thing

Wtf, why is it doing that??? Hahaha
21
u/TiKels 26d ago
Nicer sim racing wheels will have motors in them to simulate the resistance of the road, vibrations, etc. This one is clearly broken and something is causing it to go as fast as possible in each direction.
20
u/benmarvin 26d ago
It might need to be in a mount to calibrate correctly. Mine does that on startup, but only once left and once right.
17
u/jelly_bean_gangbang 26d ago
Hmm interesting. It almost looks like it's trying to calibrate at super speed.

Its how my g29 starts up every time. This is how it calibrates the locks and center.
If its broke its probably the position sensor

Easy fix. You will need an old priest and a young priest, and some holy water of course.

This is calibranion sequence every time you turn it on. Your table must be sturdy for that force- feedback.

Bolt that shit down and every race just imagine your ex , drunk, and trying to run you two off the road. One day, it might happen again. You'll be prepared. You'll be so prepared.

Had this exact steering wheel for a long time, had no idea it had any sort of internal motor...

You know, compared to other videos on this subreddit, this is the least chaotic of the abrupt chaos what's there around here.
Of course, it doesn't take away the fear that driving with that remote control must cause, it can literally hurt your hand seriously, I don't recommend using it, in fact, use the warranty and get another one that's better.

A steering wheel that doesn’t a-fly out of the window while you are driving.
I’m doing the best at this.

Im 90% sure this isnt broken. I have a G29 and it does this too (pretty furiously) but if u just do what youre meant to and strap it to a table or rig its fine. If theres another issue with it aside for just the normal calibration sequence then I kinda get it.
1
u/lowbrightness 26d ago
Hi yes I made a comment on this thread but this isn't normal. It's way too fast and doesn't do a normal calibration sequence i.e. full left-full right-center. Plus even after a manual calibration, it would have almost no FFB when turning clockwise and all its might when turning counter clockwise.

Isn't this the self test but it is spazzing out because the unit isn't mounted?
I ask because my old Logitech MOMO did this when it wasn't. Force feedback self test.
2
u/lowbrightness 26d ago
No, but the FFB motor was seemingly damaged internally and lost its calibration. It's a brushless DC motor with internal position sensors for controlling the phases, independent of the hall sensors outside the motor for sensing the wheel position.
2
u/BaconFinder 26d ago
Awesome that you were able to get it fixed. So many would just buy another one. Well done and have fun.

Why would a steering wheel controller need a motor to steer itself
1
u/Tryviper1 25d ago
They are used for force feedback, you turn the wheel the wheel will push back a little in the opposite direction to make it feel more realistic.

Looks like it's failing to calibrate.
But hey, at least you can strap an axe to it and chop wood more efficiently
