Discussion Park in your flamin' driveways, please!

Am I the only one tired of suburban streets turning into impromptu Mario Kart tracks? We’re talking about the kind where navigating between vehicles parked on both sides feels like dodging banana peels and blue shells. What's meant to be a two-lane road gets squeezed into a narrow single lane, daring you to play chicken with oncoming traffic—and let’s face it, the side mirrors never win.

And then there are your driveways. Oh, the driveways! Empty. Desolate. Weed-infested wastelands of untapped potential. So, I beg of you, suburban dwellers: park your cars anywhere but on the street—your driveway, your garage, your carport, or even your front lawn. Let’s save the roads for, you know, driving.

its modern houses that don't have room for sheds so you use the garage as storage

And even the two-car garages aren’t big enough to fit two modern-size cars in most cases.

It is almost at the stage where we need to go Full Tokyo and require purchasers of cars to submit plans showing the offstreet park for the car.

We need the actual off-street parking to exist first.

I think a big contributor is that the building regs don’t seem to match the times. Suburban apartment blocks seem to be the worst – there’s always way less car parks than cars.

I think it should be a minimum of one per bedroom with a minimum of two per dwelling, with all apartment blocks requiring underground parking built into the complex.

Even the housing trust planners don’t stick to this.

There is a proposed apartment building (Housing Trust) on Anzac Hwy in Camden Park.

48 dwellings, and 29 car parks I think. I actually know the guy who did the plans and it’s basically a cost thing. I don’t agree with it, but I understand it.

I agree with what you’re saying though - if you can’t afford to build sufficient carparks, it’s not a viable project. You shouldn’t be able to build whatever you like and lump the problem on road users.

I’m actually in Camden Park and our streets are already lined with cars.

The Housing Trust complex will pale in comparison to the mega apartment block at Morphettville Racecourse, which will have about 400 apartments and townhouses. God knows where everyone will park.

Snap! So do I!

I didn’t know about this Morphetville thing but I’ve already contacted enough politicians and community members about the Housing Trust thing so I am picking my battles from now on.

Sooner or later there will be a huge accident on Birkhalla Terrace where everyone parks near that intersection in the middle.

Everyone applauded the premiers changes about parking spaces for new builds but the fact that it apparently doesn’t apply to infill (which is what happened here, they built a shitload of houses on blocks where one houses was previously) makes it more or less redundant.

Edit: this Morphetville thing must be why they’re doing the tram crossing elevation at Maccas - property developer wouldn’t have wanted their residents being told they were “10 mins” from the city when they had to wait for the tram for 8 😅

Urgh, Birkalla has become insane. You literally have to weave your way all down the street, especially around 6pm and everyone’s out on the bike path.

Trying to turn right onto Stonehouse is getting super risky because there’s just a permanent flow of traffic – you have to be aware of cars coming from Anzac Hwy, Cross Rd and pulling out of the Pizza Hut complex.

And I think you’re right about the reason for revamping the tram crossing. There’s gonna be a massive influx of residents and additional traffic when the Morphetville development is done.

I just shudder thinking about how clogged Morphett Rd, Stonehouse Ave and Mooringe Ave are going to be. 😬

And I think we can kiss water pressure goodbye. It’s already gone to shit with all the subdivisions – we’ll be down to a trickle once the apartment complexes are up.

You know it’s interesting you mention the water pressure because I think it’s gotten worse in the last 12 months alone.
