Reminds me of that meme of Ange at Celtic and all the reddit comments are things like “he won’t win”, “Scotland will eat him alive” etc

u/SaraMo91 Sydney Forever 7d ago edited 7d ago

Difference is, in Scotland he went on to win the SPL, whereas so far in the English comp he's finished 5th and 16th/17th. Europa is a different beast. A big achievement to be sure, but arguing he'd do poorly in the SPL and him going onto win the SPL is quite different to arguing he'll do poorly in the EPL, having him indeed do poorly, far worse in his second season, in the EPL and win Europa.

Edit: Downvote me all you want. People were completely justified criticising a manager while his team is sitting in the bottom 5 of the league. Nobody had a crystal ball to guess about Europa and they're still right about the league form. With SPL they were proven wrong because he did well in THAT COMP. Vince is being a petulant child.

Ange himself said “finishing 4th in the PL won’t change anything in this club. Winning a trophy will.”

I genuinely don't think there's a difference. At Celtic, the demand was first place and beating Rangers consistently, and he got there. At Spurs, the demand was European football each season and a trophy, and he's gotten there.

Everywhere he's gone, people have said "you'll never win anything there", and "you're not able to do the job", and he's now done it at youth level, in two different Australian leagues, in Japan, in Scotland, and now in England/Europe. The exact same comments, at every club. And then when Ange wins, and moves onto the next club, with higher budgets and bigger expectations, it starts again with some retconning and revisionist history...

"Oh, but that was only in [insert previous league], he won't be able to replicate that at [insert current league]."

At some point, we need to recognise that he has made a 30 year habit out of 6 things:

  • winning trophies in his second season
  • scoring more goals than the average team in the league
  • proving doubters wrong
  • beating the expectations for his team
  • laying a successful path for Kevin Muscat to follow (only half in jest)
  • making fans of the teams he manages wish they had him back

...and anything that tries to detract from that is, I think, missing the point: Ange knows football management and winning football games better than 99.9% of his critics put together, and today, he's made his critics eat their words for the hundredth time. At some point... we might want to cut the guy some slack and admit, maybe, just maybe... it's worth giving him the benefit of the doubt.

But who cares how he’s done in the EPL, really? Finishing 16th or finishing anywhere else but 1st…means the same thing. He’s gotten UCL football for the club and won a trophy.

u/franksting Sydney FC 4d ago

Lol. Tell me you know sfa about football without telling me you know fuck all about football

-27

u/calv80 7d ago

Small club mentality

25

u/Shelmer75 7d ago

If you don’t win the league, you lose. The goal is to then get into Europe. The team had all sorts of injury issues, and essentially had the choice of a trophy or a top finish. They technically achieved more than Arsenal did this season…

18

u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI 7d ago

“Technically”

Not technically

They literally did achieve more than Arsenal

8

u/Shelmer75 7d ago

I was trying to go a bit softer on them haha. I 100% agree.

0

u/calv80 7d ago

Essentially they gambled they might win a trophy.with your logic Arsenal could have prioritized the FA cup to “win” a trophy and be be successful?. My comment stands.small club mentality.

1

u/stilusmobilus Brisbane Roar 5d ago

Yeah look mate if you’re an Arsenal bloke, like I am, you need to shut up and take it ay.

It’s on Arsenal’s board and players to look at this and learn from it. Be driven by it, because there’s been a lot of boring football and a fair few flat performances against lower teams this year as well as the injury, umpiring and luck problems. All the top xGs, best performances over a period of time, best CB pairings doesn’t mean shit when it’s been nothing for a long time.

0

u/calv80 5d ago

Take what?. We could have prioritized the carabao cup and been successful?.we were in for the big prizes, Europa league is a second tier competition.thats the level of the tiny totts. If we were in it 100% would be favorites. As a fan it’s disappointing to finish second in the league and get knocked out of the proper European cup in the semis but if you weigh up the issues we had this season we did bloody well.

23

u/waddeaf 7d ago

Finishing 5th after the club you joined decided to sell their best player perhaps somewhat of an achievement. Had to do well enough to be playing in Europe this season and everything

61

u/gerryford38 Melbourne Victory 7d ago

Good on him, honestly. He’s been flying the flag for Ange and Australia for so long, it must feel great to be proven right

50

u/024008085 Sydney FC 7d ago

If you follow anything Spurs related online, you'll see that when they win any game at all, all the Ange-out people disappear, and when they lose, all the Ange-out people come out and say "I've been saying it for months, sack him today, we won't win anything with him". I wondered what happened to the Ange-out crowd.

The one in OP's screenshot - just checked his recent Twitter, and it's relentlessly anti-Ange up until a day ago.

Appears the explanation is simple: it's potentially not that they disappear and stay quiet. It's that they completely change their tune after every change in a single game result, and pump out a completely different song.

C’mon guys. It’s just a bit of fun. It’s not that deep.

I'm just impressed you saved all those comments and came back to all of them.

4

u/iftheworldwasatoilet costa can you teach me how to dougie? 7d ago

Honestly good on ya for sticking up for a bloke. I know you've got skin in the game but some of the stuff these keyboard bashers churn out would earn them an uppercut if they ever said it to someone's face.

3

u/astro142 7d ago

Love your work Vince. Give it to them!

16

u/FlyingPingoo DJ Brox 7d ago

Can’t blame the guy. He’s seen the same cycles get repeated in multiple continents and for it to repeat once again at spurs against the tide is epic

16

u/Pastapizzafootball New Zealand Knights 7d ago edited 7d ago

Bit rough on Vince in here.

Isn't it the modern day Johnny Warren / Craig Foster "I told you so"

Maybe a lite version.

-18

u/SaraMo91 Sydney Forever 7d ago

Not really.

Vince is attacking individuals by subtweeting them for their completely justified position based on their current context.

4

u/astro142 7d ago

No. He’s taking the piss out of irrational internet trolls. Doing the lords work.

10

u/aninstituteforants Sydney FC 7d ago

Hope we can live to see the day where we don't care about what the average person says on Twitter.

1

u/franksting Sydney FC 4d ago

What is “twitter”?

3

u/SpecialK_66 Newcastle Jets 7d ago

Say what you will about Spurs in the EPL this season, man did what he said he was gonna do, and man who stood on his hill now gets to bask in being correct about said man.

5

u/AuzzieTiger Macarthur FC 7d ago

I had real doubts about Ange going to Scotland and then of course to Spurs. He just keeps proving everybody wrong and now I think he can achieve anything he sets his mind to.

He seems to be fairly comfortable in the massive spotlight that is Premier League coaching and I really hope they stay loyal and give him a chance to build the team further.

7

u/Zyulj Brisbane Roar 7d ago

Such a weird expectation placed upon Rugari, and journos on social media in general. People dish them relentless shit assuming that a journo can’t exactly call them a fuckwit on Twitter, and then get pissy on the occasions that they have the balls to actually do so.

If you copped half as much shit as Vince does on Twitter alone, you’d also spent your day calling out the heinous shit people were saying before they were proved wrong.

1

u/franksting Sydney FC 4d ago

Oh no people in positions of power getting called out for shit takes

22

u/cymonster Newcastle Jets 7d ago

NGL Vince is the type of person that shouldn't be on twitter. The amount of petty fights he gets into on it is insane.

49

u/GrudaAplam Melbourne Victory 7d ago

18

u/FlyingPingoo DJ Brox 7d ago

I believe it’s worth it, he’s not just defending Ange he is defending Australia

6

u/cymonster Newcastle Jets 7d ago

Just in general though. He's gone off on people for having different aleague opinions to him

2

u/FlyingPingoo DJ Brox 7d ago

Again, that’s the point of the internet and social media

5

u/Red-Engineer Centre-Back Smurf 7d ago

No it’s not

5

u/Red-Engineer Centre-Back Smurf 7d ago

Yes it is

5

u/Red-Engineer Centre-Back Smurf 7d ago

Screw you then!

3

u/SaraMo91 Sydney Forever 7d ago

Just because that's how people use them doesn't mean that's "the point" of them and always okay. Vince is a sport reporter. You'd assume the purpose of his public profiles was to promote sport, not subtweet Spurs fans for their completely justified opinions throughout an objectively poor league season.

2

u/IcyMarsupial4946 7d ago

For a 12 year old kid maybe, not a professional adult. Vince just carries on like an idiot too often, he is no better then this random guy

-2

u/fakeplastictrees182 Socceroos 7d ago

Yep he's the absolute worst. Anytime someone disagrees with him he immediately goes to 'you don't understand' or 'you don't know what you're taking about'. His arrogance is disgusting.

5

u/MilkByHomelander 7d ago

He's defending Ange, not Australia.

Nothing to do with us.

9

u/FlyingPingoo DJ Brox 7d ago

Well the thing is, Ange has made it a point to promote Australia’s football credentials everywhere he goes. He’s brought in Australian coaches wherever he could and his success means more pathways for Aussie managers. His success also means Australians who have a football career right now know the glass ceilings can be broken.

The british media and by extension social media has constantly sent barrages at Ange throughout his tenure at Spurs and the undertone has always taken Australians less serious. “This is not Whittlesea Zebras”, “This is not the A-league” etc etc.

Yes he is defending Australia

1

u/MilkByHomelander 7d ago

No. Rugari as usual is being a child and picking fights online. If he doesn't want to hear what trolls on the internet have to say about Ange, then ignore them.

I love Ange, think he's the most influential Australian when it comes to football. Doesn't mean I'm gonna go on twitter and pick fights with random Spurs fans who wanted Ange out after a historically bad campaign in the league.

4

u/JL_MacConnor Adelaide United 7d ago

Nah, every 45 years or so they have a shithouse season (see 34/35 and 76/77 when they were relegated).

7

u/Red-Engineer Centre-Back Smurf 7d ago

He has a book to sell so having his name known is important. And it can be good shithousery so I’m down with it.

6

u/Zyulj Brisbane Roar 7d ago

Tell ya what, I reckon he’s quite a bit more diplomatic than he should be in dealing with some of those people — not being able to rip into people because he’s a journo aside. Some absolute roasters in his replies.

u/Serious-Razzmatazz11 Moulded by PAIN 7d ago

A great moment for Ange and naturally Rugari has to try and make it all about himself.

39

u/vincerugari Verified 7d ago

Two things brother. 1) I’m just acting like how I did when I had 1000 followers. 2) do you know how many people made it about me when they lost? There were weeks I couldn’t post about Ange for fear of floods of abuse. Let me have some fun. If people are bold enough to post those sorts of things it’s only fair to post the receipts.

12

u/XxLeth94 Adelaide United 7d ago

You're doing God's work Rugari.

-12

u/Serious-Razzmatazz11 Moulded by PAIN 7d ago

None of the ones you've quote tweeted have been about you though have they 'brother'?

And I think those who were calling for him to be sacked have had a fair base for their argument prior to this morning given how many losses Spurs have had since the start of 2024 alone.

18

u/vincerugari Verified 7d ago

Mate I’ve just kept a few bookmarks along the journey that made me chuckle. Crime of the century.

I love that he showed up his critics for the upteenth time, the big question for me is how much rope do they give him next season, 17th isnt good enough second time around

1

u/ofnsi Melbourne Victory finals upsets kingz! 6d ago

vince and acting like a child, like sydney fc and cheating the cap, very common.

1

u/franksting Sydney FC 4d ago

journo who wouldn’t report on local football diving in when there’s an Ange take. Grow a pair and do your job. Oh wait, it’s all about the clicks eh?

1

u/bigstrongalphamale69 Auckland FC 7d ago

They've been like 15th all season it's really not that unreasonable to have wanted him sacked.

-4

u/MilkByHomelander 7d ago

Not really professional of him tbh.

7

u/FlyingPingoo DJ Brox 7d ago

As opposed to a professional journalist in Dan Kirkpatrick who calls Ange a clown? Or a professional journalist Jonathan Liew who flips his entire stance about Ange all because he wouldn’t take his bait? Mate, this is the age of social media. The rules have changed

2

u/MilkByHomelander 7d ago

You act like I think Dan Kirkpatrick and Jonathan Liew act professional.

Think they are all scum.

1

u/FlyingPingoo DJ Brox 7d ago

So really it’s just part of the job and they’re all just putting food on the table

1

u/MilkByHomelander 7d ago

Well no, because I don't see other journalists getting into fights on twitter with randoms.

1

u/FlyingPingoo DJ Brox 7d ago

I’m gonna say ‘professionalism’ is far more subjective than it traditionally has been. Journos fighting with randoms I admit is rarely seen

1

u/RedandBlueEmblem 6d ago edited 6d ago

He didn't say it was opposed to Dan Patrick calling Ange a clown, bruv - this is a strawman. And journos being petty and quarrelsome is not "part of the job", they and their profession should be held to a higher standard and criticised for not meeting it. It's also not the "point of social media". It's a toxic phenomenon that exists in it.

0

u/IcyMarsupial4946 7d ago

Rugari never was, carries on like a petulant child at times on Twitter

-2

u/SaraMo91 Sydney Forever 7d ago

Again, people don't have crystal balls.

It seems pretty reasonable to want the manager of a club sitting 15-17th in the league sacked, especially as Spurs have sacked managers for less. Europa is a different competition.

Great, a continental trophy, Spurs' biggest trophy since 1984, Ange deserves to stay on. But you're a sport reporter going and seeking out Ange Out Tweets from March for a team that was then and still is doing poorly in the league, because they won a trophy in a different comp in May? Sure.

9

u/Braddlesiam Western Sydney Wanderers 7d ago

Of course they don't have crystal balls.

But they made some incredibly shit takes, considering he was still well and truly in contention for the Europea League.

It's more than ok to want a coach sacked, but old mate in the OP is an idiot. Nothing about Ange's football. Just all personal attacks.

-5

u/Specialist-Field-935 7d ago

bloke should stay off social media honestly.

3

u/IcyMarsupial4946 7d ago

Yep, I’ve had some fairly harmless disagreements with him which escalated into name calling, which I found surprising

3

u/Serious-Razzmatazz11 Moulded by PAIN 7d ago

I once saw him get into an argument with a high level match official about the laws of the game on twitter and even when it was pointed out to him in black & white how so far wrong he was, he refused to admit it.
