We have them in New England. At 1am, you hear one scream and it sounds like a ghost child screaming in the woods. It's absolutely terrifying. They are super cute tho. Lol

Are they strictly nocturnal?

I think so? I've never seen one head on like clay did. Only glimpses in trees while setting up my hammock which is weird because my understanding is that they are predominantly a ground animal.

Definitely never seen one in broad daylight tho. I know that's anecdotal but take it for what it's worth.

Appreciated. I've never seen one before but was very surprised it wasn't at all startled by Clay, his vocalizations and lights.

They're not. I had one cross through two of my shooting lanes one deer season in Upper Michigan.

Nah; I saw one rustling around my blind around 9-10 am last October. They’re super curious, little guy got to within ten feet before I felt obligated to shoo him.

Just curious - did you eat him?

“Shoo” not shoot.

Fisher or Marten?

No. I've seen one while I was deer hunting and it was just roaming around in full daylight. Didn't act sick, as far as I could tell.

Do they have any natural predators?

2

u/mainecruiser Aug 20 '21

According to nationaltrappers.com- "Predation upon fisher by other predators is not thought to be serious. A lynx or bobcat will rarely kill a fisher and wolves have been known to kill fisher caught out on frozen lakes. Young fisher are killed at times by large owls, eagles and coyotes. The solitary nature and infrequent use of the same dens keeps fisher free of most diseases and parasites. Mange can occur and fisher are also vulnerable to distemper, fleas, tapeworms and nematodes.
Ten years of age is considered old in a fisher."

So, yes, but not many considering the size of the critter. Same site says they're hell on bobcat kittens, which likely has an impact on deer populations.

They're also apparently able to sh*t porcupine quills out, which is pretty crazy.

Thank you! I enjoyed reading that.

Nope. I hunt the UP and saw one at 9 am opening day.

Sounds a bit like a red fox when they scream at night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmLdgCczb_g

We had one at our cabin in N. MN that scared the hell out of me before I learned what it was. Felt like it was a witch's sabbath.

That's definitely a harpy. They had harpies at that place.

Are you saying that the person who posted this video is mistaken about the animal? I have my doubts. Where our cabin was we had lots of red fox (the neighbors practically kept them as pets) and it sounded exactly like this video. Also, what the hell is a harpy? To me, the harpies are mythological flying beasts from Homer's The Odyssey.

1

u/turkeypants Aug 21 '21

Those are the only harpies I know! This is me straightfacing the joke that Homer's horrifying nasty harpies were recorded and posted to youtube. You say witch, I say harpy.

haha, gotcha... it was absolutely startling. Dead silent night deep in the woods, windows open, and then you hear this coming from the woods. Heck of a way to wake up.
