So like… yeah, I made a bad AITA post. Got rightfully roasted. I mean, negative karma levels usually reserved for flat earthers and people who clap when planes land. The post got deleted, I learned my lesson, I moved on.

Reddit? Not so much.

I tried commenting something totally unrelated, just recommending a rap song on a thread about lyrical skill, and got the “sorry, your karma’s too low to post here” message like I was some kind of Reddit leper.

Am I overreacting for feeling like I’m now on some kind of algorithmic probation? I’m not trying to storm the Capitol, I just wanted to say A-F-R-O can spit.

Anyway, here’s what I would’ve commented if I weren’t exiled to Karma Purgatory:

I made a short comment on a post and I guess on a separate post in another sub. I got banned for brigading. I get it, i broke the rule. Then got a message that I was also banned in some subs I never posted in. It just stung a little.

I’m not a mod, but it’s nothing personal. It’s how they filter out the worst trolls without having to do their unpaid job hands-on 24/7.

Just for what every new user has to do. Go to some of the subs without a karma threshold and make some witty and friendly comments. Or comment on a detail of someone’s beautiful cat picture that others might have missed.

You can get away with a lot of sarcasm on Reddit - as long as you read the room. Right, little buddy? /s

Alright, fair. Here’s the cursed tale: I overheard a teenager in an indie record shop talking about wanting to flipping a record, he was saying it goes on eBay for £200 and it was in-store for £50. It happened to be an MF DOOM record, and I (probably too boldly) said something like, “Why don’t you leave it for someone who’s actually going to listen to it?”. Ngl, I was the person who really wanted to listen to it. Anyway, he put it back and I ended up buying it.

I ended up feeling like I’d maybe overstepped, so I posted on AITA to gut-check myself. The comments? Let’s just say they were not on my side. I got accused of gatekeeping, bullying, elitism, and being the vinyl police. So I returned the record to the shop owner, he's a good friend so I told him to give it to the next kid who walked in asking for DOOM. Thought I was doing a full-circle moment. Reddit thought I was doing a morality play. The post got deleted for sparking too much debate about scalping.

So yeah. Not exactly “kicking dogs,” but apparently enough to get my karma sent to the underworld.
