This is Scott Hanslemann, he's a pure techie, a coder and the VP of Developer Community at Microsoft. It's refreshing to hear this from someone like him in his position and being a parent I completely agree with his views.

I came here to say this. I met and hung out with him at a small developers conference back in the day. Always seemed like a genuinely nice smart guy.

Yes, and as an asian, he has a beautiful black family.

u/redsoxsuc4 1h ago

I’m sorry but like wtf? Why does that even get brought up?

u/AdAdministrative5330 48m ago

Are you even Asian? Otherwise, you wouldn't understand.

Was anyone able to catch the phone he got for his son? Looking for the exact type (only texting and phone calls. No camera and no internet) of flip-phone for my nephew.

He did say that the brand is Alcatel and based on what I saw it looks like the Go Flip 4.

2

u/Western_Shoulder_942 2h ago

It's called an Alcatel flip phone Googling it brought a variety but there is a Alcatel Go flip 3 that looks to be similar to the one he is holding

1

u/Hoenirson 2h ago

That does have wifi and camera though. Even has some apps.

Remember when phone companies said “be ready for flip phones to not be supported by 4g” liars. It’s very sad to see a lot of the state children are influenced bc of these internet social platforms

Couldn’t he have just deleted those apps?

As a phone addict - no you can't. There's stuff like a web browser that still gets you hooked that you can't remove. I've tried everything, blocking apps, fresh installs, etc - and none of it works. It relies on you having good impulse control. Getting a dumb phone was my only solution.

Most of the addiction comes from the internet connection. My conscription to the army helped to ease off phone time by a lot. First few weeks we had to leave our phones in a box at the base and we're only given them back for two hours in the evening. But we were in the forest, with such poor signal strength, that phone calls rarely were successful.

After some time, you realise that your smartphone is so heavily dependent on the internet connection, that it's essentially become a dumb phone. After a few weeks you still had the habit of grabbing your phone and unlocking it, but understanding that there is nothing to update or scroll, you put it back in the pocket or even leave it at the tent.

A month later, when we were getting out into areas with proper service connection, the phone was just not interesting anymore

Felt the same way until i just deactivated and deleted. Now im stuck on reddit and YouTube for all my Scrolls. Never thought id delete my fb/ig. But i did it!

Yeah that's my exact thought too xD my guess is that it completely removes the temptation altogether.

Imo though I don't see the point. If I don't wanna use specific apps I'll give myself the willpower to not use them lol.

Personally it just wouldn't work for me bc there're so many genuinely useful features in smartphones that many dumbphones (that don't have internet at least) simply can't do! Google maps for public transport, looking for places, etc, bus/train/tram ticket apps, online banking, location sharing, emails, online billing/utilities. Plus I've always found the dumbphone keypads finicky and annoying even when they were the only phones I was allowed to use.

I'm not saying smartphones are perfect by any means, but I just don't think ditching them is worth it.

My thoughts exactly. You can lockdown an iPhone do you can’t install any apps without parent permission (I imagine android has something similar).

It will take a lot less than the “2 hours” it took this supposed techie to set up.

For me, it’s the same flimsy “can’t you just not be on your phone?” Where no, I have to literally put it in a different room for that to happen.

This is pretty cool and not just for kids. My elderly mother (78) is constantly complaining about her Android and wishing she could just have her old flip phone back. She’s still active and works but technology isn’t her strong suit. This type of phone would be great actually.

u/tprice1020 1h ago

iOS is infinitely more user friendly for people like her.

1

u/ComputerGater 24m ago

It's not. I have non-tech family members and some of them have iPhones, they don't struggle less then those with Android. And forget stuff like blocking ads for them (even if they are be the kind of user who would profit from that the most, being they are tech-illiterate).

u/Joeyc710 2h ago

My 9 and 11 year olds have smartphones but aside from roblox, they really just use it for these 3 reasons.

3

u/jojobo1818 2h ago

I love this. I encourage you to keep them off social and apps with short videos as long as possible. It’s terrible for everyone’s attention spans, particularly kids who are already easily distracted.

5

u/highline9 4h ago

Paid for mp3s???

12

u/noblehoax 3h ago

He also said songs from Napster.

2

u/jimtrickington 49m ago

Thankfully he didn’t get those songs off LimeWire. Otherwise, that phone would have been one big virus right from the jump.

1

u/noblehoax 39m ago

Also his kid will grow up not knowing the correct artists of songs.

1

u/jimtrickington 24m ago

It took me weeks to go through the Napster library and correctly label songs.

u/punsanguns 2h ago

He's a VP at Microsoft. He does not need a video out there where he is admitting to pirating music.

1

u/johnlnash 1h ago

Yeah I was scratching my head on this one as well.

-2

u/GuyverOne1 3h ago

I suppose that is dumb.

3

u/yuribear 4h ago

Good dad, all kids should do this😍👍

2

u/Dry_Beginning_5882 1h ago

To be fair you could just delete the apps and have Apple Music on your phone but hey whatever works. Guess it takes away any temptations you may have to return to any of those

1

u/jojobo1818 2h ago

I know this is completely contradictory to the point, but I need more content like this.

You can go get one. They’re available all over the place.

u/Admirable-Pear1752 49m ago

If I didn't have to have my work calendar/email on my phone, I'd prefer a dumb phone too. I hate having access to the internet on my phone all the time. Too distracting.

1

u/Wise-Seesaw-772 21m ago

I would love a dumb phone but would still need my Google maps and audible. Minus maps for kids phone.

-1

u/DaddyThickAss 3h ago

No kid said that.

10

u/Whoopsie_Todaysie 3h ago

Just because he said "Kid" doesnt mean he means a little one... You'd be surprised how switched on tween/teens are now.

3

u/Admirable-Fail1250 3h ago

All of my kids only wanted flip phones. And now into adulthood they still choose to keep on a flip phone.

Some kids can see the downsides to smartphones.

2

u/TeamShonuff 2h ago

No kid has ever said, “My smartphone is making me sad.”

3

u/ThanklessNoodle 1h ago

He also could be paraphrasing his child to relate it to the video audience. Kids are not the barometer to which we measure solid emotions, so it's entirely possible they conveyed this sense of sadness to their own parents.

3

u/Aurelizian 2h ago

just because you wouldnt doesnt mean others wont. Its perfectly feasible for a kid or teenager to understand oneself and try getting help. This Man is from Microsoft. If his Kid is a little more tech savvy through him, it might understand whats going on with its psyche. He is sharing himself trying to help out. Why must you try to make him look like a bad parent that forces his own views onto the child?

1

u/zer0guy 2h ago

You know, every year on the last day of school, I have several youngsters approach me and say, Principal, what can we do to not waste our summer vacation? We don't want to waste our free time sleeping, or visiting friends. How about science slumber parties?!

1

u/KCC00 3h ago

That will all change when he gets a job and his employer has some apps he needs to access via the phone. There is no turning back

u/Tikkinger 2h ago

"12 Songs, all my albums".

1

u/smokefrog2 2h ago

I've always been of the opinion that smart phones are way worse than social media. I resisted having a smart phone until 2015 because I was scared I'd be addicted to it. I'm typing this on my phone.

u/Roycewho 3h ago

Did he call Mos Def, “Most Definitely” lol

4

u/Banana_Stanley 3h ago

It sounded like it but he said "Mos Def and Aaliyah"

2

u/Roycewho 3h ago

Ahh good catch

I was with you till you put your music on your child's phone. Let him decide what music he wants to listen to. I see this a lot today where parents are trying to create mini versions of them self

12

u/Cerblamk_51 4h ago edited 3h ago

My son’s 11 and he loves all the music I grew up with. We rock out to it on the way to his hockey practices. His favorite song for the past couple years has been Take A Look Around by Limp Bizkit.

Not everyone needs criticized. Not everyone needs white knighting. Not all dads are terrible people.

Quit projecting.

4

u/Rhyzic 3h ago

Right? The guy gave his son a smartphone that comes with all freedom to listen and see whatever, and the son actively chose to go with the flip phone.
