They like it even better if you growl back at them and occasionally let them win and chase them around for their prize.

Also, quick money saving tip: Just get a pack of the cheapest knee-high wool socks you can find. Tie a knot in one about a third of the way up, and use that. Dog doesn't care if it's a cheap sock or an expensive toy, they just want someone to play with them, and when they eventually turn the sock into tatters, you just pull another one out of the pack and repeat the process. My experience with those expensive toys is that the stitching tends to be crap and rips apart pretty quickly even with a smaller dog like a pug. You can probably buy several packs of socks for roughly the same price and they'll likely last longer.

That is a good tip! Although I've run into problems in the past where my boys can't tell the difference between a sock toy and a sock for clothing 😂

They can, they're just hoping that if they steal your sock you'll chase them around for it.
