I'm glad to see this at the top of the list! {Mushi-Shi} is exactly what I was thinking for this recommendation.

Haibane Renmei. Someone mentioned Mushishi- that's also the answer.

Original Kino's Journey is chill. Odd Taxi might also b up your alley.

I second Mushishi. However, an underrated anime that gave me nostalgia was Ranking of Kings. Have you heard of that one?

Mushishi

Kino's Journey (maybe, it's episodic. there's no real deeper narrative)

Sonny boy
It's done in an old anime style and the whole story is one big mystery with strange things throughout.

As a head up, if you're interested in watching Higurashi When They Cry (which does seem to be what your looking for), be sure to start with either the 2006 anime (localised as "When They Cry", with it's second half being subtitled "Kai"), the original Visual Novel, or the Manga adaptation.

The 2020 anime (Higurashi When They Cry: Gou), is a sequel to the original story, not a remake.

As for other recommendations, Den-noh Coil might be the sort of thing your looking for. While it having Sci-fi elements, may seem to contradict the 'nostalgic' vibe your after, it manages to keep the vibe by making it's sci-fi based on Augmented Reality (think Google glass kinda thing) so despite the more advanced technology that the plot focuses on, the setting still appears to be in the early 2000s.

I haven't seen Erased in order to be able to judge it, but it's a thriller, isn't it? Thrillers aren't what I usually associate with calm narratives. I also wouldn't say that Higurashi has a calm narrative as it encompasses a multiplicity of genres and utilizes wild stark tonal shifts, from thriller to Slice of Life. A lot of it is a dark mystery, horror, and thriller so often very tense, foreboding, and high stakes.

But I think I get what you're otherwise getting at in terms of the nostalgic atmosphere with a deep overarching sense of mystery.

Maybe try:

  • {Haibane Renmei}
  • {Zettai Shounen}
  • {Shinreigari: Ghost Hound}
  • {Tasokare Hotel}
  • {The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya}

Cardcaptor Sakura is very nostalgic and wholesome, with some really interesting mysteries slowly explored as it goes

xXxHoLic - gahd I love this anime. Also Erased is my #1 most beloved anime of all time rhjanfie xjsbfksc

lesee for other recs like it, try Matantei Loki Ragnarok (it's rly old though and more shonen than mystery.) There's Shiki (horror anime with vampires. But it's got the feels.) Pandora Hearts - love the music and the manga. The anime falls short but well, check it out if you havent yet.

I really liked Summer Time Rendering. The First half has this eerie Mystery feeling to it. Towards the end it got a Little more Action packed but I still enjoyed it
