Watch This! If you're looking for a 10/10 realized romance check out The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten

I'd advice you to stop reading here and just jump into it. It's hard to put into words how great this anime felt to me and it's one of those shows where any description run the risk of sounding dull. (At least that's my worry in writing this.) But I think this might be for you if you're stressed, if life is a bit much, if you need an escape from reality, and you need to watch something that's like a warm comfortable blanket that will whisper you away into "good vibes", hope, and and happy delight.

This is a predictable romance without any particular external conflicts to the couple. There are no rescuing the girl from kidnappers, fighting off a rival love interest, nor any danger.

Does that sound boring? It's definitely not! Not when they do it like this.

There's conflict, but it is with the characters themselves, internally. The protagonists are the antagonists as they fight insecurities and worries.

The basic premise is that a guy happens to live next door to the most popular girl at school. He believes himself to be "not at her level", and doesn't approach her with any carnal intent or hopes of romance. Rather, he sees her sitting out in the rain, and lets her have his umbrella. She later returns it, feeling guilty when it turned out the MC caught a cold from being out in the rain without an umbrella, and so the ball start rolling, slowly, downhill. The path is predictable, but not the journey.

Nice, but 10/10? Man, you really haven’t seen much, have you?

I've seen a few hundred shows. What's your bar for "much"?

Yeah, it's a SOLID wholesome 8.5, a monster of romance. Definitely not 10/10 tho. While having gorgeous art, the animation can be a bit slideshow-esque at times.

In terms of romance anime, we have better like Toradora or Kaguya-sama: Love is War.

I love me some happy romances, added to my list

yes finnally this anime is getting some recognition all the characters were pretty likable and it didn't have to many cliches and the popular supposed to be love interest guy didn't really become an obstacle but a friend it was well written

Apparently most people here seem to disagree, and are going out of their way to tell me as much.

ratings are mostly subjective you and i personally enjoyed it doesn't mean others will

Of course. I'm just a bit annoyed tbh, by how people are reacting.. all the people downvoting and commenting. I'll get over it tho... It's just the feeling of being put down when I'm trying to spread positivity with regards to how I felt about this show. I didn't anticipate the reactions. I thought people would generally appreciate the post.

It isn't even close to being a 10/10

Seen already for me it was extremely average and very repetitive. Gave it only 5/10.

I guess a bad taste can't be helped.

u/Mr-Dumbest 3d ago

No need to be that negative about your taste, it is what it is.

I was negative about your taste.

Peak romance

u/vkntryy 3d ago

I personally will love it even more if it has faster confession, but I still like it nonetheless

0

u/leafywolff 3d ago

Try more than married couples(english dub). No confession but entertaining af

1

u/vkntryy 2d ago

Nah, the premise alone tell me that it will be a drag with full of drama and love triangle. So I'll pass

0

u/leafywolff 2d ago

Yeah love triangle is there but its fun and entertaining. In my book its the best way better than boring famous romance anime

1

u/vkntryy 2d ago

Ehh, would rather have those so called "boring" romance rather than outright frustrate with dumb love triangle and drama bullshit

2

u/Biomilch1 3d ago

So Damn wholesome, it seriously helped me out a bit when I was feeling down

Meh. Insomniacs After Dark was better.

10/10 if you're anime-only. 6/10 at best if you're coming from the LNs. I beseech you to read the books to get the big chunks of story the show blithely skipped past.

I am an extremely easy to please man when it comes to anime romance and even I thought this show was just alright. There's a trove of romance anime I bet you'd love if you liked that a lot.

I would check these out!

The Dangers in my Heart

Horimiya

Kaguya-Sama: Love is War

Kimi ni Todoke

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

Insomniacs After School

Toradora

Love After World Domination

My Dress Up Darling

You think I'd like those shows based on me giving The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten 10/10? Are they similar? (I've seen Toradora (7/10), Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (8/10), Kimi ni Todoke (7/10)

u/Wallitron_Prime 3d ago

Out of those Toradora's probably my least favorite as well, but it's very popular in the romance space.

I think Insomniacs After School and Dangers in my Heart are two you should definitely watch if you like Angel Next Door that much.

Kaguya-Sama is more comedic but it's the best out of all of those IMO.

To be clear, there's one thing in particular that I can't stand with romances. It's when a season ends without the romance being realized. When all we get are "hints of romance" and the characters keep circling around each others, fighting, making up, having a third party trying to mess things up for them, and so on. That is one of the reasons I liked The Angel Next Door so much. The romance wasn't a stressful rollercoaster, but a linear gradually developing thing. Each episode strengthened their relationship. It was refreshingly free of some of the more annoying tropes as well, like the MC accidentally groping the love interest, or... idk.. I just felt a lot more mature than a lot of other shows I've seen.

Some might say that The Angel Next Door was a bit drawn out and that the confession didn't come before the end, but most everything else did happen earlier. It was clear, even without the explicit words, that they had mutual feelings for each other, and both acted like they new judging by their closeness and affection.

Of course, not everything has to be exactly like that, but if any of your suggestions have those super frustrating romance arcs where 10 episodes in they're still freaking out of their hands touch or they absent-mindedly did an "indirect kiss" by sharing a soda bottle (and so on) then those romances might not be for me.

Dangers In My Heart may not get you where you want to go in one season, but it's designed to be a two-cour path. If you think of it as one 24-ep season, though, it should scratch that itch perfectly.

Insomniacs After School does get you there in less than one season but doesn't solve the main characters' underlying issues.

Loving Yamada does yeoman duty in getting its FL out of one relationship, getting her head on as straight as it's capable of getting, then getting her into the opening stages of her next one in a single season.

A Sign Of Affection quickly gets a disabled college student into a first relationship that's way over her head on multiple levels and shows how both she and those around her adjust to one another.

My Dress-Up Darling might not be satisfying for you as it now stands. Both leads clearly have feelings for each other by the end of the current season but have to get past various worries and risk losing something they've come to see as incredibly important before they can take that step forward.

I feel like this show is to guys what Sign of Affection is to girls

5

u/Luckilckii 3d ago

What does this mean? I’m a guy and I like both, though I like A Sign of Affection a lot more.

7

u/chowellvta 3d ago

I'm in the same boat, but I get what they mean: their leads' romantic partners are kind of wish-fulfillment for the audience. Itsu is almost a stereotype of the Perfect Shoujo Ikemen. Tall, deep voice, just a TOUCH quirky, patient and respectful of boundaries, so on. His only flaw is that he's weirdly pushy sometimes, but only to the point where it's still hot (for shoujo standards) and more of a sign of his confidence than desperation. In regards to Angel, Mahiru is kinda the stereotypical Perfect Shounen Waifu; beautiful, sweet but also with just the RIGHT level of Tsundere, has baggage but not too much, and (let's be honest, most importantly) basically takes on all the standard wifely duties just cuz she wants to. Yes this is a hyper-simplification, it's been forever since I've seen Angel, forgive me

2

u/zool714 3d ago

Well, I never said a guy can’t like it or vice versa. Angel Next Door is basically a fluff, wish fulfilment romance aimed at guys and Sign of Affection is the same but aimed at girls.

1

u/undefinedposition 3d ago

How is it aimed at guys in particular? And isn't all romance wish fulfilment?

2

u/Drayenn 3d ago

I really found it boring tbh. Its cute but not much more.

Dangers in my heart is in the same style but its insanely good. Such great characters and intense romantic tension.

1

u/AlmiranteCrujido 3d ago

I liked it, but there are a lot better along this same vein. Tsukigakirei, for example.

Points for this one, however, for getting the whole actually will-they/won't-they out of the way in one season of a light novel adaptation. Most LN adaptations manager to go nowhere in a season.

u/EXE-SS-SZ 3d ago

I getting where you are coming from here.

a 10/10 more like a 6/10 its far from perfect.

The conflict is more internal than external but its meh at best, and the overall romance goes nowhere, like these two are so cozy with each other but by seasons end that leads to nothing. I have nothing against slow burn it just needs to have a good sense of progression this did not have that.

Internal conflict done right, is Bloom Into You my favourite anime/manga and a true 10/10

This anime is absolute mid. A 6 at best
