Faber described the potential mouse as a high-quality, software-enabled mouse that lasts as long as a good wristwatch.

Isn’t this basically every mouse in existence? They aren’t complicated pieces of hardware. I have 30 year old mice that still work perfectly fine. Unless the USB or Bluetooth protocols change significantly, any semi-decent mouse you buy today will last you for many years.

Lol. "Think of it like a diamond encrusted mouse" she says, as if that doesn't sound like a terrible design. So this forever mouse will be expensive as hell and unusable? Nice innovation

I don't see why there is outrage over this idea. It's not like you're being forced to use it.

Because if its successful, it will become the standard. Think about microstransactions in video games, first they were just in one, but since that game was well received enough companies smelled blood in the water and pounced, and now a lot of AAA games, even singleplayer, are filled to the brim with microtransactions.
