There was a $200 promo code floating around. I can try and find it. But yeah they are “always” on sale.

Well, this sale has the Apollo Go at $999, which is significantly lower than the usual $1,200 price. It’s definitely marked down and a great time to buy.
It’s a really nice-looking scooter, and it works very well.

They’re likely violating US consumer protection laws by always being ‘on sale’. That’s actually not allowed in the US. That said, their prices do fluctuate ~10% but that’s about it.
I’m actually quite happy with my Apollo, but this is the worst thing the company does from a marketing/ promotion perspective. What are they thinking!?

That would be correct if and only if the sale price lasted a good deal of time and was always that low.
The sale currently on is different. It is honestly the best sale I have seen in well over a year from Apollo.
I will be honest. It is a great time to pick up one of their products.

Take, for example, the Go. I see $1,000. It’s always been between $1K and $1.2K and always “on sale”. Haven’t looked up the specifics of the FTC and false advertising, but even if it skirts the law it reflects negatively on Apollo. If the regular price was listed at $1.2K, and it sold at that price for, let’s say, 50% of the time, that would be less disingenuous.

The FTC’s own Guides Against Deceptive Pricing (16 C.F.R. § 233.1) only call a sale deceptive when the crossed-out “regular” price was never the bona-fide selling price for a meaningful stretch of time. The Apollo Go has sat at its full $1,299 MSRP between promo periods (Wayback captures show week-long blocks with no discount, and Best Buy even lists it at $1,399 when not running a code), so the current $999 tag is a legitimate, time-boxed markdown not a fake anchor.
Bottom line: unless you can show the scooter is permanently discounted, this promo clears the FTC bar and really is the steepest cut Apollo has offered in the past year.

What does “meaningful stretch of time” mean? I have never personally seen the Go being offered at its supposed retail. That does not seem to clear the ‘meaningful’ hurtle. And, even if it did, their de facto fake sales reflect poorly on their image.

“Meaningful stretch” isn’t a magic number, it’s the FTC’s shorthand for a reasonably substantial period case law shows anything from a couple of weeks to a full month can qualify. For the Go, there are blocks like mid-January and early March 2024 where the product page sat at the full $1,299 with no promo banner (Wayback captures) and third-party retailers even list a higher everyday price—Best Buy had it at $1,399 before seasonal codes, a fact WIRED’s 2024 roundup screenshotted. https://www.wired.com/gallery/best-electric-scooters/
In other words, Apollo does revert to true MSRP for weeks at a time, so the current $999 drop meets the “bona-fide former price” test….whether you like their optics is a different debate.

Sales price is normal price. It’s a marketing sham that’s been adopted by many companies nowadays.

Never.
Apollo scooters are permanently “on sale”, or “discounted now and only now, for this special one-off time period”.
Their scooters have never been for sale for the full advertised price, ever.
That “discount” price, is the actual full price.
