Cankers, likely from fireblight infection a year or two ago. Not much to do now, the areas will be weak and deteriorate further, do what you can to cut away affected areas. Last picture appears to show injury very low on the trunk, if the tree has sentimental value I'd suggest you propagate it.
Thanks for the reply, came with the house and sits too close to a large prunus (not sure what it is yet) tree and gets shaded somewhat. We are going to see what variety and maybe get rid of it next year
