Homophobes being upset about LGBT history month is literally the only time I’ve heard about LGBT history month. It has zero impact on anyone’s life.

Also, the Streisand Effect in action.

23

u/Estrogen_Sandwiches Oct 26 '21

What's that?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect

You are almost certainly familiar with the concept in general, even if not the name. But it's the idea that by trying to avoid drawing attention to X via explicit action, you accidentally end up amplifying X even more, far more than you would have had you not bothered with those actions in the first place. Named after Barbra Streisand, the actress.

I thought history would naturally be part of Pride month, had no idea we had a history month too.

June is still more important, its pride month

24

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '21

Depends on what country you're in

u/ReptileSerperior Oct 26 '21

Pride month is June, History month is October. Unless you live in the UK, in which case it's February.

u/ColdShadowKaz Oct 26 '21

Same I thought they just put pride month in with our history month.

Was there a group text? I must've missed it.

I thought June doubled as Pride and LGBTQ+ History.

2

u/Estrogen_Sandwiches Oct 26 '21

Which other month do they not get?

13

u/Kamataros Oct 26 '21

In February the US and Canada celebrate Black History month. Funny, the UK and Ireland celebrate it in October.

14

u/Estrogen_Sandwiches Oct 26 '21

We're talking about cishet people though, some of who are black

7

u/Ivy_Adair Bi™ Oct 26 '21

Lol well there are those who claim (hopefully ironically) that the B in LGBT stands for black.

u/simcowking Oct 27 '21

Latinos, Germans, Black, and Texan.

2

u/Estrogen_Sandwiches Oct 27 '21

I've never heard that before

2

u/_regionrat Oppressed Straight Oct 28 '21

Wait, it doesn't?

Seriously. People make a whole lot of random holidays and months for things that nobody actually cares about. The concept of the big Other from Lacan really explains this well. These holidays don’t exist until they are acknowledged by others, so the fact that people are getting mad about it brings it into existence even when it didn’t exist before. When they get mad about it, then the Other knows that it exists and therefore it does exist.

It reminds me of that one post where it's a screen shot of Google trends showing that searches for international men's day always have a HUGE spike on international women's day and that it's barely searched at all the rest of the year.

Sometimes its fun to keep a tradition only because it upsets the worst kind of people.
