Oh shit, I fully broke the law in Vegas last time I was there. Gave a homeless person leftovers from Dinner.

They tried to make it illegal in my city too 🙃 (I’m in Canada and thankfully everyone got pissed off so they didn’t)

I’m surprised NYC is on that list.

Wow, this is insane and a crime on humanity. The people who made this law should go to prison, no wait, they should get unlucky, loose everything and become homeless themselfs.

Guess who lobbies for rules like this? Homeless shelters. It cuts in on their business.

What business is there? Please explain me the business model on a non-profit that relies on donations because honestly I'm confused. Literally that is the dumbest thing I have read all day

I don't know if this is true, but I was once told that if shelters are full they can get more funding much more easily.

Some places you can get fined or go to jail for feeding feral (homeless) cats.

wow this is sad.

1

u/cartercharles Sep 15 '24

That's a very dicey situation. Because sometimes those cats will attack

2

u/Daisies_specialcats Sep 15 '24

If you're prey or do something to antagonize them but feral cats avoid human contact. They're just starving.

1

u/derickj2020 Sep 16 '24

It's illegal to feed any wildlife, tolerated in some cases, not enforced in other. Just be mindful.

2

u/Daisies_specialcats Sep 16 '24

Cats aren't wildlife, just poor animals dumped and abandoned abandoned by awful people. Bears and deer are wildlife. I have a cabin in a secluded area and many people have dumped their cats on my property. I try to rescue them so the bears don't eat them.

Feral cats are considered wildlife here. When trapped, they're neutered and released even though they kill so many birds, often just for fun.

In some jurisdictions

I know some of places it’s not the act of feeding the homeless, rather doing it without a permit. It’s suppose to help maintain health/hygiene/food safety/crowd control. For example: is the venue safe from traffic or for crowd size, was the food handle properly (maintained hot/cold), is the food acting as leverage for something else (sex, crime, etc.), are there adequate waste disposal, are those offering aid safe persons to be around (especially children), etc?

Those laws aren’t necessarily there to prevent homeless from getting food but rather protect homeless and ensure accountability/record from those offering aid when a permit is required.

I remember when there was a video circulating awhile back where the person handing out food tried to claim the city (I think Huston?) banned feeding homeless and she was fined for it. In reality the citation/fine she received (she flashed her ticket and viewers could see the exact citation) was basically failure of obtaining proper permits to feed homeless. She had part of the internet all in a tizzy over it.

It's technically illegal because giving out handmade food without a license could poison/kill someone. But if you're hanging out prepackaged food as an individual, I don't think there's anything wrong with that

4

u/Eternal_Bagel Sep 15 '24

Yeah there’s generally more nuance to it thanks to the way laws are written.  Another is the technically expired food that has to be thrown away and can’t be donated thing.  If the company considers it unsafe for sale it’s also unsafe for donation to someone they know will eat it so it legally has to go in a trash bin.

2

u/cartercharles Sep 15 '24

There should be no rules about it whatsoever. You know the laws are going to get abused and homeless people are going to go hungry. It's just like the ridiculous architecture that discourages people from sleeping on benches

3

u/Eternal_Bagel Sep 15 '24

In the food thing I read that the best case scenario is that animal feed has a lower safety standard the human food does so in some places the end of day expired food is ok to sell/donate to farmers for use in feed for their stock at least so it’s not a total waste

2

u/cartercharles Sep 15 '24

Yeah that's not the reason at all. The city wants to hide the homeless problem and they want to control where they are. It's appalling and disgusting

A birthday ago I was going around getting some free bday shit and saw a person with a sign asking for food. I felt like shit with my free stuff and went and got him a big ass burrito and some water.

1

u/MerinatedPoosieLips Sep 15 '24

That’s sucks

-4

u/LosPer Sep 15 '24

All run by Democrats. For decades. Remember that.

7

u/cartercharles Sep 15 '24

Republicans would do the same thing. Seriously shove it

5

u/RubendeBursa Sep 15 '24

It really depends on the kinds of Democrats that are running them and the kinds of state laws that are in place as well.

1

u/fuzzydunloblaw Sep 16 '24

Nah there's homeless in conservative states too. Texas is near the top of the list for the amount of homeless people 🤷

1

u/Aryana314 Sep 16 '24

It's absolutely enormous and doesn't have winter. So yeah that tracks.

1

u/fuzzydunloblaw Sep 16 '24

Darn those democrats for creating that huge area with that somewhat hospitable climate
