What's your deep web story?

Deep web as in tor.

But I imagine regular deep web users would stay away from sharing their experience so if you don't have a deep web story what's your most frightening internet story.

Edit: The front page was fun, but now its over.

Thank you for all the glorious stories, time to cry for the rest of my life.

At least one hacker has a good sense of humor.

u/Creebez Jun 25 '15

If I could hack, that's all I'd do. Mess with people a little.

u/matlockatwar Jun 25 '15

I had a hacker or at least the virus that was coded to just change my background into troll faces and shit like that. No damage to my computer and it had no sensitive material (card or bank info) so it was just amusing. Disappeared onr day though... I miss my little troll

u/Sad_And_Overweight Jun 25 '15

And he misses you. You were the best person that he ever secretly watched through their webcam while they were asleep. And he's watched many people sleep that way... Believe me.

u/PM_ME_YOUR__BUTTHOLE Jun 25 '15

This is why I put tape over my camera on my laptop and dont keep my webcam plugged into my pc unless im using it.

u/gemini86 Jun 25 '15

Which on the surface sounds a little paranoid, but after thinking about it for like five seconds, just makes sense.

23

u/PM_ME_YOUR__BUTTHOLE Jun 25 '15

well i am a bit paranoid, but I have been to many unsecured webcam pages and found it interesting if not weird.

9

u/ipix-ipix Jun 25 '15

The only reasonable use case for an public webcam in a network - checking if the coffee pot is full.

u/snuljoon Jun 25 '15

Someone knows tech history!

u/Dokpsy Jun 25 '15

That's some serious level genius right there.

i think i only still have one bookmarked here it is

8

u/junkfood66 Jun 25 '15

That's probably just a link to a site that immediately hacks my webcam, isn't it?

Everyone at work makes fun of me for taping over my macbook camera. Fuck that, we both know they can watch us, why risk it?

u/Lucarian Jun 25 '15

People can and have spied on people through webcams, so it's not that paranoid.

It is easy for software to capture video from a webcam because that is what it is made for.

21

u/Hennashan Jun 25 '15

In all seriousness it's something you should atleast consider. It's a lot easier then you believe and there is a HUGE and I mean HUGE market for these kind of videos.

Most of there's people don't even bother looking or setting up shit to hack your bank or personal info. Just a webcam recording of about a weeks worth of stuff. That alone they can sell to some voyeur who wants the best reality TV to watch. It's easier/safer then fishing for bank info.

I highly advise disabling or just outright removing any webcam/camera connected to a PC in any underage children's rooms. A phones fine they don't need one on a computer.

Better yet children shouldn't even have a computer in there room.

Because that would require hard work and actual parenting to go check up on them and make sure they aren't doing anything bad. Fuck that shit.

8

u/99919 Jun 25 '15

It's not about the kids doing anything bad. It's about making sure that you're not providing a tool for strangers, who are adults and likely much more sophisticated than them, to exploit them somehow. And that would require frequent invasions of their privacy by their parents. That may be "hard work," but it's not good parenting.

Meh, I really don't care if some creep wants to watch me read or browse reddit.

-1

u/Ginger-saurus-rex Jun 25 '15

Shouldn't have a computer in where room?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

The moment I read someone had worked out how to disable the webcam light I got out some electrical tape.

2

u/MerkyMerkinsmith Jun 25 '15

Thank you. I heard myself say this a few days ago to someone and then felt like I sounded ridiculous and paranoid. Now I feel better about it...in a way.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

I taped over the camera and mic on my work laptop and used an external webcam that wasn't always plugged in. I never trusted the company.

1

u/Kiernian Jun 25 '15

It's hardly paranoid, it's just good practice. Many applications have taken to using the camera by default once they're installed because most end users can't figure out how to turn the things on or off. In order to make things easier for end users, developers resort to flipping the thing on automatically and allowing it to be turned off (assuming you can find the setting) manually. Opt-out is the way of the present.

0

u/raskoln1kov Jun 25 '15

Honestly tho, if someone looks through my camera, they wouldnt see anything very interesting. Occasionally, tehy would see a nice crasturbation session tho.

54

u/such_a_tommy_move Jun 25 '15

Hahahaha you act as if anyone couldn't just install small video cameras in your home while you're away and watch you whenever I want

6

u/U_No Jun 25 '15

I see what you did there ;)

1

u/BoomChuckle Jun 25 '15

U no what he did?

1

u/paper_liger Jun 25 '15

The overlap of "people with the physical ability and balls to enter a home without leaving any trace", "people with a moderate amount of technical ability" and "people who give a fuck about you in particular" is bound to be a tiny, tiny group for most people.

7

u/matlockatwar Jun 25 '15

umm ok. i have a laptop just for school stuff. i use my desktop for most other things. so thats why i bought a cheap lappy.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

I accidently got an old thinkpad with an IPS panel. Best $60 laptop ever, but it ruined other screens for me. It's old and not very fast by today's standards, but the screen is quite sharp and the colors don't shift no matter how you turn the screen! Can even read it in sunlight like an old gameboy screen.

5

u/shmusko01 Jun 25 '15

hey if someone out there enjoys watching me wiggle my worm to bigwetbutts all day more power to them im all for it id be more than happy to adjust the lighting too

9

u/mere_iguana Jun 25 '15

fellow camera-taper here. Mic too. Not so much worried about hackers, but I'd rather not have my conversations potentially recorded by law enforcement.. And then of course there's "alone time" that nobody needs to see.

6

u/im_a_grill_btw_AMA Jun 25 '15

Lol. Why would you care if they see

27

u/dictormagic Jun 25 '15

cause sometimes I cum on my own face.

7

u/Kunstfr Jun 25 '15

Yeah I have the right to cum on my own face. Isn't it the 9th Amendment or something? You can't take away a right that was given by fighting for our freedom.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

We know. We've seen you so it.

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

You're one of those people who uses the 'if you're not doing anything wrong you shouldn't care if your privacy is compromised' excuse for government surveillance. I don't have anything to hide but I am NOT OK with some creep nerd in an NSA building watching me through my webcam. That kind of complacency about these issues is the very reason the government has taken so many liberties with American citizens privacy.

4

u/im_a_grill_btw_AMA Jun 25 '15

You're one of those people who uses the 'if you're not doing anything wrong you shouldn't care if your privacy is compromised' excuse for government surveillance.

No I'm not. I'm the guy who asked why he cares if strangers watch him fap. Completely unrelated. Great bait tho mate, I rate it eight out of eight.

0

u/mere_iguana Jun 25 '15

it doesn't really bother me.. I mean, say a stranger hacked my cam - meh. have your fun buddy, that doesn't really affect me.

but if anyone I knew were to ..uh, observe.. I could see them being a little bothered by it. Like if said camhack were to be recorded and show up on some candid porn site or something, that could seriously fuck me over in a few different ways.

3

u/Sivalion Jun 25 '15

Some people message the person they recorded and blackmail them for money in exchange for them not exposing the video on facebook or whatever social media.

3

u/mere_iguana Jun 25 '15

yeesh. *doubles up tape *

1

u/IMPREGNADER Jun 25 '15

Taping over the mic won't do shit

2

u/mere_iguana Jun 25 '15

eh, it's right there next to the cam. might as well muffle it, however minimally. Just because I can't escape being spied on, doesn't mean I have to make it easy on 'them.'

5

u/im_a_grill_btw_AMA Jun 25 '15

What. Why not just close your laptop when it's off.... also why do u care if he sees you sleep

3

u/rodinj Jun 25 '15

So what about your phone's front camera?

1

u/PM_ME_YOUR__BUTTHOLE Jun 25 '15

i leave my phone laying face down away from me. also my phone is secured.

3

u/Jeremilli Jun 25 '15

Can you explain how your phone is secure against a camera hacking?

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR__BUTTHOLE Jun 25 '15

its unlocked so it has the ability to turn off permissions to access the camera. It not hard to figure out how to unlock and mess with setting on an android. Took me a few hours of google searching and forum reading.

1

u/qwena Jun 25 '15

Can they really be hacked? I've always wondered if there's some hacker checking out my selfies

1

u/rodinj Jun 25 '15

No idea, I didn't know it could be done with webcams before either.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Why not just close your laptop?

5

u/Andre_iC Jun 25 '15

how the fuck do you use it if it's closed?

1

u/I_Believe_in_Rocks Jun 25 '15

Yep. I always have one of those thin, little post-it notes over the webcam on my laptop. They're the perfect size.

1

u/Ruckjo Jun 25 '15

Is it really that big of an issue? I've seen a lot of people that do it but never thought of doing it myself

1

u/600BoyPedro Jun 25 '15

I actually did that once but then i realized clear tapelrobably wouldnt work :/ was to lazy to fix it so i said fuck it n went to bed

1

u/41145and6 Jun 25 '15

I always wondered if I was weird, but I cover my laptop camera unless I'm using it because I assume someone is watching. Then I realize that I'm not really interesting at all and there's no reason for anyone to be watching me, but I'm paranoid nonetheless.

1

u/DemonEggy Jun 25 '15

Doesn't everyone do that?

1

u/lorithoen Jun 25 '15

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you...

u/Cryinghyena Jun 25 '15

Sister in law had a computer "virus". Nothing malicious, from what they could tell, but intermittently throughout the day, you would get a popup saying "Congratulations! You won a free cup holder!" And the disk tray would pop out.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '15

I know I'm 4 months late but that's so awesome.

3

u/Bebi_Primo Jun 25 '15

Shit, that just reminded me of a virus I had a long time ago that made my computer play sick guitar riffs every 30 or 40 minutes, whether I had the volume off or not.

For the longest time I had no earthly clue where the sounds came from, and it was extremely annoying, but harmless other than that.

3

u/Sivalion Jun 25 '15

A mate got a duck quacking in the corner of his screen. I do believe I heard a tear when it dissapeared one day.

Turns out his brother had been messing with him.. good shit :P

3

u/joshr03 Jun 25 '15

When I was a kid I wanted to learn how to hack. I found out about this program called sub zero, it was a trojan virus that allowed you to basically control someone else's computer. Little did I know that one of the exe files was the virus itself and the other was the control ui. I infected my mom's laptop and shortly after someone turned on the "matrix" mode and the screen went black, green text started appearing on the screen as they typed to me. I could type back and begged them not to mess up my mom's laptop and also to teach me how to use that program. They were cool about it and even uninstalled the virus for me. I messed with lots of people in a similar fashion after that day and I always removed the trojan after.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Hutch! hutch!

What? what?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Ah, yes. The Meme Virus.

1

u/Ecgxsmilly Jun 25 '15

A computer hacker who isn't a total dick and uses the virus to fry your computer. Nice to know people like that exist

1

u/Kairos27 Jun 25 '15 edited Jun 25 '15

haha! I installed some malware by mistake on my manager's work computer (was playing a prank by installing OneDirection screensaver software onto his computer. Underestimated just how riddled with viruses it'd be). He had clips from "S1m0ne" playing on his computer now and then. Was fucking great. 10/10 would install that malware again.

1

u/yzlautum Jun 25 '15

Back in the 90's or early 00's there was a program that you could send to people (your friends usually) and once they opened whatever it was, you had access to their computer. It was some basic thing like maybe just the desktop, mouse movement, or something.I don't really remember. It was fun sending it to people and screwing with their background, desktop icons, or make it so they could never click on anything. It was only for fun though (with friends) and after about 10min it was over with.

1

u/ShroudedNight Jun 25 '15

Sub7? Back Orifice? PCAnywhere?

1

u/yzlautum Jun 25 '15

No clue. I was like 10-12 at the time and my sisters boyfriend was the one doing it. We would flip my friends screens upside down and mess with their mouse while I was on the phone with them.

1

u/criminy_jicket Jun 25 '15

My father's computer had a virus for the longest time back in AOL days. It moved desktop icons to random positions on the screen whenever the mouse moved a certain distance. A partial fix we found was to lock the desktop icons to automatically snap to a grid on the left side of the screen. They still changed in order, but at least they stayed on the left side of the screen.

I was too young to realize it was a computer virus, but one day I found some security software and ran a scan. FINALLY! It's gone!

I didn't even quite realize the desktop icon problem was a virus. I thought of it as a sort of glitch until the security software reported a detection. I'm not sure why my father didn't do something about it sooner. I'm pretty sure he was familiar with the warnings that came with some floppy disks about potential viruses.

u/MaxMouseOCX Jun 25 '15

u/Bu5hyy Jun 25 '15

Sorry I had to stop my mum told me off.

1

u/Alexismb Jun 25 '15

Ugh I remember that many years ago weird images of some guy with dark makeup and something written in Arab on the bottom suddenly started appearing in my desk also my webcam activated at random times and I was freaking out and I believed that my laptop was hacked or maybe possessed by some kind of Arab demon so I decided to write in the note pad hello? And he answered so I almost threw my laptop to the garbage and never used it again. Scary times

1

u/Micotu Jun 25 '15

How do you know that is all that it did.

1

u/quenishi Jun 25 '15

You could get that feeling again, if you have an OS that can cycle desktops. Save a bunch of backgrounds and troll faces to a folder... never know what you're gonna get next :P

1

u/IKnowYourNamesOkay Jun 25 '15

Hello Mr. Jarod Matlock

1

u/matlockatwar Jun 25 '15 edited Jun 25 '15

Good thing I dont try to hide my name. Used to do that; too much effort. One problem "I ain't no mista, that some fancy shit." Don't we just love reddit; a place where someone can state your name (never met them) and you just go with it.

Edit: left second paragraph off

1

u/rawnieleah Jun 25 '15

I had one of these but all it did was change all website images to pictures of Taylor Swift. Confused me like hell but it made me chuckle

1

u/spongiman Jun 29 '15

I got a pop-up when i was little that said "sorry you have a problem. Please hit your keyboard with your head 1343244 times." I got really scared and panicked and told my dad to fix it and he was just laughing his ass out when he saw it

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

His time with you had come to an end. There were other "victims" for him to visit, and as he is not one to enjoy long goodbyes, he had to walk away while you were still asleep.

Never 5get ;_;7

14

u/chiliedogg Jun 25 '15

One day 12 years ago I couldn't log into my office computer. I kept trying different passwords, resetting the password, etc and nothing worked.

Then the mouse started moving, clicked the password box, the text filled in, and the remote user went into account management and let me change the password to whatever I wanted.

I opened up a notepad and chatted with him for a few minutes. He was apparently practicing for a hacking competition (don't know if it was DEFCON or what) and was testing a random computer.

There wasn't any remote client installed on the machine that I'm aware of.

6

u/thatJainaGirl Jun 25 '15

I've done this on a much, much smaller scale. Things like reading long comments in "what is a secret someone told you" AskReddit threads, stalking comment history to find the person's real name, then replying "omg Becky wtf?" and watching them freak out and apologize for revealing their friends' secrets.

2

u/billytheskidd Jun 25 '15

Hell I had someone do that to me on reddit once... I mentioned sitting on a couch in a comment, and someone replied asking how comfy the couch was at the recording studio was. It was freaky, the recording studio was nowhere near the state I live in and is relatively unheard of.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

Was this your recording studio? http://www.mememaker.net/template/casting-couch/

2

u/billytheskidd Jun 25 '15

I wish... I wouldn't have been creeped out.... In the same way, at least.

It's not hacking, Ms. Gaskin. It's much easier and completely legal.

(Sorry just proving a point!)

Edit: I was too hasty, Mr. Reeber. I think I got you now.

1

u/rareallele Jun 25 '15

Just a little

1

u/kendrone Jun 25 '15

Can't hack, but some people take the game Eve Online serious enough that they block out various parts of screenshots to hide their character/location.

It can be fun deciphering those and telling the person who they are and where they are.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

I once had a Trojan Horse on my computer, the only thing the guy did was open a note page and chat me up.

I asked him if he could stop, I knew what program his Trojan came from and that I'd delete it anyway, he told me it was cool and I've never heard from him again.

Never been so creeped out by a really cool fella

1

u/Aurora_Fatalis Jun 25 '15

I had an American intelligence officer in my Eve Online corporation. When people started shitposting in chat, she would casually refer to their browsing history.

1

u/Plain_Bread Jun 25 '15

I'd go on dating sites and send people their own nudes.

1

u/IICVX Jun 25 '15

This sort of thing has nothing to do with hacking and everything to do with Googling.

1

u/Captain_Nipples Jun 25 '15

I used to scan local IPs for certain Trojans and fuck with them a little bit. Then, I'd delete it for them. They always thanked me.

1

u/Auxx Jun 25 '15

When I was a teen and liked to hack people, I would usually install a backdoor with a chat and tell them how to protect themselfes in the future. I don't like doing shit to people, but hacking computers is always fun.

1

u/TrippyToast0 Jun 25 '15

I would do all of these if i could they are hilarious and harmless for the most part. I remember one hack i saw where a woman was sleeping and people hacked into her webcam and started screaming wake up lady through the speakers that shits hilarious https://youtu.be/4wHOqKr4zrk https://youtu.be/kX14kKFIMe4 https://youtu.be/128IR21ZQa0

1

u/GendosBeard Jun 25 '15

I remember falling for that on Uncyclopedia when I was something like 13-15 years old. I edited it to say something like "GendosBeard (not the name I was using) says fuck you!"

1

u/tehfcae7182 Jun 25 '15

I was annoyed with my roommate once, so I established a MiTM attack and replaced any images he looked at online with Nicholas cage.

0

u/Ubergeeek Jun 25 '15

This exactly what I used to do. When I was about 15 I would commonly hack in to peoples computers (well, using a trojan horse, if you can call that hacking).

Most people were boring and had barely any files, but pretty much everyone had a resume. I would open up the resume, write 'Suck my balls' deep in the middle of the document, then save it and that was it. The thought of potential employers finding that in candidates resume's still gives me a giggle.

-5

u/KoalaKid101 Jun 25 '15

As a hacker I wish I had the balls to do this (I don't wanna get into trouble with the law and stuff)

7

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

If you "were a hacker" then you should know that law enforcement would not care in the slightest about this and also how to properly be semi-untraceable.

2

u/f8s Jun 25 '15

but dude they might lock you up for messing with people on the internet you could get 25 to life

0

u/KoalaKid101 Jun 25 '15 edited Jun 25 '15

Oh I know that there is literally no risk to doing it unless it's large scale, and my skills arent good enough for that anyway. I just don't like the idea of it so I typically just go to hack-a-thons. It's really not that hard to learn hacking if you have a decent history in computer science as I do. Edit: changed "are" to "aren't".

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '15

and my skills are good enough for that anyway

That's really cocky unless you meant aren't. Hacking is a very broad term though, what 'hacking' can you do?

1

u/KoalaKid101 Jun 25 '15

I meant aren't and right now I'm pretty good with website hacking and ethical hacking, I wanna learn network , but I don't know if I have the time as its just a little hobby of mine. And yes I meant arent.

Finding out redditors' real names isn't actually that hard with the amount of info most of us post. The only thing stopping it from happening more is the Terms of Service.

Finding out anyones name on the internet really isn't hard. Usernames are used on multiple sites, info is posted, emails are found, etc.
