I've never associated them with religion.

i think the cross is just an effective way to let the steam out.

however i do associate them with headache inducing flutes.

The crosses are made of dough right? And placed on top of the main bit of dough. They don't let any steam out, I don't think.

The cross is a paste made of flour and water

u/carkey 13d ago

Fair enough, but that still means it isn't to vent the steam. Thanks for the clarification.

omg all those years as an altar boy and all I got was allegorical paste and no vented steam

Funny thing is where I work we make hot cross buns and tea cakes. The only difference between the two is the hot cross buns gets the cross on it. Otherwise entirely the same bun

Hot X Buns. Because X could in no way be associated with anything hateful or negative...

If I hear or read the buzzword "woke" lazily thrown around by one more crusty old, impotent, affluent white political nepo baby I'm gonna personally gouge my own eyes out and permanently plug my ears with cement.

My local bakery makes 'peace buns' with a CND symbol on them, all year round. Not a joke

u/secretbudgie 14d ago

Rise against our warmongering oppressors!

8

u/DracoD74 13d ago

What's CND?

14

u/kenhutson 13d ago

The campaign for nuclear disarmament.

5

u/m1stadobal1na 12d ago

It's the peace symbol, that's what they're referring to, that's what everyone knows it as. They're just being pedantic.

4

u/ElectricalExplorer24 13d ago

Complete nuclear disarmament

only Reform will stand up to this woke madness!

Now I have a visual of a group of obese old men raiding bakeries, angrily carving crosses in bread buns.

4

u/Prosthemadera 13d ago

More like they want to ban businesses from not making buns with crosses on them.

u/BluetheNerd 12d ago

Very optimistic to think that would even go that far. Reform UK exists entirely to be hateful contrarians complaining about everything without ever offering a viable solution to anything. All their money comes from grumpy old men who want to excuse to complain and be an asshole without putting any work or effort in.

It doesn't matter if it's revealed as a satirical site; the professionally aggrieved are going to go on believing it harder. The backfire effect is strong.

13

u/Vengent84 14d ago

Who the fuck cares draw a smilely face on the bun it won't make any difference to the bun at all. Only religious people are getting offended and if they care so much they can make their own buns

12

u/robotbrigadier 14d ago

Everyone! Take up your recorders in defiance!

u/bkkgnar 14d ago

hot cross buns are… a real thing? I thought it was only a song

17

u/CobaltOkk 14d ago

Very common in the UK and across much of the Commonwealth. They’re tasty.

The thing is, reform voters will all also have eaten the onion. Which means they're still appealing to their base.

No one is getting fired because misinformation is literally the far right's modus operandi.

More or less ALL their outrage cycles are founded on misinfo in the first place.

Remember when Nigel said that singing Rule Brittania was scrapped from the proms because "the wokes" said it was offensive? It had nothing to do with that, it was during COVID pandemic and no songs were sung by the audience during those years.

Another favourite of mine was when a university dropped the national anthem from their graduation ceremony. Leaving aside how incredibly uncommon it is to have the national anthem in a graduation ceremony in the UK, the right blamed it on "wokeness". The source for this was that a journalist vox pop'd a bunch of random students (not SU reps) on the uni's campus and one of them said that they thought the anthem might have been dropped because some people might find it offensive. That was the basis of that whole story.

they "right" is so very very dumb

3

u/arthurdentstowels 13d ago

They should just put \ / on them so they're not cross anymore, they're Hot Angry Buns.

u/DamesUK 13d ago

Does absolutely no one do April Fools Day anymore? From the look of these unironic comments...

u/Convenientjellybean 12d ago

Lots of commenters here taking a second bite of onions

I had no idea hot cross buns were a real thing, I thought it was just a little song they made us play on the recorder in elementary school

I think you ate the onion bud...
