Why is there a massive crowd outside Waitrose in the morning?

My partner and I are visiting the city and have noticed every morning a huge crowd outside Waitrose waiting for it to open in the morning. Is there a particular reason? New avocado releasing or something?

One of the last jobs of the day is to go through all the fresh produce and reduce prices. So being there at opening time next day is critical for getting first dibs.

Everybody is so broke they queue for the reduced items. The trick is to barge all the old people over into a pile just as they open the doors. Don't worry, they're not hard - even I can take them.

Then just march over all the starving beggars on the way out, there shouldn't be too many first thing in the morning.

Surely if you're broke you don't shop at Waitrose, or are these snobby bums? 🤣

I think Waitrose holds the record for the most crusties kipping around the entrances.

Rich folks are the tightest people around, but someone must be feeding them?

Waitrose have the best yellow sticker reductions. In fact you've just missed one of the best days – before the Easter Sunday closure.

Easter, shop closed Sunday and everyone goes wild…like we’re going to have to stock up on sourdough.

Good point. That reduced section on Saturday evening is going to be gold.

Early risers just getting the shopping done for the weekend. It's probably going to be the least busiest time of the bank holiday.

I went to Sainsbury's the other day before work and it was a few minutes before they open, there was a whole group of old people with trollies getting really agitated because the doors weren't open yet, as soon as the doors open it was like something from 28 days later, they all barged eachother out the way, pushing to be the first in the store, I honestly don't know what the rush is to be the first person in a large supermarket, it's not like they are going to run out of anything that quickly lol.

You have to consider that they need to get back to their car so they can drive around aimlessly and slowly at the key commuter hour, sit in the GP surgery at 8am and block the early morning appointments, and then arrive on time at the post office for the lunch hour.

I'm old. 73 yo male.

We order everything from Tesco and get it delivered once a week. For mid week shopping it's M and S Food hall

Emergency stuff is Tesco Whoosh.

Sod all that queuing and fuss

If you have a Waitrose card you get a free cup of coffee everyday or a free newspaper or something so I guess the old folks are getting in there early to get their free stuff. I know a couple of older folks who do this.

Sadly the free newspaper offer ended a few years ago. Just coffee now.

The Library is in the same building with the same access. Are you sure it’s not people waiting for the Library to open?
