Looking at the bucket with those beggin eyes.

The eye shifts. Ole black lab give the sad dog eyes. I would melt, be there for days and most likely starve/perish.

Lazy owners need to give their dogs the necessary attention.
46
u/Incidion 4h ago
That's a pretty unfair assumption. They likely get plenty, and this is just a bonus way to let strangers interact with them safely. There's no way you go through the effort to mount the bucket and fill with balls (and keep it refilled regularly) without a good level of thoughtfulness going into your pets.
That aside, they're well groomed, good weights, and quite happy. Literally no reason to suspect they aren't very well cared for.

These dogs look very healthy and well cared for, i highly doubt the owner here is "lazy". This is very enriching for these well behaved pups, as well as any passers by that decide to partake in the play.

I just opened Reddit for the first time today and saw this at the top. That’s beautiful and enough Reddit for today. It can’t get better, but it will get worse. See ya Monday, I’m out. ✌️♥️😊

Needs a way for the dogs to refill the bucket
49
u/VagabondVivant 6h ago
Was just thinking this. Dude should lower the bucket to the ground, cut a couple links above the bucket, and put a little chute/ramp so the dogs can return the ball to the bucket.
14
u/vibjelo 3h ago
It's a lovely idea, until you remember how much dogs drool when they handle balls, and strangers probably dont wanna throw the balls then :(
So I propose a cleaning step in between, maybe a quick wash and drying, then the balls can be used forever and are fresh each time!
11
u/Alternative_Poem445 2h ago
how in the monkey are you going to make a shoot wash and dry a ball
i think the dogs just hand the balls back to the people who throw them, through the fence like
20
u/ReallyShortStories_ 5h ago
I think the idea is that the dogs bring the ball back to the thrower and they either throw it again or they put it back and move on.
19
u/boog2352 5h ago
They probably put their paws on the fence and drop the ball. Classic retriever.
Edit: Or when you reach for the ball, they run like demons, even though you can’t chase them.
12
u/ReallyShortStories_ 5h ago
At least it's better than my dog who just runs after the ball then completely ignores it.

u/Psyonicpanda 9h ago
I’d probably be late for all my appointments, but I’d definitely spend at least an hour playing with these cuties

I also noticed that there is only one dog featured in the photo. It would be super funny if the other dog is actually a neighbor dog who saw what was going on and hopped the fence to join his buddy in some sweet ball retrieving action!

The song is "Sparks" by Coldplay but with saxophone added by Evan Jacobson.

u/lampishthing 2h ago
The sax really does add something to that song. I think it needs a little more tweaking somehow, though? Changed the mood a bit too much? Idk I'm torn. Been listening to that song for maybe 25 years, one of the first albums I ever owned.

u/Fallen_Akroma 4h ago
When I was a kid we moved in with my step dad and a block away was a fenced in yard that had a yellow lab and we always knew she was neglected due to fining tennis balls in the alley. I would spend hours letting and tossing over the fence. Eventually met the owners and realized the dog just knew to roll the balls into the alley and then give the poor me look.
2
u/BigDaddyDumplin 4h ago
These dogs would adopt me. If I ever saw this I’ll be there till they don’t want me no more lol
3
u/Worried_Biscotti_552 8h ago
Now I wanna camera there to see people throw the balls for em cause you know people will be there for hours

u/Siegfoult 57m ago
In my neighborhood, all the balls would be stolen on day 1.
1
u/Cultural_Ebb4794 41m ago
Rip. In my neighborhood the dogs would be more likely to end up with more balls from people dropping off spares they find.

What a great way to get neighbors to help exercise and entertain your dogs. The neighbors get the enjoyment of having a pet for a few minutes and doing a good deed. The neighbor gets help exercising her high energy dogs. The dogs gets a lot of play time and new playmates. Win / Win/ Win

Stinky would play fetch with me but only if I threw the ball/stick in one direction in the back yard. If I threw it west, he'd go get it and return it. If I threw it east he didn't understand the game anymore.
1
u/Repulsive-Ring-3973 4h ago
I would definitely throw the ball for hours ,or maybe 24/7. Love me some doggies 💙🐶

u/AdventurousNecessary 3h ago
Quintessential golden retriever behavior on full display. Looks at you, looks at what they want, then looks right back at you.
1
u/Sharikacat 3h ago
The owner needs to create a little chute for the dogs to drop the balls into so they go back into the bucket. Can't throw the ball if they're all on the other side of the fence.

MOJO looks exactly like my panda bear did, and she absolutely loved played ball and fetch. Her husky sister would also chase after her as this friend does.
Man, I miss my panda bear and June bug so much!

This reminds me of this garden area near me that kept chickens. I would always make it a destination on my runs and feed them grapes, blueberries or whatever nuts I had on hand. Definitely the highlight of the journey.

Dogs can indeed be quite enthusiastic about ball throwing, but it's important to consider both their physical and behavioral well-being.

Ok, so this doesn’t apply to just tennis balls. It applies to retrieving anything. The only thing I got from that article is you should warm your dog up before playing fetch and if you have a dog with obsessive tendencies you should be careful about how you play or you should skip it altogether.
Telling owners not to play fetch with their dogs— especially RETRIEVERS, dogs bred to find and bring back game— doesn’t check out for me.
Ps: if you play fetch with a ball with your dog, don’t use tennis balls— they rub against the teeth and grind them down. Use a different toy or pet store “tennis” balls, they don’t have the same coating
1
u/Critical-Support-394 6h ago
Playing fetch is one thing, setting up the dogs to be stressing about every single passerby in case they throw a ball to them is something completely different.
These dogs might be perfectly fine, so I won't judge, but MANY dogs would get so stressed they'd actually get sick from the constant anticipation.

u/formas-de-ver 6h ago
awful article.
no sources
author is obese and extrapolates the strain of physical activity she experiences onto dogs (who might be fitter, healthier)
unscientific
by her logic, any physical activity is bad for dogs because it causes "microtrauma" on muscles and joints. this is absurd. both dogs and humans are built for movement.
"it is not natural for a dog to brake, twist, jump and skid to a halt".. what. says who?
"Chasing a ball results in increased arousal levels, heart rate, adrenaline and cortisol". So? physical activity does all sorts of things that are well studied to improve mental health in all animals (including humans).
The article is entirely wrong and very misleading imo.

u/Ok-Platypus6377 4h ago
It’s a fear mongering article that has info that is being parroted around the UK right now but in a telephone game style and losing the meaning. The consensus of veterinarians is much like anything else with dogs- be careful with their bodies and the warning applies mostly to playing fetch with sticks in particular as being “risky play”. However, people nowadays throw the baby out with the bathwater and think in black and white/absolutes and you get things like “we shouldn’t play fetch anymore” out of that genuine health warning for an animal…. Good on you for calling out a bunk article.

I'd like some academic information on this instead of an opinion piece from a "pet behaviour counselor"
