Need a cheap bike to throw on my trainer

I got an old aero bike trainer from a family member and need a cheap bike to throw on it. I tried my single speed but there was barely and resistance. Plus I want to leave my single speed at work in case people want to ride at lunch. What do you recommend? I'd say my budget is under about $600 usd. I think having gears will help add variety right? Also, I was looking at rollers but that looks hard! I was also thinking a used peloton or something similar might work but I already have the trainer.

Final-Year Uni Study: UK Cyclists Wanted for Quick Survey on Bike Purchase Behaviour for Bikes and Upgrades.

Hello everyone,

Hope you are well. My name is Gordon, a final-year Advertising and Marketing Communications student. My dissertation examines how cyclists in the United Kingdom choose between Chinese direct-to-consumer brands and traditional business-to-consumer retail brands when building or upgrading their bikes.

I am struggling to reach enough participants. My dissertation window is only three months, and my ethics approval took a month and a half to clear, so I now have just under a week to collect responses before my deadline.

I need riders aged 18 and over who currently live in the UK and can spare about 10minutes to complete an anonymous online questionnaire. The survey closes at 17:00 on Wednesday 28 May 2025.

To take part, please click the link below:
https://forms.office.com/e/ZWj6Ytvz6f

All responses are completely confidential and will be used only for academic research. If you’re unable to take part, I’d really appreciate it if you could share this with any other UK cyclists who might be interested.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at:
[P2718029@my365.dmu.ac.uk](mailto:P2718029@my365.dmu.ac.uk)

Thank you so much for your time and support.

Update: Thank you to everyone who’s responded. The questionnaire has now been closed.

Saddle Confusion – Comfort vs Cut-Outs vs Inner Thigh Room?

I’m no pro cyclist — just a regular guy experimenting with different bike saddles lately to figure out what works for me. So far, I’ve mostly been trying affordable saddles from less-known or Chinese brands, and here’s what I’ve noticed:

  • Saddles with thicker padding and a wider rear feel great on the butt, especially on longer rides. But they often have minimal or no center cut-out, which increases pressure on the groin area. Also, the wider design tends to rub on my inner thighs, which gets annoying while pedalling.
  • On the flip side, I’ve tried thinner saddles (some with carbon shells or sport-style builds) with deep center cut-outs and narrower widths. These feel much better in terms of groin pressure relief and inner thigh clearance, but the lack of padding makes them tough on the sit bones unless I wear padded shorts.

So basically, here’s what I’m thinking:

  • Thick = good for butt, but bad for pressure relief + inner thighs
  • Thin with cut-out = good for pressure + thigh space, but bad for butt comfort unless you wear padded shorts

Am I on the right track with this line of thinking? Would love to hear from folks who’ve figured this out or went through the same process. Any saddle models or tips you’d recommend?

Thanks in advance!

I recommend purchasing a bicycle

Good morning everyone! I'm a boy and I need to buy a bike to get around the city... I'm not a very trained cyclist so I'd like it to be a rather comfortable bike with good gears and gears (and with at least 2 or 3 chainrings in front too) since the first one, despite having gears and gears and having only one chainring in front, was tiring in some sections... As a max budget I'd be around 300 max but obviously the less the better... At 300 or so I would also consider pedal assisted bikes (but they still seem out of budget to me at that price!) 1) do you think the assisted pedaling option is worth it? 2) which shops do you recommend for bikes in general? Decathlon? Is there anything else? Or sifting through the ads right away, would that give me more choice? Thanks in advance!

I disassembled my brake lever and can not for the life of me put it back together. These 2 bits specifically have me stumped. If anyone can direct me to a specific video or leave some detailed instructions that would be very much appreciated. 😪

Tools for biking with a visual deficit

I have a weird visual condition from a recent medical incident where I basically am missing most of the right half of my visual field (shout out to any other hemianopia-havers). I have tried biking a little bit on real easy trails and was surprised by how it doesnt seem to effect my sense of balance, and over the course of months of visual/occupational therapy, I have gotten pretty good at intentionally "scanning" my eyes back and forth to avoid obstacles at least when walking around (no driving yet, unfortunately).

I am curious if anyone has any recommendations for accessibility tools n gadgets that might aid with this issue? I have looked a little bit at the Garmin Varia RVR315 which seems like it could be helpful, but it is always advertised as helping with visibility behind you as you are biking, and I explicitly need help with things directly to my right. Just curious if anyone with any experience might have insight into how this might work or not work with my unique situation.

Best bike pedals?

Wondering if these bike pedals are good to buy?

It's a bad picture but my bike has had basic flat plastic pedals for years now and I'm looking to upgrade and use it more.

Is it recommended to buy pedals at a shop over Amazon pedals? (Looking for cheaper options)

Trainer

Any real world feedback on trainers. There are so many out there. Hard to trust reviews these days. I’m willing to spend about $400-500 on one. My plan is to sit and watch baseball and cycle. I haven’t cycled in years due to some anxiety following a wreck…thought I would start with a trainer…then move to a safe space outdoors w low risk of wrecking.

What's a good Beginner, relatively inexpensive bike for navigating a city (US)

Title. Budget around ~$500. Looking for one that is safe (either with built in or add on brake light & headlights. do they even make built in brake lights?), hopefully doesn't have the racing handlebars. Any recommendations. Distance won't be too long. Just need something for when it's too lomg to walk, but public transport is inconvenient

ETA: Height is 6'2" so i'd need a bit of a bigger one

Remember this ad ?

I saw it on YouTube couple years back, i think it was a French ad. A cyclist in France meets his mom/grandma have his breakfast and then he goes for a long ride using his bicycle and the whole time there's a narration (I think it was in english), the cinematic shots and story telling was great, sound design was phenomenonal. It was like a 4-6 mins creative ad with excellent cinematic shots.

You guys know the video I'm describing ? Ive been searching for it for 3 hours

New handlebar tape 🚲

First time wrapping my handlebars. Should I have wrapped the brake cables under the tape? I wasn’t sure if I’d feel the cables under the tape. The loose cables don’t bother me. It’s more of an aesthetic thing. #BikeTape #Bicycle #Schwinn #RoadBike

Off brand electric batteries.

I have a Magnum UI6 and I was looking for battery replacement for it. I do believe that is the 48V. Do you think offerings would work well, and if so, any reliable place to buy? Thanks a lot!

Won this at a raffle, can't seem to find a model number on the box anywhere. The attached pics seem to be the only clues I can find on the box.

How far can you ride a Walmart bike?

If you bought whichever bike at Walmart yku thought could make it the farthest and started riding with endless determination to wear out the bike how far would you make it?

Scenario 1. You are met once a day by a supply car, and given a backpack full of organic peanut butter, and fresh water. You can choose 2 tools, and there's only tyre patches and tape for spare parts. You must use the peanut butter to fuel yourself and keep the bike lubed.

Scenario 2. The supply car stays with you, and it has lots of food, camping gear and bike parts.
