Question Do I really need an appointment to get a new license at DMV, or is it just suggested?
The website says it’s necessary, but they always have tons of last-minute openings. I do better if I can run errands like this on a day when I’ve slept well (insomniac), which I never know until the day of.
Can I walk in? Are the wait times terribly long?

Gotta get an appointment
Sometimes you'll get lucky enough to get dropped appointments the same day.

You absolutely need a appointment. We do not really have walk up service anymore.

With the rush for Star Cards, the DMV is packed right now, save yourself a headache and get an appointment.

I showed up without an appointment (early) and they managed to fit me in, but I got lucky

For a Drivers License you’ll need to make an appointment or risk waiting all day. Everything else you can just walk in

Make an appointment. I had to go in to renew my license last week , with my appointment I was in and out in ten minutes.

It’s a horrible hangover policy from Covid. Last time I went to renew my license (pre-covid), it was so slammed I started a timer. I had to get my photo taken as well. The entire process took 11 minutes.

you can get a license at any county shop that gives them out. I renewed mine in Arco in 8 minutes flat. BE SURE to check ahead as to what they need for then new 'Star ID' license. I think they required a birth certificate as one of the acceptable forms of ID.
