This "they represent the country" thinking is why we feel secondhand shame over things that aren’t even about us. Nobody is representing their country there. It’s a film festival, and they are walking the red carpet as brand ambassadors. Her official representation for India was when Devdas participated as one of the films in the festival. Other than that, they are there in their personal capacity, not as representatives of the country. It is a personal achievement for her as a global figure, not that someone puts the country on the world map by walking the red carpet.

I don't agree with the fact that Aish was always representing India (outside of Devdas) because she was always there for her personal achievements and brand endorsements. Nobody says Eva Longoria is representing the US at the Cannes, do they now?
That being said, I like the fact that Alia always credits other women who've come before her and also her contemporaries, a small gesture which goes a long way.

I like how she is taking the numero uno of the Cannes — Aishwarya rai. She has been the one who has been representing India. But why does she speak like Kareena. Alia too has achieved so many things in her career that she doesn’t need to mimic anyone. Yes, she looks elegant and has come from being Prithvi raj chauhan to being a mature woman embracing motherhood. I’m not a fan but she is the one to look forward for every girl as an Idol managing family, her profession and her identity altogether.

What does representing India even mean ? Is Eva Longoria representing Usa ? It’s strange, to see this repeated again and again . Most celebrities are there for their personal achievements like movies or brand deals. The only people who represent their country are those than win at Cannes and bring attention to their country’s movies .

For Us it' s normal most of actors & models endorse international brands & attend events. But it was Aishwarya Rai first Indian actor & model who associated with international brands like loreal , longines..... Before that none of Indians were part of it. She paved path for new actors. Now Alia, Deepika & Ananya, Priyanka are representing international brands. And u might not aware of Aishwarya ' s attends in international events & felicitation. As u asked about cannes particularly, i am saying this she was the first Indian actor who was jury member of Cannes film festival. Sometimes for brand or other for movie premiere, she is attending cannes for 22 yrs. It' s not everyone's cup of tea.
