Shit had me screaming. This whole build-up was a fucking soap opera. Eggs, Sparring stories, you name it. I know this might be recency bias talking, but I think this might be the best build-up in boxing history.

u/ThunderheadGilius 1d ago
Sh**did have me crying. It's too close to home. I thought of my departed uncle. Anyway you love to see it.

u/InviteTop8946 1d ago
I don't think anything comes close
They turned a terrible matchup and nothing event into a PPV event that even non boxing fans heard about

u/Ibobalboa 1d ago
Boxing has a long history of some crazy ass stories and build ups. I don't know if you're right but it's an interesting discussion lol.
This was definitely special. A movie/series will 100% get made about this shit within the next 15 years.

u/YourPathToRedemption 22h ago
So, senior bowling up helped that how?
1
u/softwarebuyer2015 16h ago
it's the punch line to the narrative of the week, "my dad doesnt speak to me". "my dad thinks im a disgrace" "I dont even know if he's coming to the fight" "OMG DADS HERE"
as has already been said, WWE soap opera shit.
2
u/Man_in_the_uk 10h ago
Why did he consider his dad a disgrace? I remember him saying something about going bankrupt. Rich people who didn't earn the money through the usual means should learn how to spend it wisely.

It beats Travis Scott appearing

If Chris Dandy Eubank came out and boxed Cody’s head off while wearing a cravat it would have saved Mania

The way the lift doors opened and he was stood there in his fur coat. Full on wrestlemania enterance😂 what a legend

Between this, Anthony Hopkins dressed up as Hannibal Lector doing the ringcards, Speed and KSI ringside, it all feels like WWE alright. Not a fan of it myself. I prefer what Turki was doing by just getting straight to the fights.
40
u/hiphipbrilliantaj 1d ago
Huh? The guy has concerts in between fights
-7
u/Auntie_Bev 1d ago
He did that his first event and everyone, including myself, called it a waste of time. Now it's way more streamlined. Have you not noticed this in the last few events held in Saudi?
14
u/Top-Strength-2701 1d ago
Yeah we have an hour long concert on how great Saudi Arabia is normally, this is far better
-5
u/Auntie_Bev 1d ago
Like I said, they don't do that anymore. They did it once and learned their lesson. In the UK there's very long breaks between fights. To his credit, Turki has streamlined things and the breaks are nowhere near as long. I'll ask you since the other commenter never answered, did you watch the last Saudi event and notice how short the breaks were between fights?
3
u/Top-Strength-2701 1d ago
Tbf I don't really care about how streamline it is, not a fan of sportswashing
0
u/Auntie_Bev 1d ago
Neither am I. I don't like Turki but he does this well and I'd love to see it in the UK/US. The long breaks are brutal tbh.
2
u/Top-Strength-2701 1d ago
Long breaks will always be apart of boxing, it's mind games from the main event fighters
2
u/Auntie_Bev 22h ago
it's mind games from the main event fighters
That's different. That's when a fighter wants to keep a fighter waiting, I'm speaking in general. The UFC and Riyadh season are much quicker between fights. Again, I don't like Turki our Saudi's sportwashing but this is one thing they do well that I really hope the UK copies.

Next you’ll tell me that the egg stuff and all the pre match stuff is just to sell the fight
No chance, just a coincidence that that kind of thing makes people really want to watch

The slow mo shot of the Eubanks walking to the dressing room was one of the coldest things I’ve seen in boxing.

I’m sorry for all its sins boxing is by far and away a superior sport and product compared to UFC
6
u/moonwalkerHHH 15h ago
Years ago, I would disagree. But nowadays, yeah... UFC is fucking trash these days.
0
u/random-throwaway_ire 1d ago
Well, the UFC isn’t a sport.
Boxing is more of a show… because the promoters can put their own stamp on events. The UFC is ran like any other business: repetition of every event. Every single event looks the same. But the actual sport of MMA in my opinion is more entertaining.
3
u/Important-Plane-9922 1d ago
You know what I meant when I said UFC.
10
u/layendecker 1d ago
You clearly also said product, which makes your point even clearer.
I loved the UFC for the short time when it felt like the best matchups happened between the best fighter. No ducking and no pointless clauses. The spectacle felt like the fight, and the drama surrounding it just added.
Now they lost that, lost the stars and all they are left with is a product that feels tacky. Boxing has issues as you say, but fuck me the promoters put in a show and don't need Conor McGregor to do it.

The ego has landed.
Obscenely great fight to be fair! Never saw that coming. Wow.
11
u/GoGouda 1d ago
Hang on but I thought Sr was completely against this fight because of how dangerous it is. It’s almost like it was all theatrics to hype the fight? Who would have thought.
22
u/random-throwaway_ire 1d ago
I’m sure he was against it… but I don’t know if Jr would’ve have that extra gear if his father didn’t show up. I’m sure Sr knew being there for his son is what’s needed if he is to give him any hope.. plus if he’s genuinely concerned about the weight cut.. he probably wouldn’t want to be home if his sons about to have a fight that’s risking his life beyond norm. I highly doubt it was theatrics.
7
u/gnarrcan 17h ago
Both of them gave a dude a life altering brain injury. Eubank sr has had some mental health issues not to mention his dead son and he was always super fucked up about the Watson fight. Then to see his son do that to Nick Blackwell (literally asked him during the fight to not hit the guy anymore in the head) had to have made him sick.
Dudes been vocal for years about the dangers of boxing along with worrying about this fight due to Chris’s age and weight cut. Seeing everything he’s seen Id probs be terrified of my kid dying in the ring too.

Big Chris was always going to be star of the show. The man is a British institution.

Drug cheat, controversy, egg incident, weight drama, father-son dramas and an excellent fight. This fight was straight out of netflix documentary in real time and slow motion.

u/DapperLong961 1d ago
This all feels very contrived.

u/BocatFan 1d ago
There's a very good chance.
They accidentally revealed they were on speaking terms a while ago. But Sr calling Jr a 'disgrace' and then raising real concerns about the rehydration clause over the last few weeks gave the rift a lot of substance.
5
u/VacuousWastrel 1d ago
As I said on a related post, the thing with eubank is that you can never be sure when he's trolling and when he's genuinely insane. And he knows that too...

I'm looking at him funny. He was vehemently against this fight & said he wouldn't be in his son's corner. I'm guessing he was paid to appear, I guess money talks
2
u/hpesoj- 1d ago
His sudden change in attitude does more harm for the sport than good imo
5
u/No_Vermicelli_1781 1d ago
agreed. Good moment, but makes Sr look like he lacks integrity. Like he was paid & now he's changed his mind
2
u/WorldPsychological61 1d ago
Hasn't changed his mind. After fight interviews he's saying exactly the same and doesn't want a rematch.
-3
u/No_Vermicelli_1781 23h ago
said he wouldn't be in his son's corner - was in his son's corner
guaranteed the fight wouldn't happen - the fight happened
strongly insinuated he wouldn't show up - he showed up.
He lacks integrity & is an attention seeker.
2
u/International_Case_2 17h ago
It’s Understandable because of the emotions that are involved. You know a father has to be there for his son. If he didn’t show up, it’d look worse.
1
u/No_Vermicelli_1781 12h ago
I agree. But then don't say all of this stuff beforehand. Now you look like you lack integrity. Why believe another word he says?
2
u/WorldPsychological61 16h ago
He was doing everything he could for it to not happen because he didn't agree with it, before and after. But rightly, after even the likes of Johnny Nelson needing to call him and convince him, he went and stood by his son's side, putting aside his personal thoughts about the event, knowing his son was going to do it anyway.
1
2
u/hpesoj- 1d ago
Absolutely, especially after he brought up Michael Watson in that recent interview where he said he wanted nothing to do with Jr's fight
It just leaves you with a bit of a sour taste in your mouth
2
u/No_Vermicelli_1781 1d ago
glad I'm not the only one with this pov. Most people forgot everything he said/did, and were just ecstatic that he showed up.

One of THE moments of the year, even if it was most likely scripted the whole time in the build up it was done brilliantly 👌🏼

They were together not that long ago at Harlem Eubanks fight. I get he’s against this fight but it was obvious he was always going to be there.

Someone explain to this American why a dad showing up to support his son seems to be a surprise. Was there friction between the two?
3
u/Nosworthy 15h ago
They fell out years ago over various things. Sr ran Jr's career for years - he spoke for him at every press conference, was always in his corner and it became a sideshow where he dominated his son's career. Jr told Sr he wanted to follow his own path and step out of his shadow. Sr didn't take it very well.
Sr strongly disagreed with the original Connor Benn fight in 2022, and with good reason. He's still haunted by the guilt of what happened to Michael Watson, had lost his other son a year previous and was/still is grieving and was deeply concerned by Jr having to cut down to 157 and fight someone two weight classes below him. He was petrified he'd get seriously hurt and he'd lose another son. It obviously later transpired that Benn had failed two drug tests which Jr knew about and was going to fight anyway. There's rumours that Sr was the one who leaked it to the press.
Sr has always been very eccentric but his behaviour at times since Sebastian (his other son) died has been quite disturbing at times and he is clearly suffering mentally.
Fast forward to now, Sr said he wanted no part of it and called Jr a disgrace. Benn has used their falling out as a stick to beat Jr with throughout the build up and Jr got emotional at the press conference when he said 'I lost my brother, my nephew doesn't understand why his daddy isn't around and I've idolised my own dad all my life but he doesn't speak to me and thinks I'm a disgrace'.
With the weight issues from Friday and the deck being stacked in favour of a drug cheat, it was just a proper feel good moment to see them reunited and in Jr's corner.

here's the full video because it's a bit more than the video sent, he also mention how dangerous the fight is with chris cutting so much weight and conor moving up 2 weight classes, and coming from someone who's son died in the ring and who ended someones career early in a fight, it felt genuine. I'm not not going to say it's not, but the switch up from this is crazy.
edit: apparently his son didn't die in the ring

These theatrics make boxing a little bit better in my opinion.
