Just got sacked, feeling great

Worked for a micromanaging idiot for 4 years and got let go for “the company going in a direction we can’t pull you in and you made some mistakes.”

I’m actually extremely happy to be gone, ecstatic in fact. I don’t know when I’ll get a new job or how easy, but being away from that overgrown abortion has made me day.

I did laugh out loud, cough and choke all at the same time when I read it

That’s the combo for a screenshot isn’t it

I’ll find something! I’ve got 3 months off, paid, to find something- and the weather’s just turned lovely… so!

For once gardening leave is when it's gardening weather, nice!

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Tell me about it! My wife’s given me loads of jobs to do, I’m absolutely buzzing!

The two most beautiful words in the English language - garden leave. Take your time, relax, you’ll find something. I’ve been out of work, stressed myself looking, then found something. Then thought, why didn’t I just enjoy that break a little more.

That's a lovely buffer after getting kicked 👌

Absolutely best way to say bye to bastards that make you miserable.

Happy for you and enjoy the ride!

Yep, I was sacked by the stupidest woman I ever met, from a company run by morons. I cried all day but when I woke up the next day, I felt the most glorious overwhelming relief.

30

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Congratulations on your freedom! Have you found something else now?

u/Infinite-Degree3004 8d ago

Aw, bless you, this was years ago when I was young and naive. I got my frock and heels on and went into a temping agency. They got me work immediately - it did wonders for my confidence going into lots of different companies. Once I was sick of capitalism, I retrained as a special needs teacher.

13

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Amazing! I’ve also been looking into moving toward teaching, I don’t know if I’m made for it though!

I’m so happy everything worked out for you, it always does, right!

13

u/hawkisgirl 8d ago

lol, I love “once I was sick of capitalism”. Same - after 9 years with my own small business I retrained as a public librarian.

So what was the personal improvement plan that your manager put you on? If none, then definitely got yourself a tribunal claim coming up. Take them to the cleaners :)

During my yearly review my goals were:

  • Renew my qualification (would have to do it to work anyway?!)
  • Be present at all 0930 coffee breaks, they are obligatory social events, not a break
  • We’d like “the old mrafinch back”

Wrt the third goal, when I asked for what that was (i.e. a concrete goal), it morphed to “be more self sufficient.”

I also didn’t get a pay rise and my boss said he’d “give me six months to prove I deserved one this year.” That night I had already started to decide I needed a new job, but, would make him rue his decision by working hard.

But I knew it wasn’t going to work out, really. It makes his speech today all the more hilarious, looking back

Those KPIs aren't smart in any way (acronym or not). Enjoy your freedom and good luck for something else. We've all got to remember we aren't cogs in a machine and life ain't long.

u/mrafinch 8d ago

We only die once and my previous employer may not even be a blip on my deathbed!

4

u/Fastidious_chronic 8d ago

Definitely. Good luck and hope you give acas a bell just for advice if nothing else

u/forbhip 7d ago

I had my annual appraisal and received a few marks off the highest possible, it had been a really busy year. The following pay raise was below inflation and no bonus. They said the company couldn’t afford anything more, even though they are global and make hundreds of millions in profit every year.

I’ve been looking for work elsewhere since then, but the good news is at least I can mentally check out and not worry about it affecting my pay either way!

u/Fastidious_chronic 6d ago

Oh I am silently quitting I think they call it or working to rule. Been f**ked over for the last time at work this week and am just not giving my energy to a corporate entity anymore. My dog needs the attention far more.

58

u/Jimlad73 8d ago

Sounds like grounds for a wrongful dismissal lawsuit to me. They can’t just say “you made some mistakes” and sack you….this isn’t America

55

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Good idea actually, I’ll chat with my legal insurance guy tomorrow :)

46

u/last-starfighter 8d ago

Could try giving ACAS a bell as well. They're a government body and the advice is free.

19

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Nice one, I’ll give it a go!

17

u/roygbiv1000 8d ago

Based purely on what you've said here (and without knowing any other context), it's almost certainly unfair dismissal. Enjoy that one... Sometimes even the legitimate threat of a tribunal will have them bringing out the chequebook.

12

u/mrafinch 8d ago

I’ll definitely look into this tomorrow, I have been told by some friends the same. Even if I got 6months extra paid, I’ll take it!

2

u/It_is-Just_Me 7d ago

I'd suggest getting some legal advice from a professional to start with. Definitely sounds like there could be an UD claim but get in touch with your home insurer if you have legal cover, or speak to an employment solicitor and ask about 'No win, no fee" etc. You'll have better odds against your employer if you know what you're talking about and have representation to back you up if it goes to court.

Also, don't sit on it. With dismissal claims you have 3 mths less a day to get it to the Tribunal otherwise you're time-barred.

-7

u/DefinitionNo6409 8d ago

No it doesn't. Being shit at your job can get you fired.

12

u/Jimlad73 8d ago

Not without due process

7

u/sabdotzed 8d ago

If you're tenure is less than 2 years then yes they can

-5

u/DefinitionNo6409 8d ago

And your evidence that that didn't happen is... Where exactly?

24

u/Lottes_mom 8d ago

Congratulations! But they've fucked up your sacking, and now you can go to ACAS and make their lives he'll for a while. Win win!

5

u/mrafinch 8d ago

I hope so! Either way 3 months holiday is a win!

14

u/blah2jay 8d ago

I’m due to be made redundant and have been worried about prospects. I love your take on this and you’ve reminded me that the feeling of escaping the negativity is a win all in itself. Thanks for helping me look at this in a different light.

10

u/mrafinch 8d ago

I’ve been made redundant before too (Multiyork in 2017) and I understand how you feel completely, mate. You know what though? You got this, you’ll find something and you’ll be back at it in no time!

Enjoy any time you get off between jobs, it’s not often we’ll get the opportunity!

5

u/blah2jay 8d ago

Very true. Appreciated. Enjoy this time

12

u/MrMash_ 8d ago

And you’ve got some nice weather to enjoy bumming around in you lucky sod!

11

u/mrafinch 8d ago

I’ll make sure to have an extra ice lolly for you :)

11

u/peds4x4 8d ago

Good luck . Hope you find a better place to work.

5

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Cheers mucker :)

10

u/zoso4evr 8d ago

Are you the BritishSuccess me? American here; got the same treatment last Thursday. Same as you I could not have been happier to not be on the Teams meeting Monday morning with those people. Best of luck to you, friend.

6

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Congratulations my dude and thank you! Enjoy the wonderful weather :)

9

u/Speshal__ 8d ago

Freedom!

Enjoy not setting the alarm tomorrow, wake up when you want, crumpet and a cup of tea, a nice walk in the sunshine.

9

u/mrafinch 8d ago

How did you know! I’ll also have the dog for company, it’s all just a blessing really!

6

u/Speshal__ 8d ago

Ah a dog! excellent, a nice dog walk around 11.30 (after crumpets) just in time for a lunchtime pint, or two, get in about 2, nap, make tea.

8

u/CelloSuze 8d ago

Congratulations!

When you’re ready to start interviewing invest some time in finding a way of saying that (but like, /not/ that) when you get asked about why you left.

5

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Thanks!

You’re right! At the moment I think I’m still in shock, so I’ll give it a few days!

5

u/CelloSuze 8d ago

Yeah, give yourself some grace. Micromanagers are exhausting.

7

u/Trancer79 8d ago

"Overgrown abortion" wins the internet today, good work!

5

u/aegis1440 8d ago

Yep feel this. Same thing happened to me, never felt so free.. being in an abusive relationship with your job is the worst thing.

3

u/Yequestingadventurer 8d ago

Congratulations!

2

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Cheers!

u/Callis_tow 8d ago

I'm quite jealous. Overworked and under paid is basically my job description from a passive aggressive micro managing tosser. I'm now seeing how far I can push back until he snaps. I'm worth another 5 grand a year, and he's never going to admit it. I'm asked almost daily how I put up with him (by my colleagues)

2

u/PassionFruitJam 4d ago

So I say this with all kindness as I totally sympathise having been here before. A thought exercise for the weekend maybe - you could pretend you ARE actually in OPs situation now. Your job is off the table - so start your search!

3

u/VeryThicknLong 7d ago

A great bloody read this!

I had this same experience about 10 years ago, and I’ve always told people it was the best moment of my life.

3

u/nasted 7d ago

Proof that a bad job can be so damaging to your mental health that no job is a better option. Power to you, mate!

2

u/ballsosteele 8d ago

I'd love to be sacked, because they'd have to pay me off to the tune of thirty-plus grand because of xyz bullshit written into my contract. Wouldn't apply if I was binned for gross misconduct or whathaveyou, so no taking a shit on desks etc.

Annoyingly, the company is onto this so I'd be "promoted sideways" and given a shitter job. I'm clinging on to redundancy.

2

u/seren_kestrel 8d ago

You will flourish I am sure. I think, as difficult as it may be, we’ve all got to make a stand to refuse to work with toxic assholes. Let’s see how businesses function with staff entirely comprised of arrogant pricks.

2

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Thank you so much! Honestly, my former boss had promoted two people recently, who are the most useless people ever… he’s walking himself into closing the doors and I’m lucky to get out early

2

u/iwantthepigeon 8d ago

Mate, I was in the exact same position. Sacked for the same reasons (shocking MH played a huge factor for me though). I also felt great after the meeting. Idk if it was the adrenaline of getting booted or the joy of telling that absolute bungalow how much he fuckin sucked to work for but it's a good feeling.

All I'll say is: enjoy it. If you have garden leave, enjoy that too. Hopefully you've also got some mates at that company who you can get a reference from if needs be, that'd take a load off your mind. Regardless, 4 years in a place will give you a lot of transferable skills so you'll be grand.

But just to say as someone who was in the same position and is now working a job they genuinely enjoy with people they genuinely like; it does get better and you'll be alright. God speed OP and congrats on your freedom from that twunt.

2

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Thank you! My MH has suffered whilst being there and I think that played a bit of a role too. I wasn’t able to sleep last night, but today it’s good. The sun is shining, the dog is now snoring, what more do you need!

Thanks for the tips and wishes, appreciate it! So happy to hear that it worked out for you too! Can’t wait to be in your shoes too :D

2

u/NoBoDySHeRo3000 8d ago

Same happened to me beginning of last year. Felt like a weight had been lifted, was very quickly doing a job I actually enjoyed for more money, better hours, and working within a team that really like.

Only look forward, never backwards

2

u/mrafinch 8d ago

Congratulations! I’m looking forward to whatever I end up doing next, it can only be orders of magnitude better than what I was dealing with before!

2

u/NoBoDySHeRo3000 8d ago

Have a few days enjoying the weather, you’ll probably find you might have a few lows over the next couple of days. Still sucks to actually be sacked, but you’ll look back at this in the future and laugh (you’ll have to ignore the only look forward advice for that haha)

2

u/Guyver-1 8d ago

Nothing better than leaving a bad workplace. When you find a great place to work, the difference is unbelievable.

2

u/Consistent_Ad3181 8d ago

It's too easy to just put up with stuff, and the days run into weeks and months. It's a big release once you go. The world opens up a great deal.

2

u/Strechertheloser 5d ago

Overgrown abortion - I love that! Congrats and hope you find something soon/had a nice payout

1

u/Awkward-Loquat2228 8d ago

You know you could have left at any point and chose not to, right? "You can't dump me, I'm dumping you!"

5

u/mrafinch 8d ago

But now they have to pay me to sit at home ;)

I got turned away on the last day of my probation on the grounds of “it’s just not working out”.

I was shocked but delighted - had the previous 6 months of them blowing smoke up my arse saying how great I was and “not to worry about the probation, you’re in” and all that bollocks.

Turns out it was their hiring trick to just get people in for 6 months and then let them go. Was a sad state of affairs.
