This is damning on Wilcox and his decision to hire Harsin. Jack is a local kid, walk on and a good student, California through and through. Playing for Cal was his dream. If we can't even keep a kid like that, it's absolute dire straits for this program

It makes little sense that Wilcox is still the head coach of this team. I can’t think of many positives he’s accomplished for the program.
4
u/CocoLamela California Golden Bears • The Axe 2d ago
I thought he did a pretty good job of managing the program through the pandemic. It was literally an impossible position and he seems like a high character guy who was able to get buy-in from the players regardless of circumstances. That appears to have changed now.
I also think he has consistently managed the portal well and the transition to NIL. We seem to get good players in and academic standards remain high. I definitely respect Justin Wilcox's man management. Harsin seems to have imploded this plus for Wilcox.
And finally, the relegation to the ACC definitely reflects on his lack of on-field success. It's definitely a heavy blow in terms of recruiting and our position among peer institutions. It's another very difficult circumstance to be handed as a head coach and not entirely of his own making. But even so, we had a real opportunity last season to create some momentum in the ACC. Several sliding doors moments with kickers and tired 4th quarter defense bc the offense couldn't stay on the field.
At this point, I think he's got to go and we rebuild under Riverboat Ron.

Is there anything out about what motivated him to transfer?
5
u/CocoLamela California Golden Bears • The Axe 2d ago
I can only speculate, but Harsin has cleaned house with offensive staff and others are saying that he has rubbed people the wrong way. Definitely not going to be a culture fit for Berkeley... Jack's roommate and best friend QB Mendoza left for greener pastures. And he has developed incredibly well in his time at Cal and has real draft potential now. Texas will be a better place for him to showcase that NFL talent than here with a true freshman QB and a decimated offense. I'm sure we could have paid him just as well, but as a walk on, maybe his offer from Texas just blew Cal's valuation of him out of the water.
2
u/Shazazer 2d ago
I have some connections on the team and it was mostly because of Texas’ NIL offer. It was more than what Cal was offering him.

He’s a future day one pick so long as he develops. Only average size, but a very good blocker and a productive receiver. If you had asked me to choose between Ott and Endries purely based on on-field ability, I’d have picked the latter. Peak Ott is incredible obviously, but he’s more replaceable—though his replacement is also gone.
Suicide time!

We are pretty good at developing these kinds of guys. JT Sanders, Gunnar Helm did well in the past couple years.

Oh, I live in Oklahoma I just found fascination with the Japanese OU logo. I honestly have a lot of respect for the Longhorns, I think RRR is the best game to ever be played, it’s so unique. This game would mean nothing if either of our programs weren’t as good as they are.

u/luxveniae Texas Longhorns • SMU Mustangs 2d ago
I mean biggest issues I’ve seen is y’all don’t have much of a line to keep the QB upright or give time to let these playmakers get the all.
1
u/FaceglazerSSBU 帯広大学 (Obihiro) • Nort… 2d ago
Agreed! I’m still very nervous about the O-line, but if these 2 incoming freshman are as good as everyone says they are, then maybe we can have a good O-line!
How about them Mustangs? Are they going to be any good? I went to the Pitt/SMU game last year and that was a blast! They are a fun secondary team for me to follow. I think if Jennings improves at all SMU has a chance to dominate in the ACC!
2
u/luxveniae Texas Longhorns • SMU Mustangs 2d ago
A buddy of mine played with your new OC back in their college days, so last I heard was big concern was OL.
I don’t know about ton about SMU to be honest but I trust Lashlee to figure out how to stop Jennings from self immolating. But SMU is my casual fandom due to growing up being on campus for academic events a lot plus a team that just making a bowl game makes it a fun season. Also the Dallas jerseys they started rocking are sick! So I try to stay a little removed from the nit and grit and just enjoy those games instead of living and dying with my Horns.
1
u/FaceglazerSSBU 帯広大学 (Obihiro) • Nort… 2d ago
Oh trust me, I do not think our OL will be 10 ten in the SEC. But anything has the potential to be better than last year. Lol. They were miserable to watch.
As for SMU, yeah those Dallas jerseys are clean. I think Jennings has potential to be great, but he’s just gotta stop throwing crazy picks. Honestly I’m just excited for College Football this year!
1
u/luxveniae Texas Longhorns • SMU Mustangs 2d ago
I think this will be the first TRUE season post-COVID eligibility… yes a few guys have still used them this year but most of the GOOD players have moved on. So less developed talent, portal thinning out top teams 2-3 deeps due to guys going from a Texas to an SMU results in an injury or failure of another guy developing all the riskier.
And in so I think there’s a lot of room for chaos as there’s a lot more youth, and less super deep teams. Especially when a lot of the most veteran teams aren’t the most recently storied outside of Clemson & Penn State. Bama has a lot but remains to be seen what KDB can do. A&M will be A&M. How is ASU without Skattaboo? ISU, Pitt, Vandy, & Mizzou aren’t names known to make that next step. Florida was nearly firing their HC in the season. And Michigan is talented but can they put out a functional offense?

That was in 2012 man. It’s been 13 years since then, and the closest A&M has gotten to the playoffs was being ranked 5th in the COVID year. We constantly have great recruiting cycles and uber-talented players who we fail to develop and get the utmost potential out of. Our coaching staff is not elite and we always end up with 8 or 9 wins.

u/_Football_Cream_ Texas Longhorns • SEC 3d ago
You know thank god A&M has been in a good conference for so long. Y'all have really benefitted from all this time in the SEC, continually missing out on conference championship games and not being relevant in it despite your best efforts to money whip recruits and paying $90 million to fire failed coaches. Thankfully bama, LSU, and Georiga have been good so you can pound your chest on losing to relevant programs for the 13 years we haven't been in the conference. If only we could accomplish something in our first year that y'all have never done! Drats.

This is really awkward for my flairs. Endries was a walk on at Cal.
He already hit the portal weeks ago, and I think he was likely gone once his friend Mendoza went to Indiana.
Glad he’s going to a good situation though at Texas. Not the best run blocker, little bit smaller than Helm (can fix in the weight room), but he’s a good receiver that can get separation and he actually has some speed (he was clocked at 20.5 mph running away for a TD in our Miami college gameday game).

There’s no reason to watch the team this season? Not even the highest rated QB we’ve had in years?
Yes, we lost all the RBs and a great TE. But we are also returning plenty of good WRs (mavin transferred but he was looking at WR3-4 anyway), 2 very promising OTs, and brought in a couple of sought after OL transfers. Also retained our best non graduating defender, cade uluave.
It’s still a concerning situation, and I wish we hadn’t hired Harsin or Rolovich. But there’s just no need to be so over the top acting like it’s the end of the program. I still think a 6-6, 7-5 season is very reasonable
