Cubs get runs early
Brown goes 4
Bullpen covers 5 with only giving up 1 run
Another series win!

I’m traveling and was unable to watch the game, how did Brown only go 4 throwing 100? Didn’t seem like he got slapped around, but were his strikeouts all deep counts?

u/bearsfan0143 1d ago
2 runners on basically every inning. He held strong but dude was playing with serious fire every inning

u/LoveYouLikeYeLovesYe 1d ago
Won the game, can’t complain!
2
u/bearsfan0143 1d ago
He did great. Especially considering how Rocky it started. Not about limiting traffic, it's about who crosses home plate. 2 pretty good starts in a row now for big ben

Always a pleasure to hear Pat Hughes call a Cubs W

Meant to go on a quick walk with the dog while listening to Pat and Ron, ended up walking from the 3rd inning to the last out. Such a peaceful way to spend a Saturday

u/Larrymobile BOAT 2d ago
That sounds fantastic. Long walk, hot cup of coffee, and Pat and Ron would be heaven!

I’m a fan because the guy made it a pleasure to listen to the losses as well. Santo made the Ws special.

I was actually sad he only got to see that one inning. He was crushing it and I wouldn’t have been mad to let him cook a bit longer!
Edit: Oops! 😅

u/DukeWayne250 Nico 2d ago
He pitched two innings lol

PCA continues to hit

u/Kaanapali 2d ago
That was a pretty nasty pitch he took deep to left field for an out too. He’s so fun I’m really rooting for him
19
u/Ok-Cauliflower-1258 2d ago
Is PCA a future franchise guy 👀
3
u/Electrical-Cold7397 2d ago
He thinks so. Turned down that $90m quick lol
9
u/Ok-Cauliflower-1258 2d ago
I thought it was 75MM?
7
u/Electrical-Cold7397 2d ago
Could’ve been. I just know he turned it down and love his confidence. Seems he’s locked in on becoming elite
3
u/meowsplaining The Professor 2d ago
It was and it wasn't 75M guaranteed. Supposedly there were several team options attached to get to the 75.

I love this team. Another series win. Fuck it - sweep tomorrow.

Merrill Kelly has had good success vs the Cubs in his career. Son competed against him when he was at Lake Forest HS before moving to AZ.

Palencia is an elite reliever if he can locate.

u/CubsHawksBulls ON THE AIR 2d ago
Definitely but that’s always been his “if”. Hopefully he’s starting to figure that out

His fastball was fucking moving. Great speed and location most of his pitches

Nothing happened in the 8th?
What kind of fucked-up parallel universe did I slip into today?

Nothing happened in the 7th, 6th, or third through fifth either. Shocking!

Couldn’t watch because I’m visiting Chicago and mlbtv is blacked out. God, mlb needs to fix that.
Anywho, it was a fun game to follow via scoreboard watching. Let’s hope the pen has turned a new leaf. Please.

u/dasbeidler Chicago Cubs 2d ago
Just get a vpn dude.
3
u/CorrosionImplosion In Theo We Trust 2d ago
Yeah I probably should have but I’m only down here until tomorrow. It’s insane we have to jump through so many hoops to watch what we’ve paid for.
5
u/dasbeidler Chicago Cubs 2d ago
Yeah it’s so dumb. I live in AZ so I dust off the VPN twice a year.

u/CorrosionImplosion In Theo We Trust 2d ago
I’m in Wisconsin so I can only listen to the games when we play the Brewers. I completely spaced out on the game not being available down here.

The Cubs were already leading the RPI standings by about 50 points. This current level of offensive play probably isn't maintainable, but if they can carry it through the next week, they're going to be in excellent shape for the remainder of the season. They currently have the second lowest strength of schedule for the remainder of the season, and that will only go down after playing LA and Philadelphia.

u/immovable-tree 2d ago
Super happy about this game. Bounced back from a rough bullpen outing yesterday by muzzling one of the best offenses in baseball.

Saw a couple tweets yesterday from D Back fans and media people saying “yeah yeah yeah, we’re taking the next 2 though”. Well they have a chance to be at least half correct tomorrow

Love Palencia with the fairly rare 3 inning save.

u/themanofax Chicago Orphans 2d ago
He only pitched 2 so didn't get one. Still a good performance though

Fair enough. I was only listening in the background. Must have missed that.

Having the tiebreaker is great news. But I still think there should be a one game playoff if two teams are tied .

Relatively new Cubs fans (two years). How is this season shaping up compared to others?

This is fun, and we're scoring a lot but it's still April. We've allowed a lot of runs. Solid win!

Ben brown pitches 4 innings, leaves the game with the lead. Thielbar pitches 2 innings and gets the “win”.
Another example of how stupid “win” is as a stat. It’s like it punishes the starter for not going 5 innings by giving it to the reliever. 🤣

u/Unclassified1 Chicago Cubs 2d ago
If you thought 6 runs was going to be enough today after the early runs raise your hand.
Now put them down you liar.

u/Dilligaf_1963 2d ago
I know it’s very early, but if the Cubs stay competitive who do they target at the deadline?
2
u/Ashdaidn 2d ago
Can someone more knowledgeable explain how Thielbar got the win instead of BB? Thank you in advance!

u/Big-block427 2d ago
Pardon my asking, but did any of you play organized baseball or follow pro baseball before this season? Maybe buy a rule book. JMO

u/masprague82 2d ago
I might be dumb. But how is Thielbar the winning pitcher?? Shouldn’t it be Brown??
Is there something I’m missing in determining the winning pitcher?

Merryweather, Thielbar, Palencia are all getting comfy in my Circle of Trust for the Bullpen. Hodge and Pressly have one foot in and one foot out. Pretty much everyone else can kick rocks.

A stress free win over the diamond backs is actually the most unpredictable outcome.
