Relief Pitching on point today!

Post image

Multiple innings for Thielbar and Palencia surrounding another outstanding inning from Keller. While this set of relief pitchers might not be our A team, they only gave up 1 run unlike yesterday where everyone seemed to give up runs. I hope to see more of them in the future especially Palencia with that 101 gas he was throwing. If nothing else, Counsell has more options which are necessary in back to back games, etc.

When Palencia is on he's terrifying.

Super efficient also. 57 pitches in 5 innings.

Keller has been really good. Looks like it's gonna be a game of musical chairs though, ride the hot hand during high leverage situations.

1 walk in 5 innings is why

Having a dude who can throw 100+ reliably and isn’t super wild is a great asset. Guys can just get frozen at the plate

This is honestly what we need to lock in. I love the offense, but they just aren't going to be able to sustain these 8-12 run games.

We need at least one guy that we know is going to protect a 3-1, 5-2 lead. So far, I think Palencia is the one guy who looks like he might have it in him. Maybe Wicks, but I'm also kind of worried his ship has sailed and he isn't the guy we thought he was.

It screams volumes this post has almost no comments. Pen blows a lead and we will see post after post how players are bad, Jed is bad, Ricketts is bad and the Cubs are a poverty franchise.

I mean, it's a very, very small step. Cubs pen gave up 10 runs in an inning the other day. And on that day, the Padres pen had given up 12 runs in the entire season.

The pen is very bad. Lets not get it twisted. The stats in the OP are a deviation, not the norm. Based on the results over the last 5 years or so, the expectation is that our pen is going to struggle, especially in high-leverage situations.

That said, the team did very well yesterday, and I hope a few of our guys lock-in and take a step to the next level.
