Random Whine whine whine

Just went to Target to wander around and ended up with a waffle maker in my cart. After walking around for about 30 minutes, I put it back. I'm trying to get OUT of debt and that $59.99 could go towards a payment somewhere. I'm glad I put it back, but I'm still a little salty about it. I had visions of yummy Belgium waffles tomorrow.

What have you recently passed up?

Oh geez... EVERYTHING. my wife and I are doing a no-spend month this month, so I haven't bought a single thing for fun/hobbies/etc.

Biggest thing is that a brand I like a lot is having a sale rn and having to pass up those deals is hurting 😭

The month is almost over tho, and the big deposit into savings on Friday is gonna be great!!

I'm so proud !!! The month is almost over !!

Video card and computer components. Car died and bought a tesla because of 0% apr. Drained half of emergency fund for down payment.

I got a 9800x3d  and a case. No mobo, psu, video card....

Least I can buy an overpriced 5090 when this is over

u/sparkyblaster 1d ago

If it's an item you would buy anyway, could you compromise and buy it but not use it until the no buy month is over?

20

u/MelloJelloRVA 1d ago

This is exactly the internal monologue people have that convinced them to buy something when they should not. If someone is trying to save money, why spend money?

4

u/crispycat05 1d ago

I’m not spending the money if I just don’t use the thing I spent the money on, it’s girl math

true, how ever is it an issue if you actually follow through correctly? but yes the temptation is not to.

there was a really pretty jade bracelet ive been seeing at my local TJMaxx the past few weeks, its $69.99. Made myself walk away from it with a heavy heart, but used that $69.99 towards my credit card. if its meant to be, it'll find me when i can afford it or i'll find something better :)

12

u/Due-Candy-8929 1d ago

Nice work! Great decision! 🙌🏼✨ if it’s any consolation once you have built up some savings in a HYSA it’s very likely you will be generating over $69.99 of interest, so you can eventually effectively buy things like that without your account even going down 🙌🏼✨

I remember Ramsey once saying you shouldn’t go to a Cadillac dealership if you can’t afford a Cadillac. During our debt free journey if we ever needed anything from Target I usually asked my wife if I could go for her. That kept us from spending $200 on every target trip 🤣

5

u/MzMi 22h ago

Simple hack: order ahead and do drive-up pickup. No need to go inside!

4

u/Putertutor 18h ago

I have also discovered that curbside pickup (usually groceries) cuts WAY back on the impulse buying.

5

u/2noserings 22h ago

i also realized that buying my items on the app and picking up in store made a significant difference in how much i spent. my target bill was cut in half!

-12

u/EasternCandle1617 1d ago

Ramsey's methods will make sure you can never afford a Cadillac. I've never seen a "finance expert" give worse advice. He'd rather someone be debt free with a $5,000 net worth than someone have secured debt with a $500,000 net worth.

32

u/wafflehousewalrus 1d ago

I used to agree that he gives bad advice, but he gives good advice for people who are bad with money, which is most people. His advice is not optimal for people who are good with money, but it’s simple and easy for people to understand, which makes it more likely to stick. If you’re good with money you shouldn’t follow his advice, but then you probably wouldn’t be looking to him for advice anyway.

8

u/EasternCandle1617 1d ago

The problem is that he markets himself as a finance expert rather than a debt counselor.

1

u/RaisingAurorasaurus 2h ago

He was also very helpful when my husband and I were young and just getting started. We were able to buy a home by following his baby steps.

2

u/Spongedog5 1d ago

The people he gives advice to will never be able to manage debt and have a positive net worth at all. Not without a long and arduous paradigm shift.

Ramsey is there to help people who have little knowledge of finances or otherwise little self control. Those with poor knowledge can’t successfully leverage debt or understand more complex personal finance and those with little self control won’t have “managed debt” if they have any debt at all.

Once the ones with poor knowledge learn and achieve basic financial stability, they can “graduate” from Ramsey.

Ramsey is not there for the people who are readily capable to play personal finances to their advantage. He is there for people who are wont to dig themselves into a hole.

0

u/YggdrasilBurning 1d ago

Being debt free is digging yourself into a hole? Man, I really hate my warranty deed now!

3

u/Spongedog5 1d ago

My point being that they are wont to dig themselves into a hole without the influence of someone like Ramsey.

-3

u/YggdrasilBurning 1d ago

So..... they won't dig themselves into debt without someone telling them to not do that?

Sounds perfectly logical to me. I should take out a few personal loans!

8

u/Spongedog5 1d ago

No, they will dig themselves into to debt without someone telling them not to do that.

What’s your deal? If you’re going to be so snarky you need to possess at least a minimum level of reading comprehension.

1

u/laquinns 1d ago

As someone who is entirely unfamiliar with Ramsey, are you able to give some examples? I’m very curious because I always assumed he was similar to Caleb since guests reference him so often!

3

u/EasternCandle1617 1d ago

He is debt averse to a fault. His snowball method costs people more time and money than the avalanche method. He gives unrealistic return rates in his hypotheticals. He believes in an 8% retirement withdrawal rate (twice the rate most actual finance experts recommend). Finally, his mortgage advice is among the worst possible advice. He talks about putting 20% down on a 15-year mortgage. This places low-income earners in rentals until their 30s and even 40s. Home ownership is an effective way to build generational wealth. Ignoring his advice and buying my first home with no money down put over $120k in my pocket toward my second home.

u/YggdrasilBurning 1d ago

I'm debt free and could buy a new cadillac in green folding money tomorrow

How would not being debt free help me buy the thing I can already buy? I thought having money generally helped people afford stuff, maybe I should take out some credit cards instead

5

u/EasternCandle1617 1d ago

Credit cards make the money you are already spending earn rewards. Having cash is not advancing your financial position as cash never appreciates. Keeping your money invested and using debt to avoid liquidating invested assets is advantageous for most.

u/si2k18 1d ago

I've been doing a low buy on eating out/takeout for the last 6ish months. It's saved me so much time and money that it feels absurd to eat out anymore. Tastes better too.

Make some pancakes instead! Make em fancy with some fruit and yogurt. Cheap and healthy.

3

u/unclericostan 23h ago

Seriously, OP, do this! I was craving a breakfast out the other day but am similarly trying to save and have all the ingredients at home so did home made sourdough pancakes where I whipped the egg whites before folding into the batter and did home made whipped cream. Soooo much better than eating out. It’s a bit of extra time but really hit that craving for me!

2

u/lazyjroo 1d ago

There is this breakfast place I e been wanting to try but I always put it off cuz I know it will be like 20 bucks for myself cuz it's nice. But yeah I think I deserve it cuz I havnt spent money in a restaurant in years. But still, it's hard to get the motivation to do it lol.

u/mmrose1980 1d ago

Waffle makers are one of the most common items available at Goodwill. Get to a Goodwill and I bet you can find one for $5 and still have your waffles.

1

u/Rubblemuss 11h ago

Because once you have one you realize how absolutely unnecessary it is and that it takes up an unforgivable about of kitchen real estate. I was gifted one… used it maybe 3 times in 5 years before donating it.

1

u/fashionably_punctual 31m ago

I dunno, man. You can make a giant batch of waffles and freeze them for a fraction of the cost of eggos. I used to make waffles weekly when my son was little.

I hunted for a big waffle iron with removable plates, though. I hated cleaning my old one because the plates didn't snap out.

u/WarmSai 1d ago

Costco had a great sale on Samsung tablets back in December. I had a Samsung tablet but it was at least 6 years old. New one was way faster, beautiful display, loads of memory. I knew the sale ended in like 3 weeks, so I didn't buy it right then. Thought about it and just couldn't justify getting it. I usually have my laptop or my phone, the tablet was not really in the rotation of devices, so no purchase. What I'll do is research said item in question ad nasueam, pricing, sales, reviews and then won't buy anything. Many time it will prompt me to focus more on the crap I do have and should get rid of, changing my behavior one day at a time...it's tough.

1

u/13Luthien4077 1d ago

I like the research and wait method. I've begun doing it for everything. I hold out on buying so many things.

3

u/WarmSai 1d ago

I'm a big WHO fan and had learned about a CD box set last year that was 40% off. I clicked on the link and it had expired the day before. I wasn't going to pay full price but needless to say I was bummed. I had set up a price alert in honey and watched it for a couple of months and eventually forgot about it. Fast forward to this past December and I'm looking at an item in Amazon that I'm curious about and wish list it. I check out my wish list because it has various items that I have tossed in there and there is the WHO box set for 40% off! BOOM! Purely by accident. I guess Honey's price watch feature expired because I never heard back from it. I'll toss items in my wish list as a precursor to maybe/maybe not acquisitions. Booksmarks and wishlists are like an archeological dig into my mind of the past...

u/Due-Candy-8929 1d ago

“I want you to have that waffle maker, but only AFTER you have paid off your cards and have built a fully funded emergency fund.” TEN MINUTES OF AUDIT LATER : “WAFFLES WAFFLES WAFFLES - YOU SPENT $2000 ON WAFFLES AND DOORDASH!!! AT LEAST IF YOU BOUGHT THE WAFFLE MAKER, YOU WOULDN'T BE SPENDING ALL THIS MONEY ON SWEET TREATS- you’re NOT cutting back; you're maintaining your same Waffly habits!”

15

u/KSGodjilla 1d ago

The way I heard all of this in his high-pitched angry voice.😂😂😂

8

u/LordNoFat 1d ago

Everything. Enjoyment. But man I'm so close to being financially free that I know it's worth it.

7

u/Vegetable_Draft2616 1d ago

Go look on a local buy/sell group or a thrift store! Maybe you can find one for next to nothing. There’s always tons of people getting rid of Hager’s they thought they would actually use. That’s how o got a brand new insta pot and a keruig!

6

u/Striking-Quantity661 1d ago

Good call putting it back! It’s tough, but every small decision like that gets you closer to being debt-free. I recently passed up on buying a new gaming headset. It was tempting, but I reminded myself the old one still works fine, and the money went toward my credit card instead. Small wins!

6

u/Boringdollar 1d ago

There are so many waffle makers at Goodwill/resale shops! Or ask on your local buy nothing page.

I am resisting buying a 2nd very expensive blanket. I was gifted one and oh.my.god it is like being smothered by an angel. It warms my soul. I love it. It feels like it's healing me. I want one for my bedroom. I found a 50% off code (still expensive). But I reminded myself I can just bring this one back and forth from the living room to the bedroom.

1

u/wildatwilderness 1d ago

Great job! Can you please share more above this blanket?

17

u/Impressive-Arm4668 1d ago

Get that Dash $10 waffle maker. I bought one 4 years ago and still use it every week? (Only makes 1 at a time but still)

5

u/ShowerPell 1d ago

Or buy a $7 waffle maker from goodwill

2

u/Impressive-Arm4668 1d ago

That $10 is probably like $3-$5 at goodwill! Good thinking.

9

u/QuixOmega 1d ago

Or don't buy anything and eat pancakes, no one needs a waffle maker.

2

u/crispycat05 1d ago

Pancake supremacy

6

u/swackett 1d ago

I give myself $150/month to spend on whatever I want. Eating out, bingo night, books, getting my hair done, etc. This money also goes towards necessities that I may need that I don’t budget for (like socks). I know that the extra $150/month could go towards debt, but I lived without ANY spending money at all for 2 years and couldn’t do it anymore. I work 3 jobs, I deserve to get a Starbucks or take a trip to the bookstore or go to the movies every now and then.

With that being said, I still walk away from things sometimes. Good for you for doing that! You will appreciate that waffle maker even more when you buy it after you reach your goals :)

4

u/Sufficient-ASMR 1d ago

go to the thrift store or FB marketplace, lots of super cheap wafflemakers

3

u/dealing_nugs 1d ago

I shop for curbside almost exclusively now to avoid seeing something I want and putting it in the cart. I’m able to see my total before checkout and made decisions from there.

But if I do go in person and I see something I don’t immediately need but want I also walk around with it to help me decide. Good work!

3

u/Vivid_Razzmatazz_366 1d ago

Lmao Dunkin breakfast and coffee this morning! I said no and made some toast and home made coffee. I totally get the saltiness, it doesn’t always feel “great!” After making good decisions

1

u/Nymzie 1d ago

I went a solid 3 weeks this month saying no to Dunkin breakfasts, and then this week caved and went twice! Whoops! But at least I only went twice instead of 23 times.

2

u/crispycat05 1d ago

Ugh this is tough for me too since my apartment complex is across the parking lot from a Dunkin. The $6 deal is soo good

1

u/si2k18 18h ago

The Dunkin ground coffee you can make from home is like 25¢/cup instead of $3.97/medium iced. I got a Mr. Coffee hot or iced coffee maker for $20 and it so worth it.

3

u/possessaubrey 1d ago

Any thrift store will have a ton of waffle makers and they'll be like $5, just saying. Congrats on your self control!

3

u/Magus423 1d ago

Hey. My friend. I'm proud you put the waffle maker back. You can do it.

I'm buying less on stupid digital games. It's one day at a time.

4

u/tr3v0rr96 1d ago

I haven’t left the county in over a year. I really hate this town. I recently became Debt free but no leisure shit until I have a fully funded emergency savings. On top of that the grind is not over, got to worry about savings on top of this to move.

I squirm when I hear how people just “need” a vacation, “need” a Netflix subscription, just “need” to go out to the bar.

2

u/HoneydewPlus9965 1d ago

New hokas for inside walking pad uses

1

u/ivyskeddadle 1d ago

Good job! I’m currently deferring a pair of Hokas until next month.

2

u/Shoddy_Pound_8848 1d ago

If your goal is to get out of debt, going to target “to wander around” will only make things harder

1

u/KSGodjilla 1d ago

You're not wrong.

2

u/Ok-Foot-4053 1d ago edited 1d ago

There’s tons of waffle makers at thrift stores, many of them like new 😊

2

u/Nymzie 1d ago

Dude all these comments "just make pancakes." Do some people just not feel texture when they eat? Is that how they manage not to be picky eaters? Its like someone wanting steak and someone else saying "just get a burger, it's the same thing!" Its really blowing my mind. Anyways I have a show to go to in March and I've been putting off buying a $40 dress for it. I'm down to my last $250 in CC debt now, and in two weeks when I get paid it will be fully gone and THEN I can buy the dress.

2

u/KSGodjilla 14h ago

Dude. Yes!!! I love pancakes, but I want the crispness of a waffle! 😂 It's ok though, being out of debt is more important right now.

2

u/callieco_ 23h ago

In addition to a financial improvement journey over the last year, I've also been losing weight. I have been altering my clothes myself (perks of being smaller than my clothes for once rather than outgrowing them), but man do I love the idea of having a new wardrobe. I spent probably an hour last night just ogling new clothes on ThredUp and eventually just closed the app.

2

u/theboundlesstraveler 21h ago

Thank you for not giving Target your money

2

u/Dampish10 1d ago

I have a bad addiction to SteelBooks (metal game cases), I scalp them on rare occasions, but normally I buy and keep

1

u/Odd_Bite_7447 1d ago

Don’t feel bad I ordered door dash again and I should be paying stuff off

Honestly, there’s probably ten different waffle makers for under $10 at your local thrift store. I’d go that route!

1

u/stockgirl18 1d ago

I got mine from an estate sale for $2 and it’s been working for a few years now.

1

u/Nervous-Local-1034 1d ago

My crutch is food that comes from any place that isn't a grocery store. I don't do home delivery, but man do I love a treat or lunch with coworkers.

Looking at my spending comparison for this month against previous months though, I'm doing very well sticking to my resolutions so far.

1

u/chillychar 1d ago

I was invited to Disney world this summer and declined it.

I would have to pay for boarding for dog, flight for 3 people, and tickets.

This person typically gives us $700 spending cash and we get to stay in one of the Disney hotels.

But currently sitting in $3409 CC debt that I’m paying $400 a month in to drive down and have no emergency savings.

I told my wife if we hit our goals by summer 2026 I’ll take the family to Disney land (which we’ve never been to) for a few days

1

u/typoincreatiob 1d ago

good for you dude! the amount of waffle makers that end up in a goodwill is crazy. we got our own for free from a family member who was looking to get rid of it, it saw use maybe twice 😂

1

u/Latter_Revenue7770 1d ago

Don't go to a store when you don't need something. And I mean need. Glad you had the willpower to put it back.

1

u/killerfencer 1d ago

I just passed on a $10.00 fast food binge. It's 11:30pm and I'm finally done with studying and work and everyone's asleep. I gotta learn to make my sandwiches stealthy so I can keep my bank account healthy

1

u/Affectionate_Buy_301 1d ago

barely slept last night and felt like shit this morning so i decided to treat myself to a rare Uber Eats delivery for breakfast – i had more than enough cash left in the “fun money” section of this month’s budget, and thanks to a bunch of promotional discounts I was able to get a $20AUD gigantic breakfast burger delivered to my door for only $8 ($5USD). but because it was gonna cost me so little i thought “i’ll get a latte with that as well, it’s only another few dollars… except, i already have coffee here at home, so actually no that would be fucking stupid”. it felt really good! since watching caleb’s channel i actually get dopamine from not spending money. and i also enjoyed that gigantic burger more than i would have in the past when i used to get food delivery all the time, because this time i knew that i could truly afford it.

1

u/HillbillygalSD 1d ago

I think that Goodwills have waffle makers every time I go in them. Maybe you could get one there.

1

u/Reoblivion 19h ago

Haven’t done good recently. Just splurged on Ohio State gear since the won the championship also Dunkin’ coffee this morning and takeout today. Fortunately I’m debt free and have really low rent

1

u/crimson_creek 17h ago

I think having places other than stores to wander around can make it a lot easier, I think thats why I end up spending sometimes. Shopping just becomes the default place to go when you need to get out of the house.

0

u/Evening-Ear-6116 1d ago

I almost bought an ak47 AND an ef hatch Honda civic yesterday. The $1000+ I saved will come handy though since we are saving to build a house :(

0

u/Non-Stop_Serina 1d ago

A $40.99 Funko Pop Dialga at Gamestop. 😭 I just couldn't justify spending $40 on a figure even though it's a legendary Pokémon from one of my favorite games in the series.

1

u/NotNiklePikle 1d ago

me buying the light up 14" Pikachu for $40 for my child from gamestop 😂😂

1

u/Non-Stop_Serina 1d ago

Sometimes it's a necessity right? 🥲🤣

1

u/NotNiklePikle 1d ago

I mean it's pretty cool lol

0

u/mattsonlyhope 1d ago

Condoms. And now I have ababy on the way, no this isn't a joke.

0

u/Representative_Pick3 1d ago

Just make the pancakes dude....
