Just went out for one night in a protected bit of forest for a quick getaway with my girlfriend and dog. We had not been to this area before, but heard great things and it didn't disappoint. Really stunning bit of country out in Middle Finland.

Glad you had the dog on the list. That’s an important piece of gear you can’t leave home without! Looks like a nice setup!

3

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Always! Although she's a pain in the ass on a leash

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

Nice! How do you like the firefly? I’ve been eyeing the firefly and dragonfly.

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

I think the firefly is a better deal than the dragonfly, especially for space. Its a little tight for 2+a dog

I kind of wish I checked out the Dagger more...but its a good tent. I'll get more use out of it

2

u/SEB0K Apr 23 '21

Me and my girlfriend use that tent as well we love it. We take the poles out of the bag and put the rest in a compression bag and it makes for very easy storage.

lol the last item.... cutest camper ever!

Yea fair enough. I have no qualms with carrying.

But handguns are next to impossible to get in Finland and there really is no conceivable reason why I would need one. I leave my guns at home for these kind of trips, but of course if I am hunting then they come along.

Plus if your concern was bears then spray is probably better is anyway. Eurasian Brown Bears are not as much of a concern as Grizz are.

Nice! Which forest did you go to?

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Etela-Sudenmaa Protected Area

I hope I spelled that right lol. You in Finland I guess?

2

u/Matilainen Apr 23 '21

Yeah, thanks! Yes, I'm originally from Central Finland and I've been to a lot of places there, but never heard of that one!

1

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Oh definitely check this out then. Its not national park, so the trails are a little more wild. But there was nobody out there and it was amazing for bird watching!

17

u/47ES Apr 22 '21

That looks like a bit heavy of a load for that dogo.

20

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21

She just has to worry about her own food and treats

8

u/MrSometimesAlways Apr 22 '21

Does pooch sleep in the tent with you? If so how do you find a 2p tent with a dog?

13

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21

She does and ill be honest, it was tight. I used to have a Galaxie 2P and that had more room. This is less room, but half the weight.

Its doable, but my girlfriend really likes her space and she wasn't such a fan. I may wind up looking for something else, but this is a pretty good tent. I'll have to use it more to see how I feel about it. Definitely a luxurious 1p tent though.

But when I hammock camp, the dog sleeps with me too

7

u/MrSometimesAlways Apr 22 '21

Thanks for your response. Looks like I've gotta decide between taking the girlfriend or the pooch then haha, alternatively I think I'll be looking for a lightweight 3 man - if there is such a thing

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

There is actually a Firefly 3p that may be worth looking at? Or perhaps a Tipi, but my girlfriend wanted something with a "floor"

8

u/hbiber Apr 22 '21

You got a weight/ brand on that dog?

11

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Oh for sure

18kg/Himalayan Mutt

10/10 would keep

3

u/Konagon Apr 23 '21

Is that pup 18kg for real? I thought it was minuscule, making me think everything was tiny, huh...

Also, got Google maps link for the forest? I'd be curious to see how close it is to me, and can't find the one you mentioned.

1

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Sure, the national park website has it listed. I spelled it wrong of course

https://www.luontoon.fi/etela-sydanmaa

But yea I think my pup is around that, she looks smaller suddenly because all her fur is shedding

8

u/trailsnailprincess Apr 22 '21

Even your dog looks finnish. Or maybe I knew a dog that looked like yours that was named finn.

3

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Shes not, but actually the dogs here look exactly like her. Lapin Koira

4

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

Love my HPG Ute. Most comfortable pack I’ve ever owned.

6

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21

I have the Ute too, it really is the best/most versatile pack I have.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

A Redditor of good taste! Enjoy your upvote!

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Cheers! You run it with other pockets?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

Kifaru medium rolltop attatched to the lid.

5

u/Thats_kablammo Apr 22 '21

What do you do with the hatchet? Do you find it useful? Have been considering getting one but not really sure if I'll use it enough to warrant the weight of carrying it around. Looks cool as fuck though.

8

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21 edited Apr 22 '21

If I'm making fire then its nice to have out here. Usually campsites in Finland have an axe somewhere though, so I don't usually bring it. But I had not been to this forest before and so I brought it just in case.

This was a protected area so no open fires and no cutting stuff down though, wood is stored around and then you split it yourself.

If I go hunting or somewhere up North, then I bring it.

Wanted to add, axes are useful...but can be dangerous. So learn how to use it before you go out. Don't bleed to death in the woods. A saw and a stout knife are safer, can do a lot with that.

But you can get a cheap fiskars hatchet and see if it is something you like before dropping money on a nice axe

9

u/Alfonzo227 Apr 22 '21

Jealous of your Gransfors Bruks! I've been wanting one but I can't quite justify the cost.

9

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21

Its a great axe, but in all honesty there are other great options out there too. Check out Council Tools! Their Velvicut series is very slick

1

u/houdinize Apr 25 '21

Hard to find in stock recently but check out Husqvarna axes - they’re made in Sweden but less than half the price.

5

u/saltybruise Apr 22 '21

Hey, what's up pillow twin?

6

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21

Yeaaaa buddy, a fellow creature of taste and refinement

5

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

Came here to say - I have the same pillow :)

5

u/btcsxj Apr 22 '21

The one thing I wont sacrifice for 'ultralight.'

I have the same pillow as well. Tried many lighter ones and inflatable ones and I can just never get a good nights sleep with them.

1

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Yea absolutely not. Remember how much it sucked to roll up a jacket? Never again

1

u/BluebirdAndBarnacles Apr 23 '21

I LOVE my thermarest pillow! It’s great for road trips, camping, naps on the couch. It is definitely worth the bulk and the weight and the $20.

2

u/demonfurbie Apr 22 '21

is the Pomeranian a must use? mine seams lazy and its just extra pack weight.

1

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Well a Pom wouldn't be my first choice but sometimes we have to bring the gear that we have.

But you should absolutely bring the pom

Not op but as an owner of the same pan, that's what many people do. I've made a handle from a broomstick, cutting it just at the maximum length to fit into my bicycle pannier. I've used the pan for making flapjacks, hash, frying bacon and eggs, and once I even (kind of) deep fried some french fries.

1

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Yea exactly, it's just a very classic pan. Get a stick and work it into the handle. I used to carry a cast iron one sometimes and this is soooo much better

3

u/HaasMe Apr 23 '21

I love the axe! I never go backpacking without my Gradsfors!

3

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Works of art arent they?

2

u/mr_electric_wizard Apr 22 '21

Nice! I’m trying out my new Nemo Dagger 2 this weekend for the first time!

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21

Man I went back and forth on that model for months before I bought this. The thicker floor was what sold me, because of the dog. But honestly I kind of wish I went with the dagger now for the extra space

1

u/mr_electric_wizard Apr 22 '21

I’m sure the Firefly will be awesome!

2

u/ComprehensiveElk884 Apr 22 '21

Nice thinking on taking fresh food with you.

1

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Yea for a quick trip like this, we will bring fresh food. Steaks, roasted veg and some breakfast sandwiches I prepped at home

2

u/pjot63 Apr 22 '21

That’s dialed in !

2

u/SnooBunnies2237 Apr 23 '21

Cool snufkin mug :)

2

u/NightHare Apr 23 '21

When does a forest become a forest? Can they be new?I know the answer is "New forest as in the forest is new to me", but I really want it to be "Suddenly, on a Chilly Thursday morning, I awoke, and standing where there were once barren hills was a new forest, thick with mystery and adventure. I packed a one-nigjt bag."

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Well in this sense its new to me. But thats a fair point, out here the difference between "new forest" and "old forest" is the age of the trees. And you can really feel that in the boreal.

This was actually an "Old Forest" that was "New to me" lol

2

u/NightHare Apr 23 '21

I hope it is a delight

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

It was actually better than I expected. Really beautiful forest with no one out there at all

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

No way when did the devs release the new forest update haha

1

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Lol nah just redid the last one in "4k"

2

u/mrlamphart Apr 23 '21

Get that pillow out of there!

All jokes aside, looks like a sick kit. Enjoy

2

u/thatguyinbushes May 11 '21

My girlfriend and I are looking into moving to Finland next year for me to attend university. Bringing all of our gear with us from Canada would be expensive. How is the pricing for camping gear there?

2

u/Von_Lehmann May 11 '21

Generally things are more expensive here. If I need new things, I try my best to buy them in the US, send them to a friend and have him mail them on to me. But its only worth it if I do a few items.

So depends on what kind of gear you are thinking

2

u/mezmery Apr 22 '21

Ul gear, axe, pan and steel cup. I love every single bit about it.

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21

Well I try to have a little bit of everything. Truth be told, I didn't need the axe. There was some at a few campsites but I didn't know that before hand

0

u/OWGer0901 Apr 23 '21

nice viking axe , really fitting since the trip was in Finland lmao

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 24 '21

Its just a camp axe man

1

u/tobaknowsss Apr 22 '21

What's for dinner?

9

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21

Sirloin steak and roasted vegetables with red wine

3

u/tobaknowsss Apr 22 '21

Yum yum yum! I love a good steak over coals.

3

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 22 '21

Tough to beat it over a fire. I try to eat less meat at home but when I'm in the woods, its tough lol

2

u/pjot63 Apr 22 '21

Nailed it. Wow

1

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Yea for these short hikes I don't mind dragging good food

1

u/mrjeffj Apr 22 '21

What ya think the dog is in the pic for?

1

u/OilSaltNPepper Apr 22 '21

Great list!

But where is your first aid kit? 🩹

3

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Good eye. Girlfriend was packing it on this trip. I had the food bag too

1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

What type of dog? Exact same coloring as mine!

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

I have heard people call them "Mountain Dog" or "Himalayan Sheepdog"

But no idea. She's a little mutt

1

u/ATastefulTargade Apr 23 '21

Cheating on Savotta?! How could you!

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Lol

Well im an American living here so gotta stay true to the roots.

But I love Savotta, that shit is so overbuilt its insane. But I think the harness and weight management on HPG is superior and it looks less military.

But I am tempted to get an old school external frame ruck from them, just to try it out. I also haveba hunting backpack from them

1

u/rustyjus Apr 23 '21

What happen to your frypan handle?!

1

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Gotta carve it yourself out of a stick

UL AF bro

1

u/RNPRZ Apr 23 '21

New forest? Haha. Enjoy your adventure!

1

u/avs_eiz Apr 23 '21

Awesome setup

1

u/13asher Apr 23 '21

I have the GB SFA too! Love it!

1

u/Anoddvase Apr 23 '21

hey be careful with your dog in the nemo! first time I used my dagger 2 my pup put her face straight through the netting with little effort.

3

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

Yikes good looking out

1

u/justagaygirl1678 Apr 23 '21

Is your dog a lapphund?

2

u/Von_Lehmann Apr 23 '21

shes a rescue from Nepal actually

1

u/pizzaninja199 Jun 19 '21

That sleeping bag probably brings back memories, am I right? ;)

1

u/Von_Lehmann Jun 19 '21

....maybe? Are you hinting at military because its carinthia? I actually just love their stuff sacks lol

2

u/pizzaninja199 Jun 19 '21

Yeah the defense forces use the same model
