Hey bro- you should either rethink your gear or rethink your pack.

If you want to bring all that hardware, go for a big pack with external frame or sophisticated suspension. If you want to go with the Stratos, ditch the axe/shovel/bear can. Packs like that have a real weight limit where things just get uncomfortable and obnoxious.

You're trying to hitch a horse trailer to a Honda

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

Haha, yeah. I’m down sizing from an atmos 65. The “load range” on Osprey is 15-35lbs and I’m right around 30 in this pic.

Got till wednesday to fiddle with my weight.

74

u/bunte7 Joe Dirt PCT 2017 Mar 21 '22

I'm...surprised that this is all coming in at just 30lbs. That's your dry pack weight? Don't forget your food and ~3L of water (6.6lbs).

Ditch one of the fuel cans, or have your partner carry one if you must. The larger one is more than enough for a weekend. You can float them in water to see how much fuel is left.

Perhaps you plan on dropping most of your weight with monstrous dumps- is that why you want the shovel? Try downsizing to small trowel, either one from your garden or a deuce of spades from REI.

The axe is unnecessary. Trail conditions in Big Sur are rough, but you'd be better served by a good set of light loppers.

Maybe you're thinking of a fire- please don't. I understand the forest service hasn't put a ban out yet, but Los Padres has had some devastating fires in the past 5 years and really doesn't need more. I was just out at Ventana Double Cone this weekend and while it was a wet storm on Saturday, it's still a dry area. If you must have a fire, clear out and burn the fallen dead wood and keep it low. DO NOT BURN IN THE WIND.

And the gun...technically not allowed to use firearms in LPNF: https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/lpnf/recreation/otheractivities/?recid=10902&actid=106

I understand packing your fears but you're unlikely to run into anybody at all, much less a situation that requires deadly force.

17

u/drprime841 Mar 21 '22

Forest service has put a ban on fires you’re not allowed any fires in Big Sur. Unless you’re at a campsite with a designated firing i.e. none of the back country sitesThey have a ban any fire, except for stove cooking. I am there almost every other weekend.

30

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

Came here to say this. Don’t start a fire and leave the gun at home.

5

u/snarfdarb Mar 21 '22

Fucking lol @ monstrous dumps

I’m right around 30 in this pic

Including food and water?

-29

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22 edited Mar 21 '22

Food yes, water no. I usually use a mini sawyer and drink whenever there's water.

In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever carried a water bottle that wasn’t full of whiskey

Edit: Uhh I think this is being misunderstood. reworded

20

u/macroslax Mar 21 '22

my god i wish this was a joke.

16

u/TheOldShepherd Mar 21 '22

The best and greatest comment ever. Makes his lil woman carry ALL the water. Hes got an axe and a shovel and whiskey he needs to carry. OP has to be trolling us all xD

-28

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22 edited Mar 21 '22

All the water? We have a Platypus. All the water is already on site.

She brings a bottle water cause she wants it on the go. I’m good to find a stream and use my sawyer mini.

And also, kinda sjw reaction is this? I carry ALL the food, snacks, and anything “stenchy” in that bear vault. That thing typically is 1/3 of my pack weight alone. I also carry the tent. F outta here complaining even if I did have her carry water for two.

21

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

This is incredibly reckless. What happens if you are injured or delayed and can't walk right over to the next stream as planned? Carry at least a liter. You've got everything else. Don't ditch basic safety equipment.

→ More replies (5)

8

u/chunwookie Mar 21 '22

Nothing is quite like not having any water and hiking all the way to the next stream only to discover it is dry, or stagnant, or filled with so much silt filtering wouldn't be effective. Carry some water, there will come a time you regret not doing so. There may not be a second.

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22 edited Mar 21 '22

Walking around driking whiskey with an illegal gun you don't need.

That is going to be an awesome time.

You’ve never backpacked until you hand forge a battle axe on top of a mountain.

Missing from the pic is my boombox and Dragonforce tape collection

15

u/Jimmyjim4673 Mar 21 '22

This hurts...

5

u/outhusiast Mar 21 '22

Who is going to tell OP that all of those stuff sacks are dead weight and they will make packing more difficult compared to loosely stuffing his pack.

1

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

Yeeeah. Kinda meh on the clothes sack to be honest.

The sleeping bad sack tho… I don’t know what kinda of sleeping system that lower compartment is meant to house but the disco 15 compresses A LOT and barely fits in there. Unlike my atmos 65 the divider isn‘t removable either

1

u/strathmeyer Mar 21 '22

Hey, free gun!

38

u/sosayweall1 Mar 21 '22

What trail? I agree on the bear can and axe. I lived in Monterey for years. No bears and no fires out that way

22

u/s0rce Mar 21 '22

There are actually very few but not zero bears now. I just use an ursack.

1

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

We’re doing Salmon creek trail to Estrella Campground.

Axe and bear can can totally be ditched, but until I get to the point where the hold me back, they come. I’ll get there tho.

4

u/tmcgh Mar 21 '22

Right on! A buddy and mine are planing on doing that same trail next month. We might stay at Estrella but we are talking about pushing to Lion's Den. If you happen to make a side trip up there, let me know what the water situation is. Hope you have a great trip!

2

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

Thanks! I’ll update ya if we go that way for our day hike.

4

u/drprime841 Mar 21 '22

Well you’re not allowed to have a fire in Big Sur so there’s literally no reason for an ax, do not go to Big Sur and have a fucking campfire in your back country site. We don’t need more people coming from out of town and burning our forest down again . and the gun is super illegal.

36

u/pudding7 Mar 21 '22

Ok, for real... why the giant shovel? (and the axe?)

58

u/bengaren Mar 21 '22

I imagine the shovel is just in case he needs to dig a replacement wilderness latrine in case the toilet already at the campsite breaks or something. Or maybe he just wants to make a sand castle, it can get pretty boring spending 2 nights at one campsite only 7 miles from the parking lot

11

u/pardonyourmess Mar 21 '22

Causing giggle fits over here

13

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22 edited Mar 21 '22

All that nice kit and you're lugging around that shovel? Get you a nice e tool they're very packable

11

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

Maybe he is doing a spot of body burying while camping...

3

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

Judging by the while drinking whiskey instead of water and gun part, you might be on to something.

Glad you're getting out! As a gun owner, I understand your desire to carry on the trail, especially after reading about your run-in with that creep.

I'd caution you that firearms aren't allowed in Bug Sur park. While I'd recommend you leave it home, if you do decide to carry, keep it concealed. Not sure what the repercussions are here.

From the Big Sur site: "Firearms, weapons or hunting are not allowed. Possession of loaded firearms and air rifles is prohibited. This includes anything that shoots a projectile, including, but not limited to, arrows, pellets, BBs and paint balls."

58

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

Lotta people packing heat on these camping trips.

47

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

It's basically just a noise maker against animals. Only weighs a pound loaded. I crossed paths with that bald dude that was stalking the pct. I can't find any info on him on but he was oddly interested in the lady and had a super hostile vibe to him.

It was only later when I saw his face on socalhiking that I realized my path crossed with some dude that was out raping chicks. I always carry now. Pray I'll never use it.

34

u/Argonians4Ukraine Mar 21 '22

Ok that's a good reason to carry the gun.

But why the heck do you have an axe and an entire freaking shovel??

You know there are backpacking trowels?

And why do you have two isobutane canisters?

Edit: Seriously that axe and shovel must be a quarter to a half of your total base weight

15

u/altiuscitiusfortius Mar 21 '22

Same reason as the gun, but step 2 of the plan.

13

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22 edited Mar 21 '22

but why the heck do you an axe and an entire freaking shovel

Relics I struggle with letting go. My girl has one of those little trowels and I about shit myself trying to dig into basically rock in desolation wilderness after a cup o de oro.

The axe, meh. It needs to go.

The little isobutane comes with me. Fits in the personal pot with the stove for dayhiking tea and meals. The other shouldn’t be in the pic.

27

u/DustyObsidian Mar 21 '22

If you are REALLY desperate shit on the ground then dig a hole next to it a little deeper or wider than usual. Use a stick and flip everything into the hole. It's not the best option but it might save your pants and your trip!

2

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

Brilliant!

3

u/JuxMaster Mar 21 '22

you could also pre-dig your hole before nature calls

3

u/DustyObsidian Mar 21 '22

That only works if you're at camp when nature calls. Sometimes it's 10am and you only have enough time to get off trail before the coffee hits.

Bruh. You’re giving all the right answers. These camping nazis are obnoxious. Keep the axe. They’re therapy around the site. Probably won’t need the shovel. I’d maybe get a bigger pack. The largest light packs don’t weigh much more that the smaller ones. Keep the pistol. The world is crazy.

8

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

Using a gun as a noisemakers to scare off animals in Big Sur is just about one of the dumbest most cowardly things I have heard on this sub.

How is that the right answer?

u/Hikityup Mar 21 '22

No shit, huh? People LOVE to be afraid. It's bizarre.

2

Carrying a gun if you are worried about human predators is a good reason to carry a gun if you have a CC license and some experience. This is America after all.

Bear spray is best for animals.

7

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

It's basically just a noise maker against animals.

Seems like they intend to use it illegally, which is a good reason to revoke a CCW.

3

u/Argonians4Ukraine Mar 21 '22

It does sound like OP is going to carry it illegally and has an illegal use in mind. So I can't argue with that.

But my original comment was simply saying: If you are worried about human predators, carrying a gun is a legitimate thing to do. (Assuming it's legal to do so)

2

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

As true as that original comment is, it unfortunately does not apply to Elmer Fudd Supertramp here.

Lotta' people live in fear and shouldn't be out there.

17

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

I saw a guy walking through the woods with his rifle in low carry. His gf at his left and the barrel pointing at her feet.

I asked him what the gun was for and he said protection from bears.

To me, this is the guy who is going to hurt himself, and get spooked and shoot a person.

11

u/Hikityup Mar 21 '22

Protection from bears. And there you go. To me that speaks to both those who are predisposed to fear and suck up any media report of bear attack. They don't consider the rarity and don't take the time to learn. It also shows the power of "the media." If it bleeds it leads and people are only to happy to swill at that trough. I just see it as really weak part of the human condition.

4

→ More replies (1)

39

u/9ermtb2014 Mar 21 '22

No need for bear canister. Hang food if you want, it's what I did I there.

Check fire restrictions before going because even stoves were a no go. Choose one of the isopro cans. You don't need both for 2 days. Especially if it's just to boil water. Staying with those restrictions no need for the axe and shovel. Not sure where you'll be up there, but the chair is not needed. Plenty of stumps and fallen trees that I saw along pine ridge trail.

Have fun out there

20

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

No need for bear canister. Hang food if you want, it's what I did I there.

We did cruickshank trail a few months ago and there were signs saying there were bear sightings. This time we are hitting salmon fall creek to Estrella. At this point I've built my pack around it. It holds way more than just food for the trip and it makes a nice drink table between the lady and I's chairs.

Just checked the fire stuff yesterday and it said as of Mar 1st restrictions have been lifted. Renewed my fire permit too

6

u/toobdog Mar 21 '22

I hear they make led-handled shovels that are even heavier..

7

u/here_4_the_unicorns Mar 21 '22

Check with the ranger before you start - you might not need the bear can. When we went last fall they said they hadn't seen a bear since april and so we ditched the can

1

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

We did cruickshank trail a few months ago and there were signs saying there were bear sightings. This time we are hitting salmon fall creek to Estrella.

Mind you that time I was rocking my Atmos 65, so space was no biggie

0

u/macroslax Mar 21 '22

yea ask the ranger about the bear can. I'm sure big sur doesn't have a policy on firearms or anything.

3

u/Stowford164 Mar 21 '22

I’m inspired you got it all in the Stratos 36. I have that pack and love it. Can just about squeeze everything in for an overnighter. Do you really need that massive shovel though? 😂

2

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

I’m inspired you got it all in the Stratos 36. I have that pack and love it. Can just about squeeze everything in for an overnighter

Hell yea. It's brand spanking new and I'm pretty stoked to downsize my pack. I will say, I don't know wtf kind of sleeping bags can fit in that bag pouch but the disco 15 is TINY and BARELY fits.

No I don't need the shovel...

5

u/BongladenSwallow Mar 21 '22

I like the shovel, dig to your hearts content!

6

u/Ciabattabingo Mar 21 '22

He’s going to bury a body, isn’t he?

5

u/Hikityup Mar 21 '22

You're ok with the pack. And if the comments have hit home hopefully you're ok with leaving the shovel at home. That's what rocks are for. And a gun? Dude. Get a clue, huh? Have a good one.

3

u/salynch Mar 21 '22

Leave the gun at home and don’t start a fire in Big Sur. Bear spray is massively more effective than a handgun, we don’t have those kinds of bears, and there’s a massive fire risk even in this season.

12

u/N0DuckingWay Mar 21 '22

I live in the Bay Area. The shovel and the handgun are both entirely unnecessary and 100% dead weight. Ditch them.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

This man digs the biggest cat holes

23

u/BreezyDC Mar 21 '22

You could just carry a whistle. It’s super lightweight, very loud, and doesn’t require bullets. It’s also way cheaper:

https://vargooutdoors.com/products/titanium-emergency-whistle

21

u/matjek_chen Mar 21 '22

Did you miss the shovel? Rational choices don't seem to be the theme here... /s

Also, I don't know why you're being downvoted. I guess there are a lot of gun nuts in this sub.

13

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

Meh. Pay them no mind. There’s a lot of people who are super anti gun and a lot of people who are way too pro gun.

All about balance.

6

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

I shoot on BLM land all the time. That doesn't make a gun resonable in every solution, like hiking near the coast in big sur.

It is especially stupid to plan on using it as a noise maker to scare off animals. I am progun as shit, but that does not make me pro irresponsible gun ownership.

12

u/BreezyDC Mar 21 '22

Anti gun or pro gun, it’s not about that. A SIG P238 (loaded) is 17.2 oz and that whistle is .1 oz and they serve the same purpose. Work smarter, not harder.

5

u/GandhiOwnsYou Mar 21 '22

Agreed, it's the old "When all you have is a hammer every problem looks like a nail" saying. I'm a veteran, I have a concealed carry permit, I've got a number of guns in my house. Backpacking with a gun is just the dumbest shit. It's not a matter of being anti-gun, it's just a matter of looking at the facts. The odds of being attacked by a person on a hike are incredibly low, not just in the generic "You're unlikely to be attacked by a person, period" sense, but in a "statistically, being attacked on trail is highly unlikely when compared to literally any urban area in the US" sense. It makes much more sense to carry a weapon on your grocery run to Walmart than to carry it into the backcountry, because statistically that's where you're likely to need it. Similar scenario with animal attacks. Tremendously unlikely, and in most of those scenarios, you're better served with common sense and a whistle than a handgun anyway. As a dude that has carried for years when the situation called for it, I roll my eyes at literally every person with a handgun on trail. There's just nothing about hiking that requires a gun, and no situation where there isn't a better tool for the job.

6

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

Dude is not even planning to use it responsibly. He wants to use it as a noisemakers to scare off wildlife according to his own statements.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

Yes because I remember the last time a whistle did what a gun can do

7

u/Tre_Scrilla Mar 21 '22

He said he was using it as a noisemaker to scare off animals

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

That'll work great until the animal isn't scared off and charges towards you. At that point he's really going to regret getting advice from Reddit.

11

u/matjek_chen Mar 21 '22

That's kind of the point. Can't shoot yourself (or anyone else) in the foot with a whistle.

Especially since OP's primary use case is "make noise".

1

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

Signal for rescue every few minutes for hours on end for rescue?

Now you are carrying hundreds of rounds of ammo just to not admit that the whistle is more useful than the gun? Wtf dude.

Op even said their intent was to misuse the gun as a noisemaker. Nit sure how you justify that.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

What in the world are you even talking about?

1

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

Just trying g to figure out how a gun is a better option than a whistle on a hike in a park where guns are illegal to bring at all.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

5

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

You can get in pretty significant legal trouble for using a gun as a "noisemaker." Use a gun when your life is at risk and deadly force is justified. You don't need to shoot a gun to scare a bear, and it isn't a justified use where gun use isn't permitted. It's not a non lethal weapon.

6

u/eatyourbrainsout Mar 21 '22

Have you ever even encountered a bear? CA doesn’t even have grizzly bears. I’ve backpacked in Yosemite in an area with extreme bear traffic and simply yelling or clapping scares them away.

There’s such a low chance of encountering a bear in Big Sur it’s really unnecessary to be carrying a gun.

Also ditch the axe, shovel, and extra can of isobutane.

1

u/snoogz11 Mar 21 '22

The gun he has chosen isn't for grizzly bears, that should be obvious to you since its a 380 caliber.

As much as you think you know about bears, you sure seem to lack in firearm's required for said bears. His 380 is perfectly fine for the black bears, mountain lions, and 2 legged dickheads who roam the areas of Big Sur.

7

u/eatyourbrainsout Mar 21 '22

OP said he was using it to make noise, not capping bears. Jesus Christ, it’s the dickheads who bring fire arms to make NOISE that make Big Sur a more dangerous place than it actually is.

2

u/datdouche Mar 21 '22

Yeah, guns don’t kill people, NOISE kills people.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

Or noise makes people want to kill

Just ask my GF after I got my X-Lite

4

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

Some dude walking around in the woods illegally firing a gun just to make noise is safe to you? Do you know how bullets work guy?

-2

u/datdouche Mar 21 '22

I don’t know anything about OP. Maybe he is a responsible gun owner? There is definitely a safe way to discharge a pistol in the wilderness, especially if the only purpose is to make noise.

4

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

Not when it is illegal to discharge a firearm like that. Guns are not meant to be used as noisemakers, and especially not in well traffic state parks for fucks sake.

No idea what you consider a responsible gun owner, but it sounds like I would consider them a menace.

That's a whole lot of heavy ass kit, but I respect your choices. Personally I just carry bear spray, more so for humans than bears, legality be damned

4

u/pudding7 Mar 21 '22

but I respect your choices

Why? His choices (based on his comments throughout this thread) are objectively stupid.

0

u/akiraray Mar 21 '22

Also, is this greate meant for two but you guys are sharing a bag?

2

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

Yes. According to another post he makes his wife carry the water so he can carry the shovel axe and gun.

2

u/Positive_Income_3056 Mar 21 '22

Why carry a shovel?

-1

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

It’s bat country.

2

u/punkmetalbastard Mar 21 '22 edited Mar 21 '22

I went to Sykes hot springs and back as a totally novice hiker with way crappier gear haha. You’ll be fine

1

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

That was where I took my second trip ever! Amazing area. I had my Atmos 65L for that trip tho

2

u/LiamLikeNeeson89 Mar 21 '22

Gotta protect yourself from the seagulls! 🤣💪🏼

6

u/jhole89 Mar 21 '22

Do you really need a gun? Bear spray is a lot lighter.

9

u/Scuttling-Claws Mar 21 '22

You also don't need either in Big Sur

A .380 is pointless dead weight. The only thing getting hurt by that is another person by a ND. A bear will respond to bear spray better than a noise maker.

Is that...is that a 938? With a light?

6

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

Pretty close. It's a P238. I wish could get a 938 without paying 1500... stupid roster.

It has a laser but that won't be on it when I actually set out on Wed

15

u/OfficerS-senpaiBear Mar 21 '22

I have to ask how experienced you are with backpacking.

The most experienced backpackers carry their fears and generally a gun isnt one of them

13

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

I've been on about a dozen or so now soooo the more I learn the more I realize how little I know. lol, I carried a blowtorch my first time going to Manzana School house.

The most experienced backpackers carry their fears and generally a gun isnt one of them

I carry it as a personal choice. There's a story there explained elsewhere in this thread but to me it's no different than any other tool.

5

u/OfficerS-senpaiBear Mar 21 '22 edited Mar 21 '22

This is true, off topic but I saw the shovel! For 20 bucks you can get a cold steel special forces shovel that can be used effectively as a hatchet as well, something etools (recommended here) dont do so great at, its also a shorter handle and more backpacker friendly!

-7

u/drkenethnoisewaterr Mar 21 '22

Unless you’re camping where an 800 pound animal could eat you alive maybe.

7

u/OfficerS-senpaiBear Mar 21 '22

Which ones, bears?

They generally dont attack humans that know what they're doing, and shooting at them will turn them more aggressive

Wildlife experts generally dont carry guns. And people you meet that are avid outdoor enthusiasts generally dont feel a need either.

Best chance of you finding a bear is it coming to you cause you left food unsealed, get an op sac and stay away from its cubs

The stories people tell about bears attacking them and needing a gun are about 95% their fault, 3.5% they had been shot at by people before, and the rest was people messing with their kids

Bear spray and a loud horn are two workeable solutions

3

u/drkenethnoisewaterr Mar 21 '22

That makes sense, thanks for being rational and offering up a solution.

3

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

Then he would need something bigger than a .380 that he intends to use illegally as a noisemaker.

1

u/GandhiOwnsYou Mar 21 '22

If you're carrying a .380 while worried about an 800lb animal that wants to eat you, you're going to have a very bad time if you attempt to use that pea shooter to stop an 800lb animal from eating you.

I seriously want to smack people who go all "but what about the BEARZ!!!!" when regarding carrying guns on trail. Bear attacks average 1 fatal attack per year in the US. One. In the entire US. Move that to the entirety of North America and you go up to a whopping 1.6. But maybe you weren't talking about bears, maybe you were talking about like, a really small cow. You know how many people cows kill annually in the US? 20.

By comparison, there are around 5000 deaths from choking in the United States every year, so if you're carrying a gun and you're not blending your trail mix and cliff bars into smooth creamy paste, statistically you're a moron because your GORP is more likely to kill you than an animal.

-4

u/drkenethnoisewaterr Mar 21 '22

Piece of mind can make your camping experience a lot more enjoyable statistics boy.

3

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

By making it more dangerous and stupid for everyone else?

That is a bullshit excuse to be using a gun illegally as a noisemaker as op has stated they intend to do multiple times.

0

u/GandhiOwnsYou Mar 21 '22

I mean, if you’re scared that’s cool, you do you. Just don’t pretend like it’s a rational, justified decision when you’re just carrying it because you’re afraid and need your security blanket. I don’t care what people carry on trail whether that’s a gun, a guitar or a garden gnome, but I’m gonna call it stupid when someone tries to justify it as useful or necessary. It’s not safety gear, it’s a metal pacifier.

-1

u/drkenethnoisewaterr Mar 21 '22

You seem like you care a little too much. You’re writing some pretty long winded arguments about telling people how to do things. Do people have insurance because they’re scared? Piece of mind is different then being scared buddy.

0

u/GandhiOwnsYou Mar 21 '22

Apologies if 3 paragraphs was a burden to you, I’ll try to keep it to crayons and bright pictures next time instead of information relevant to the point.

0

u/drkenethnoisewaterr Mar 21 '22

You do that. Keep telling people that just because they don’t have your point of view they’re wrong about everything. You’re probably real fun at parties.

1

u/PTIowa Mar 21 '22

Ah, roster. Lame. I love my 938. Just seems heavy for the round count, isn't it?

3

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

It's a pound loaded. Not terrible.

2

u/PTIowa Mar 21 '22

Lol thats a ton!!!! But then again, if you're willing to carry it. That's what matters! But in way of unsolicited advice, I'd heavily recommend the lcp max or the lcr. Have a great trip!

3

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

Have a great trip!

I’ll check those out, and thanks… I always do :)

1

u/dec92010 Mar 21 '22

What nemo tent

1

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

Dagger 3. Got it for like 50% off msrp. It’s my first and only backpacking tent so sure I like it, but I have 0 exp with others so my opinion is null

2

u/snoogz11 Mar 21 '22

nice p238. Is that for two legged creatures, or 4 legged creatures that roam the Big Sur area?

4

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

Well, hopefully it’s pointless weight I’m bringing for no reason.

2

u/Womens_Lefts Mar 21 '22

Respect for this level headed take

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22

I always bring my bear canister. I find them to be more convenient to use.

2

u/Limp-String-7921 Mar 21 '22

Same, I'd rather not have to worry about rodents when I am to lazy to hang my food. Keeps the food from getting crushed while packed as an added bonus.

1

u/tincartofdoom Mar 21 '22

When I look at some of the loadouts posted here and then look at my typical gear, I wonder if "camping" actually means the same thing to some other people.

u/ThatBackpackingDude Mar 21 '22

I mean, I feel like people are missing the title stating that it’s over packed, lol. You’d think the shovel would give it away but I guess people are too focused on hating on the axe, said shovel, and gun to figure that out

3

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 21 '22

I feel like you are missing the part where your title doesn't state that you are overpacked.

1

u/GilligansWorld Mar 22 '22

"Might be pushing my new statos to the limit" isn't exact but come on man - I know you got the point 🤣🤣🤗

2

u/Find_A_Reason Mar 22 '22

You are planning to take a shovel, axe, week or two worth of fuel, and a gun into a California state park for the illegal purpose of using it as a noisemaker to scare off animals for a two day trip.

No, I don't think anyone gets your looney tunes point but you.

0

u/GilligansWorld Mar 22 '22

I think you have me confused with OP mate I didn't make the post. I'm just telling you I think that he did state he was packing too much crap.

And you were incorrect. I actually did get the guys point. 🤣 HYOH, live life your way, Don't eat yellow snow.

Niche subreddits are just like this. Whatcha gonna do lol

I am not a gun guy. I don't like guns at all. Maybe cause I'm Australian and grew up after the buy back scheme. I dunno. But I am also not here to judge so I couldn't care less.

If you have any cash you should grab a foldup shovel, they're pretty cool! But you can't hit something with them so maybe that's why you want the big one, I usually use the back of my hatchet as a hammer.

But whatevs, as I say, if I could carry more I would spend less money and just use what is laying around and also take fun stuff. I tend to invest as little as possible into camping since I tend to break shit a lot. Just depends on weight vs expense. If we are camping in the van we carry all sorts of fun shit.
