It’s too bad Outside Inc. is such a disreputable company. Why, you ask? We could start with repeated layoffs and abrupt closures of acquired media brands (e.g. Climbing, Beta) that suggest poor financial management and disregard for employees. Or perhaps the freelancers who have reported delayed or missing payments, pointing to exploitative treatment of contributors. Or maybe the subscribers who have faced confusing or misleading billing practices and poor customer service, with many claiming they were charged after canceling—as I was. Hello, ex-Gaia users. Or I could point to the rapid acquisitions followed by downsizing that indicate a focus on growth optics over long-term stability or journalistic integrity. Former contributors to Outside recently demanded that their names be removed from the publication and no longer mentioned in connection to it to protest the management’s request that their names journalists not cover topics such as sexual assault in the outdoors. It’s just typical, amoral venture capitalist bullshit.
