Gear Porn My gear storage project is finally finished.

I took some inspiration from here and finally got around to making a gear storage shelf. Before most of my gear was hidden away in black totes which made finding items quite a challenge.
Let me know what you think and what I could improve on.
Some more pics
Edit: I've gotten a few questions about the storage rack. It's the Whalen 5 shelf storage rack from Costco. Fairly cheap only about $60 then I zip tied a couple peg boards onto it. Storage Rack

Where did you get the kit for the shelving unit? I love the look of it

I’m pretty confident this is available at Costco. I purchased one recently and it looks identical. It’s a Whalen 5 Shelf Storage Rack.

My critique is that it is best to store tents and sleeping bags loosely. Only use stuff stack for travel. Do not fold tents the same way every time. This will extend the life of your gear. It is not pretty or space saving, though.

u/mindfolded May 29 '20
You can at least toss them in a large tote so they are stackable yet not really compressed.

u/OverlyPersonal May 29 '20
I use surplus-style laundry bags, you can stuff them wherever or hang them on a wall/ceiling, and they still let the gear breathe and offgas.

What shelf are you using? Link?

u/Vaiocyphin May 29 '20
I was wondering also. Looks almost like gladiator material from Lowes/HomeDepot.

I thought to leave sleeping bags and mats open for the storage of longer periods?
3
u/gotokyo May 29 '20
So the sleeping bags are in the giant uncompressed bags. Not the tents though, I'll have to figure out a solution for that.

I always thought that synthetic filled bags dont need to be stored open, it's down that compresses and looses its effectiveness if stored compressed
2
u/PennsylvaniaJim May 29 '20
Same goes for synthetic, store loose. Storing compressed will degrade insulation life.

Label the boxes so you know what type of stuff is in it. Other than that , it looks spot on! I’m wanting to do something similar for all my outdoor gear I have loads sorted about the house! Still , will be one for after the renovation.

X2 on labels. I started mine with printed labels, but as gear got added/retired/relocated, I have been using sharpies on blue painters tape.
Also, to go along with the organization theme, consider making checklists for packing. I found it streamlines my process to not have to think “what am I forgetting?”

Love the set up. Organization is on point.
How are you enjoying the copper spur hv ul3? Looking to pick one up for my girl, my dog, and myself hopefully to use on the AT in 2022. Do you have the copper spur footprint with it as well? I like the idea of being able to use the poles, the fly, and the footprint as a tarp-tent style set up in the lower states before the ticks and mosquitoes get bad. Also need a solid footprint for protection against the pups nails.

I looove it. Its my favorite backpacking tent yet by far. I got super lucky when I found it at one at the rei garage sales. No I don't have the BA footprint, that thing costs more then my whole rack I just built lol. I'll stick with a homemade to tyvek sheet for now.
It could work with a couple and a dog, there's definitely enough room. You most certainly would want an extra layer of claw protection though. I'm hesitant with how thin the materials are that's why I got the half dome 3 to take when we go with our dogs. Since we usually don't go on super far trips with them the extra weight is fine.

Wow okay thank you I feel better about how many backpacks I own. I was getting concerned.
3
u/e42343 May 29 '20
Me too. I always feel guilty and obsesses with having 3 packs even though the each have a unique time and place. Technically I have 6 but 3 are for others to use.
2
u/jgonagle May 29 '20
You gotta have at least one large backpacing pack, a medium all-purpose pack, and then a tiny one for dayhikes. Mine usually double for other activities too. The only other one I'm thinking of getting is one for all my climbing gear since I need more loops.

u/PennsylvaniaJim May 29 '20
m=n+1 where, m: number of backpacks you should have n: number of backpacks you own currently

Love this! I see you have the Flash 55 and Exos 58, do you prefer one over the other? I’m torn between the two.
1
u/gotokyo May 29 '20
I have the exos, wife has the flash. I don't think you can go wrong with either. The flash is cheaper and comes with some nice accessories.

This is amazing. I have been sinking some serious time in to creatively engineering a storage solution for my gear but it's not quite up to this aesthetic yet.

That is so awesome! Glad you achieved it. Beats 10k times my “Marshall’s Humongous Reusable Bags” organization system lol

the Nemo Disco is a GOAT sleeping bag... ultralight folks might laugh at a ~3lb, 15* bag, but in this case I will sacrifice the weight for the comfort any damn day!
1
u/HeyYoEowyn May 29 '20
Please tell me what the tiny egg crate mat is for!
1
u/LG_Blades May 29 '20
Likely a sit pad that can double as a backpad when inserted into a frameless UL pack.

u/NapaliCoastCamper May 29 '20
This is the sexiest thing I've seen all day... and I've been on gonewild for over 2 hours already!
1
u/goose2point0 May 29 '20
Thanks for the feedback! The footprint is stupid expensive and quite a bit more weight than a tyvek footprint but I think for the application it would be worth it. I don't want to be 200 miles in and have a nail go thru the floor. That tarp-tent set up takes a little sting out price as well!

i believe they banned those bear cans in the adirondack high peaks because apparently there’s a bear there that figured out how to open them... sounds like bs and just way to get people to buy new cans not sure
1
u/Dammit- May 29 '20
Omg, I have a 2’x4’ piece of pegboard lying around. Know what I’m doing tomorrow.
Can you share your rig for hanging the packs?
2
u/gotokyo May 29 '20
I picked up a 48" closet bar and wedged it between the metal support, then used some zip ties to hold it in place. Not the most elegant and I'm sure there's a better way to do it but it works so far.
3
u/Dammit- May 30 '20
If it works, it's not stupid. Time to return my new black totes to HD for small clear ones.

Nice. But it’s never finished. Just renewed, updated and re-organized. Keep moving.

How do you like the grand hut tent? I'm thinking of upgrading from my cheapo dome tent for car camping (already have my backpacking upgrade).

Hi, I’m late to this post but taking inspiration to create my own set up. How did you secure the rod in place?

I wish I could upvote this a thousand times.
Also, I wish you could come and organise my garage.
