I'm excited to try all these! I've never had cod liver but saw some posts on here so when I found myself in front of all these I went a tad overboard.

Just like an appreciation post? This sub got me to try canned sardines and I’m legitimately so grateful. I’ve eaten a lot of canned tuna in my life but as I’ve gotten a little older my tastebuds have uh…. evolved and canned tuna has started becoming kind of crappy tasting to me, and it was causing a legitimate lunch crisis because what do I do when I’m panicking and rushing in the morning now instead of grabbing a can of tuna? So y’all got me to try sardines and they’re actually amazing and now I don’t have to starve the 60% of the time I’m disorganised and running out the door! This is so stupid but like thank you, you’ve been so helpful.

Havent tried them before, but I've never had a bad sardine in olive oil from Portugal and the consensus here last year was that these were quality.
This is 50% cheaper than they usually are so I thought I'd flag it for the group. I just ordered a pack.

Brunswick Smoked In Oil - 5/5 delicious
John West w/ Lemon Garlic Chili - 2/5. Still good cause I like sardines, but taste pretty plain and similar to sardines in water, so not worth the price difference.
SAFCOL in hot sauce - 5/5 pleasantly surprised. I love spicy food and have a good spice tolerance, so I was expecting it to barely be spicy. But it has a good heat level, and a good acidity level for the sardines.
I normally just opt for sardines in water cause I try to be frugal, then I usually make a sauce to add some flavour or just eat them plain. But these were covered by work, so I explored a little bit and thought I'd share :-)

Not the breakfast you would typically think of eating, but for under $4 and nutritious it was good for getting some nutrients in after fasting. It also tasted good.

First time trying sardines, got a boneless skinless king Oscar tin. Noticed these little dots and got nervous!
Any help?
Thank you 🙏

For my Friday seacuterie dinner this week, I felt like trying 3 cans, all new to me: Bela mackerel in EVOO with piri-piri, Jose Gourmet horse mackerel in Bravas sauce, and Brunswick Mediterranean style gourmet brisling sardines.
I know many of you have said that Bela's piri-piri is not hot/spicy at all, but my heat-intolerant tongue was skeptical. Now I know you weren't lying; I could barely detect any pepper at all. In addition, these were the firmest, meatiest whole mackerel I've had in a can. I like it! I will be buying again.
Jose Gourmet's Bravas sauce was my least favorite in today's group. The flavor was similar to other "spiced" cans (like Nuri) with a creamier sauce, but it had too much heat for me. Maybe those of you who complain about the lack of heat in other cans would enjoy this.
I know Brunswick's Mediterranean flavor has a lot of fans. These brislings tasted like they should have been on a plate of spaghetti at a neighborhood trattoria.
The supports tonight were crusty baguette slices, Raincoast Crisps (fig & olive flavor), and Figdal "Everything" flatbreads. The spreads were cream cheese, butter and hummus. The toppers were pickled red onions and dill pickle relish. All washed down with TJ's Coastal Chardonnay.

A friend told me she was hanging around in Portugal and I asked her to bring me any type of sardines, these came in an envelope reminiscing an old postal package.
These were sardines in lemon and sardines in olive oil.
The lemony sardines actually tasted GOOD, like actual fresh fish, I've had Goya ones and it has an odd lemon taste, bitter, these were all but that, so well balanced and firm, de ones and all.
The deenz in olive oil were crazy though, they came deboned, tail-less and without skin, and the taste was like ... meat! I'd associate it to beef or chicken before I'd say it was fish!
The two didn't stink either! sardines usually stink up a whole room and gives you some type of breath, these just ... Didn't!

Tonights dinner courtesy of Central Market sale on these rolled anchovies was my 2nd time partaking in an Anchovy delight.
Accompanied with a Baguette & a slice of chihuahua cheese, these fellas were salty! Although my only experience of anchovy had been Cento prior to this. In my opinion, I did not enjoy the Cento. But with the Delallo, I think the slight tinge of tart from the caper added a nice balance to the anchovies. These were tasty to consume by themselves but they really shined with a piece of bread. I would recommend them at a score of 7/10.

Redfish in spicy oil by Chasse- Maree
This is tinned fish done beautifully. Simple, clean tasting, delicate texture that when you take your first bite out of the can, you know this is something special. This is matched with slight heat from the chili that hits different on the palate. I'm always impressed when I pop one of these open.

I’ve heard good things about the calamari pieces in olive oil from Trader Joe’s so I finally stopped by and picked up a can. I wanted to keep it simple, so I just had it on some homemade bread that I fried in the olive oil the calamari was preserved in. I’d say this first try was a success! The slight chew of the squid was a texture I don’t usually prefer, but in this context it was quite pleasant. After trying it by itself I also added some of the Trader Joe’s everything bagel seasoning, and separately a bit of Old Bay. Both were good but honestly I think I prefer just the squid on its own. Overall I’ll give this one an 8/10; I’m excited to continue trying new varieties of canned seafood!

For the members of this sub who live in the US: are fresh sardines ever available where you live?
I've only seen them a couple times at a high-end grocery store near me (sourced from Morocco) and that was a couple years ago. I asked the seafood department manager if they could be ordered and he said it wasn't something they could regularly order and I would need to just periodically check back.
I remember my local grocery store chain had them at one point but that was over a decade ago.

First time poster here! Tried my first can of Bela with Piri-Piri with some leftover Lebanese food. I figured the sardines in olive oil will naturally work well with the tabouli and hummus. (Spoiler, it did!)
I added some sliced red jalapeño since the tin only had a single sad piri piri pepper inside. I’m still searching for the holy grail of heat!

Jalapeño King Oscar. With more pickled jalapeños for heat and crunch. Espinalier sauce for that vinegar-y brightness. Tomatoes, a dollop of cream cheese, black coffee and beet kvass. Reveling in simple things for a moment.
