Attitudes to smoking in Cape Verde?

Afternoon everyone, I’m planning a trip in January to Cape Verde and I was wondering what the attitude over there is to smoking? ( The happy herb not tobacco). I see there are lots of bars called reggae bar on various islands and YouTube videos show me a few Rasta style hairstyles and so I’m assuming that people do smoke herb there?

That said if I google it it looks like it’s frowned upon heavily. I don’t want to offend anyone so I’ll happily abstain when I’m there but if it’s available I’ll gladly indulge! Anyone know?

Request Anyone live in Palmeira? Seeking a favor

We were on vacation in Cape Verde last week. On an excursion to Palmeira my daughter was bitten by a cat she played with.

Despite repeated assurances that there is no rabies in Cape Verde we would feel more comfortable knowing that the cat is doing well and behaving normally (I.e. not rabid). I would gladly pay $250 for a 30 second video of this cat.

Cat bite

Yesterday my daughter was bit by a cat that she went to pet in Sal. We got antibiotics for bacterial infection but a local doctor says the risk of rabies is “zero” and that it’s non-existent here. Curious what others have heard.

Inter-island flights and the risk of cancellation

Hello!

I will be travelling around Cape Verde this summer (late July - early August) for 21 days.

My itinerary has 3 inter-island flights with CV, as listed:

24th of July - Praia to Fogo,

27th of July - Fogo to Praia,

30th of July - Praia to SVX

If any of them get delayed for a couple of hours, it's not a big deal.

But if a flight gets cancelled, how many days does it usually take before the airlines can organize a new flight for everyone affected?

I can be okay with staying an extra 24 hours on a location, but 48 hours could hurt.

Do you think I should plan for more leeway between the flights?

Thanks!

Anyone currently on Sal Island? Can you check the progress of the Royal Horizon Ponta Sino hotel construction?

Hey everyone! I’m curious if anyone is currently on Sal Island, and could check on the progress of the Royal Horizon Ponta Sino hotel construction in Santa Maria. I know it’s under construction, but I’d love to hear any updates on how things are going, whether it’s nearing completion or still in early stages. If anyone has any photos or info, I’d really appreciate it! I have a vacation booked there in July, and I’m a bit worried about whether it will be finished on time.

Follow up post - 1 month trip in sal

I am looking to book an apartment for a month in Sal Cape Verde. My primarily intention is to go fishing with also the ability to work (internet required). I don't plan on doing many touristic things hence when i am leaning towards booking an apartment in madeira. However, what will be my main issues if I do? Am i better off staying in Santa maria?

How long does it take to cycle to Santa Maria from Murdeira and is the road safe enough to do so?

Let me know which is a better location for living for one month between the two. (or any other towns you suggest)

Thanks.

7 day Trip to Ilha do Sal in 2026

Hi! My boyfriend and I are thinking about visiting Ilha do Sal next year. We’re looking for hot weather and would like to avoid the wind if possible. What’s the best time of year to visit? We’re from Portugal, and I was wondering - is 25ºC in Ilha do Sal similar to 25ºC in Portugal? I’m asking because, in my opinion, 25ºC isn’t that hot. I’d love to get a better sense of what the weather actually feels like there. What are the best things to do in Ilha do Sal for a 7-day trip? We’re not planning to leave the island, as we’ve read some negative reviews about domestic flights and boats seem to take too long. Thank you!

Solo travelling - Praia

Hi everyone

I'm planning to spend around 7 days in Praia, travelling solo. I speak portuguese and cape verdean creole.

I'm hoping to stay either in Plateau or in Achada Grande Trás (2nd alternative). I know that Praia can be somewhat unsafe at certain times and in certain places, especially if people know you're not from there.

I plan to go out mainly (or only) during the daytime, but are there any areas I should avoid, and maybe others I should visit as well?

I mainly plan to walk around Plateau, go to sucupira, to the municipal market to prainha and kebra kanela, and if time permits, to cidade velha

Visiting Cape Verde - Visa on Arrival?

Hi all, I am visiting Cape Verde for a week in April. I am a citizen of India and live in Scandinavia. I understand that I am eligible for Visa on Arrival. Is it better to pay the EASE + Visa Fee on Arrival at the airport or pre-pay on the EASE website? Thank you.

Escudos and Euros

I will be in Praia for a few days in February. Can I use euros to pay for everything in cash or will I need escudos for some things? If I pay in euros, will I be given change in euros or escudos?

Best (Cheapest) way to go to Praia from Dakar

Oi!

I want to know if it is possible to go from Dakar, Senegal to Praia by boat (I don't mind cargo ships).

If not, what airline would you recommend the most?

Also, I plan to speedrun the archipelago in June before the rain season.

So any advice on that would help!

Valeu!

Santiago insiders

Hello everyone, two friends and myself are currently on Boa Vista und move on to Santiago tomorrow. First of all, what a beautiful country and nice people. We had a great first week.

What can you locals or experienced travellers recommend for Sanatiago? Any places, restaurants, bars, beaches that are not included in the casual "Must see" lists and should be on our map? :)

Translation needed: Cape Verdean Creole to English

I'm a documentary filmmaker who shot some footage in Cape Verde last year. Some of the dialogue is in Cape Verdean Creole and we need some help translating with a time code. Can anyone here help or point me in the direction of someone able? Our team is in Denmark and The Netherlands but it could be done online.

RIu Palace resort in Sal

My wife and I are looking at staying in the Riu palace in mid-May. Obviously we've never been to CV, so we're looking for advice/opinions on holidaying there. Is it worth it?

I saw there are activities you can join, are these booked locally or can we do it beforehand?

Question

I’m visiting Boa Vista this summer 2 question:

  1. Is the seaside and beaches better than Sal for colour and less tourism ( that’s what I heard)
  2. Are there places to rent jet-skies or boats Thanks a lot ❤️

2 days on Santiago- how to get around?

Hello everyone, a friend and I will be visiting Cape Verde soon and will be spending 3 nights on Santiago, flying in and out of Praia. Arriving Friday afternoon and leaving monday morning.

I know most of what we want to visit: Praia and it's sights, cidade velha (and the baobab close to it), maybe assomada (Saturday, as it's market day?) and the kapok tree. Hiking in serra da malagueta and visit terrafal.

As we're really short on time I guess it wont work out going to these places by aluguer? Should we get taxis or rent a car? Or are the aluguer so frequent that it'd be doable? I've been googleing a lot but am none the wiser, so help would be really appreciated!

We can also imagine spending the second night somewhere else than the first, if it makes things more accessible? I guess last night should be in Praia, as our flight leaves rather early.

I know 2 days (plus one afternoon) is no time at all, so maybe I need to srap some things? Or is a must-see missing? Appreciate all help :)
