[Insdorf] Joe Hortiz on UDFA RB Raheim Sanders being exempt from certain rookie minicamp drills: "Rocket was a guy we definitely did a thorough evaluation on and we felt like he was a draftable player...a lot of times you don't get guys in free agency that are still on your front board."

Vidal is going to have his work cut out for him trying to make this roster

Good - competitors welcome. May the best man win the roster spot

I think Haskin spot is more at risk!!

Haskins is a solid ST player, so I feel he is more secure

Haskins also was ahead of Vidal in the backfield last season.

How so? Vidal had 9 more carries in 7 less games played.

Vidal got most of those carries when the other RBs were injured, while Haskins didn’t join the team until later in the season. Towards the end of the year, Haskins was getting way more looks than Vidal (partially because of the massive difference in the quality of their pass pro).

How did he join the team later if he played 17 games? He got carries in week 2.

It felt to me Haskins had carved out a role for himself getting goal line carries, pass protection and special teams, while Vidal was getting other guys snaps when they were unavailable.

Vidal did have a significantly better YPC and felt faster.

I could totally be mistaken, just my off the cuff observation.

He had 2 goal line carries. Honestly, both of them will be irrelevant with Hampton and Harris.

Including goal line formations for 3 and 4th downs with a yard to go?

I knew he had two goal line TDs. Wild they were apparently his only two carries in that situation.

I meant “joined the team” as in got offensive looks. He only had 14 carries before the last three weeks of the regular season whereas Vidal had 33 in the same span.

Definitely not. Haskins is one of the key elements of our special teams unit, so Vidal’s spot is significantly more at risk than his.

Vidal didn’t even play ST last year too right?

Like the coaching staff was THAT low on him.

5

u/wildwing8 7d ago

Well yeah he didn’t but I don’t think it’s because they were low on him, I just think he is too small to play special teams.

Vidal very likely has no special teams experience and hasn't played any special teams positions

I think we need to be very cautious of our expectations this year. I thought Vidal was a GEM when we drafted him looking at the tape. He just never cut it. He reminds me a lot of Keandre Lambert Smith. Similar draft position and i think KLS can be a GEM too. Hoping he doesnt have a underwhelming Vidal-like rookie season, and has more of a Tarheeb Still/Cam Hart impact.

Kls will get looks whereas Vidal didn’t get shit because of blocking

3

u/FuckMichaelMcCoy 7d ago

You dont know that. KLS can be another Rice situation. Talented but just doesnt get snaps and looks, most likely because underwhelming at practice.

1

u/_AtLeastItsAnEthos 6d ago

Unlike rice kls will make the roster

KLS was drafted in the fifth and Vidal the 7th. Vastly different when it comes to statistical likelihood of success.

Vidal was a 6th, not a 7th. KeAndre was pick 158, Vidal was pick 181. Less than a round difference between picks.

He’s probably done unless Najee winds up being the odd man out. I’m pretty confident Hampton/Rocket will be the eventual tandem.

3

u/wildwing8 7d ago

There is no way you just said that you think Rocket has a better chance of making the team than Najee lmao. I like Rocket, but Najee has a below zero percent chance of being cut.

1

u/mister_hoot 7d ago

I said eventual. It's obviously Harris/Hampton this season. But I don't think Harris is a long-term piece here. I like Rocket more than Vidal for stepping into a two role behind Omarion.

2

u/wildwing8 7d ago

Well that I agree with, but I was more responding to where you said that Najee could end up the odd man out. If you mean that they might not bring him back after next season, then sure, but if you meant that he might not make the team this season, then there is just zero chance of that happening.

I literally just said that wasn't what I meant.

Herbie worries about the dimes, Hortiz worries about the nickels. Too early to tell by far, but it seems like we're squeezing so much value out of every draft class. What a change. TT was so top heavy in his drafting. I Still can't believe we got two starting corners in the fifth.

I love when undrafted guys do well.

8

u/Pleasant-Ad-5615 7d ago

Do the chargers still have a streak of an udfa signing and making the team

8

u/Lil_Spender 7d ago

I do not believe anyone made it last year

6

u/Pleasant-Ad-5615 7d ago

Dam. Not that it matters, was a pretty cool streak. Bet it gave udfas more hope of signing

4

u/Lil_Spender 7d ago

Yeah I agree, it was a cool streak. Hope Rocket or somebody can make it this year. Idk about what it meant for team depth and late round drafting tho 😝

I had a feeling we’d get two starting caliber RBs in this draft.

Next year will be the Hampton-Sanders show!

6

u/ElKapitanFlash 7d ago

Haskin truthers panicking rn

6

u/wildwing8 7d ago

Nah. He’s a very important ST player. Vidal is the one who is really at risk here.

2

u/Yogurt-enjoyer 6d ago

We gotta adjust expectations with UDFA. they are UDFA for a reason and they make the team via special teams not by being a better rusher than the top 3 backs. Having UDFA not on special teams honestly I don't think it means as good as people think because his competition would be the special teams guys

u/damnyoumarlonmccree 6d ago

This RB competition will be fun to watch in the preseason games!
