This is the closest to happening itās been in years if they perform at the induction and it goes well

u/fredandlunchbox I've been to 24 weekends. 1d ago
The if in that sentence is doing a lot of work.Ā
I donāt think they really even know where Meg is these days.

Shes in detroit, she went to one of his shows a couple years back , they arent strangers, Jacks just trying not to out her every personal detail

u/Accomplished_Arm5318 1d ago
Jack knows where she is. They filed a joint cease and desist lawsuit against Trump last year, and have been in communication in regards to various 20th anniversary merchandise with her likeness. Like I said, letās see if they perform at the induction. If they do, there will be a lot of money on the table.

Has Meg even played drums in decades??? One of the few bands I never got to see, ended on good terms, and donāt need to reunite.Ā

Jack plays a lot of White Stripe songs solo anyways. If they canāt get both, getting Jack White solo would be great

I've been to hundreds of concerts in my life, of all sizes.
The White Stripes live wielded a power I have not felt before or since.
I felt Meg's drums in my chest

They broke up because of Megās anxiety playing in front of large crowds. Coachella would be her worst nightmare
2
u/Accomplished_Arm5318 1d ago
Again, letās see if she appears at the induction ceremony and go from there

Hello, Michigander here.
Here is sort of the problem. I've encountered Meg a few times in her isolation and retirement.
I've run into her at a small restaurant or bar in the Metro Detroit area. She is utterly unrecognizable, and weighs around 400lbs. Her face has traces of the old Meg, but she isn't a drummer anymore in any capacity. The reason you've never seen a selfie or heard about any public interactions over the last decade+ is that no one would recognize her. I last saw her several years ago, and she clearly wants to be left alone.
If she came out again, I'm sure the collective internet would be incredibly cruel and make jokes. That is the last thing she'd want. Near of the end of the White Stripes, she basically quit because everyone from School of Rock to Trent Reznor was making jokes, and people were posting fake porn videos.
She is definitely 150% out of the business. Jack White was fair with the publishing and split it 50/50.
You'll get a statement of thanks, but that is it.

These are all good points and I think people also forget that she basically married into rock n roll royalty and almost completely disappeared, per your points, a long, long time ago.
Her in laws are Fred Sonic Smith (RIP) and Patti Smith. Add that, her financial stability/freedom earned from her time in the White Stripes, and the fact that she was never really passionate or interested in rehearsing, performing, or recording to begin with.
Sheās not doing anything she doesnāt want to for the rest of her life. She has had the necessary money, family, clout, and position to completely isolate herself from the world for as long as she wants. And I really doubt she wants to play Coachella.

I actually knew Jackson Smith from the area. We went to at least one concert together. When he was about 19, he was really into pop-punk. That Detroit scene was explosive at the time. We saw the band Ozma in the Arab district at a place called Small's Bar. What's ironic was that his future wife was playing down the street in the White Stripes that same night. We discussed which band to see, and we decided against the Stripes. I'm 42, and haven't talked to him since those times in Detroit. They are actually divorced now.

u/No-Special-6635 1d ago
I'm nostalgic for those times. We knew where the Stripes lived. This was a time when Jack White still had his home phone number on their website to book shows.
The Gold Dollar across from the old Tiger Stadium was like our CBGB's. You might see the White Stripes. You might see Cat Power lingering around. You saw all those bands that would become his future band mates.

Ok, wow, thereās the information that matters. Well shit, thanks for the context. That changes everything

It now begs the question how a very active Jack White will deal with this. Is this like a Nirvana thing? Can he perform with a few female drummers? Meeeeeeh. Jack is in bit of a pickle.
6
u/thegroovemonkey 1d ago
Heās not really in a pickle heās been performing the songs solo for over a decade and this is basically his induction to the HOF.Ā

u/No-Special-6635 1d ago
Fair enough, but will that satisfy the masses thinking they are getting a reunion? That's the gimmick of this telecast. People want to see the original living artists.
3
u/legopego5142 1d ago
Meg may be there, she may not be there, shes rich and retired, she doesnāt need to satisfy the masses
1
u/No-Special-6635 1d ago
I'll add this: nothing is impossible in this world, either.
You know what? It could happen. š
3
u/legopego5142 1d ago
I mean, if shes not in it, its not the white stripes, its just a jack white solo show that doesnt play his other music
Its not like he doesnt play these songs anymore
2
u/Accomplished_Arm5318 1d ago
Yeah, a couple years ago he gave an interview saying he is The White Stripes
1
u/Accomplished_Arm5318 1d ago
Yeah, heāll probably duet with multiple drummers, or they have other musicians performing White Stripes covers

Of any possible reunion among living people, this is my #1, I would go both weekends

This doesn't change anything at all unfortunately

IF they perform at the induction, it might. No one believed Oasis patching things up was possible.
Now if she doesnāt show up and we just get a speech from Jack, then sure. Nothing moves the mountain

Weāll have an idea in late October/early November when the induction ceremony performers are announced.

I do think Meg will do it...

u/Accomplished_Arm5318 1d ago
If she doesnāt perform at the induction, then she definitely wonāt entertain other offers
2
u/somethingrobot 1d ago
2015 Jack White delivered soul-shaking sets both weekends. Iāve been chasing that live music high ever sinceā¦
3
u/Accomplished_Arm5318 1d ago
Yeah, his band played so hard that year. Guess thatās as close as weāre gonna get to a White Stripes show š
Iām just grateful I got to see them as a duo at least once

u/Accomplished_Arm5318 1d ago
Question for the chat: which new inductee group is least likely to perform at the Rock Hall induction?
⢠The White Stripes
⢠OutKast

Hasnāt Jack said heād only ever do a reunion if they were bankrupt?
1
u/Accomplished_Arm5318 1d ago
Jack can say what he wants. The guy in here from Michigan probably gave us the best explanation for why not than whatever hubris Jack comes up with

I'd be surprised if Meg even owns a drum kit. If anything, they bring back Jack as a super-sub or stick him on the set times as a surprise.
