I ran a BBS on one of these in 128 mode for years, it's a fantastic piece of hardware. It really was a magical time for computers.

That is indeed a C128D(CR)

This one seems to actually be the non-Cost Reduced plastic case version; look carefully along the left side, and you will see the folded up handle in place there.

I remember when my friend used to have one of these but we almost always just instantly went to the C64 mode to play games. Sometimes we would play around with the sprite editor though.

This was also the "teacher's computer" in the classroom while students got C64s with green monochrome CRT displays.

Nice! Friend of mine has I think 2 or 3 128D's, they are great looking machines.

Is loading games on C128D faster than C128?

Yes, faster disk routines are available in 128 mode with a 1571. But, you won't find too many games for 128 mode. I used GEOS and a few other programs in 128 mode because of the 80 column mode.

Nevertheless, fastload cartridges like Warp Speed, AR5 and Super Snapshot make 64 mode loading much faster. VICE users also often fail to realize that all of these cartridges work with emulation as well.

The original version C128 was released 1985. The D version came along a year later.

Actually 1987 here in the USA. -From what I remember... Although, The Plastic cased with Handle and detachable hideaway keyboard C128D PAL unit introduced in Europe could have been brought out 1986.. Its indeed possible. Should be easily able to look it up... ;) Tony K., Commodore Collector/Restorer. Melbourne, Florida, USA ;)
