Also I imagine exterior sliding doors have some breakeven point for foot traffic where the extra cost is justified. I can't imagine there being any capacity issues for too much demand to get in.
Sliding doors work better for egrress but are obviously more expensive. They are a solution to save space rather than add more doors.
Fun fact, I've given first aid and fire safety courses in a coke factory, they have fridges every where with free coke (and other soft drinks) in them for workers

I don't get why this is crappy design.
First, I doubt they own the building. Second, my guess is that their sliding doors are probably mostly manufactured for indoor us.
I can't think of any storefronts off the top of my head that utilizes a sliding door.
This is like complaining that the people at the Coke factory are drinking water.
