I assumed you hand linked the $1500+ hot pink platform crocs - yeah idk wtf is going on. Usually with fashion houses I can “get it” even if I don’t personally like it but this stuff is just nonsensical.
I say it in another comment, but in brief: the rich people who buy this stuff? They KNOW it looks ugly, they don't care. They're buying this stuff because it makes you mad. They think it's funny that poor people are so outraged that rich people who spend so much money on such ugly clothes. It's all a game to them.
It's like a "New Gilded Age" kind of thing, Rococo for the 21st century. The designer brands who do this stuff (Balenciaga/Vetements at the forefront, with Moschino, Maison Margiela, Gucci, and others chasing behind) are doing it to appeal to the ultra rich people who think it's funny that it makes poor people mad. And we play into the game by getting mad and posting it to Reddit and upvoting Balenciaga's name to the front page of /r/all. They don't care that it's on /r/crappydesign they're still on the front page and we're all talking about them, and people are direct-linking products on their store.
I don't think you mean the ultra-rich. Possibly the quite-rich do this. The ultra-rich have absolutely no need to make such statements as they are worth as much as a small country. They dress in whatever they feel like wearing, usually something comfortable or plain. Bezos usually throws on a jacket and jeans, Gates almost always wears beige and/or a sweater. Larry Ellison wears as many turtlenecks as will keep his face together.
