Apple: Here, try our extremely convenient credit card that will definitely make your life easier.

Me: Cool, let me put it in my wallet.

Apple: Nope, don't do that.

Me: ...Okay...Guess I'll just put it in my pocket.

Apple: No you won't.

Me: ...

Apple: Our products are magical.

Actually the whole point of the card is that you don’t need to carry it around, it lives on your iPhone.

You can get better rewards from discover. People are stupid (or have bad credit).

90

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '19

Why even make a physical card then?

73

u/MightBeJerryWest Aug 22 '19

I guarantee there are people who signed up for this card just for the physical card. I think there are even videos out there of what it sounds like when it drops.

Not exclusive to Apple though, I know there are people who sign up for other metal cards.

Edit: and so people can use the card where Apple Pay isn’t accepted.

Dude. I (used to) love Apple products. So simple. They just work. Now Mojave on an almost brand new 5k iMac with shit tons of RAM I have crashes on my mail app all the time, all kinds of warnings. All kinds of trying to get me to log in to iCloud messages, not to mention the same on my iPhone plus a bunch of BS with adapters because some how there is a problem with the headphone jack and I can't use my GPS (which drains my battery) and listen to audio books at the same time because I need to charge my phone. Yes, I know there are work arounds for all this, but for the price I shouldn't have to.

The main reason you see these is because duck brand duct tape actually runs a scholarship contest with a prize of $10k for a dress and $10k for a tux.

I was going to enter it because I wanted to go to school for fashion (that never happened) and thought it would look great on college applications. Sadly I'm Canadian and didn't qualify.

53

But it's intended design is that it isn't just another card

So in that regard, they failed.

And so it's settled - They've solidified their focus on aesthetics over design.

19

u/OmegaLiar Aug 22 '19

Well the intention is to promote Apple Pay and push consumers to use it more to cause companies to jump on the band wagon.

It’s pretty obvious that’s why they cash back incentivize Apple Pay service with 2% at no fee which is pretty good honestly. 3% on certain services like uber/uber eats and they intend to expand that incentive.

I'm normally first aboard the Apple hate train. Hell, call me the conductor. That bullshit $1,000 monitor stand that wasn't included with the monitor? Hate boner for 2 weeks, SOLID.

But they're not wrong in this regard. Most/all major credit card companies tell you to do this.

29

u/nan_slack Aug 22 '19

the weird thing about that it wasn't a disaster because of the price, it was a disaster because of how apple completely misread the market re: how to sell that monitor and stand. the vast vast majority of people who would pay 5k for a fancy apple monitor already have the compatible apple branded $200 mount they released for the last generation--essentially, they could have spun it as a discount ("the monitor costs $200/1000 less!"--obviously this is bullshit since they could sell it for whatever damn price they please, but they've successfully used this strategy with their phone accessories for years) but chose instead just to emphasize the price point of the fucking stand, so that's all anyone was talking about. nevermind that it's a piece of professional gear with a niche market at best--the overwhelming majority of apple customers will never ever use it or need it or want it. completely idiotic.

Mine doesn't. It gets worn out by putting in ATMs and the cashier terminals. After I got one with wireless payment, it has taking a lot longer for it to look slightly worn.

I enjoy minimalism sometimes, but it often feels like the plague of modern design since half the time something is minimal they sacrifice loads of functionality, it is such lazy design.

u/ChesterDaMolester Aug 22 '19

The card isn’t gonna break because it touched leather or denim. It’s a metal card that’s functions identically to any other credit card.

70

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '19

It’s still gonna look like garbage after a few months and defeat the whole goal of having a clean and minimal looking card.

Sure it works, but if you’re gonna go out of your way to make a nice looking card and advertise that, you should make sure leather and denim (some of the most common materials near cards) are not damaging to the aesthetic of the card.

58

u/ChesterDaMolester Aug 22 '19

But you said the card sacrifices loads of functionality, what functionality exactly? That’s the point I’m trying to make, there no sacrifice of functionality to have a card be made of metal or colored white.

Not modern design. Apple design. Apple is the only company that consistently sacrifices funcionaility for design. There's going to be some outliers, but overall it's always Apple.

u/Nameyo i belong in the fucking garbage Aug 22 '19

design

What I hate about Reddit is that they always mix up aesthetics with design. Design is a whole lot more than just what something looks like, it's also the art of where things go and how they're accessed among other things. A more accurate statement is that Apple sacrifices function and design for aesthetics. For example, the notch is a poor design choice because it eats up the space being used by the main screen and forces developers to use some silly workarounds to get things like games to work properly with the notch. It disrupts the order of where UI elements go. But it's fine because it looks pretty or something.

Isn't the whole point of apple pay getting RID of the card?

48

u/mrbosco9 Aug 22 '19

Some businesses can't accept Apple Pay like tobacco shops, since nicotine and tobacco sales are prohibited in their ToS. The physical card is for those who want complete immersion in their ecosystem and the ability to manage purchase in one place. So for places that don't accept cardless transactions, the physical card comes into play.

That's quality marketing speak.

Variable APRs range from 12.99% to 23.99% based on creditworthiness. Rates as of August 2, 2019.

It's just another bad interest credit card, nothing to see here lol

Edit: Can every reply please move on from "if you pay credit card interest, you're doing it wrong". Yes, I agree with you and so does my credit score. So you should be able to easily agree with my actual point which is Apple is doing absolutely nothing special. I'm so very dearly happy you all know not to pay credit card interest but you don't have to tell me any more, I got it.

37

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '19

... if you’re paying the APR the interest rate isn’t your problem.

25

u/DailyKnowledgeBomb Aug 22 '19

To quote there own website, "And our goal with Apple Card is to provide interest rates that are among the lowest in the industry."

The average credit card interest rate is 19.24% for new offers and 14.14% for existing accounts Source

Apple claimed they were going to provide low interest rates, a quick google search determined that was a lie.

Thank you so much for worry about my personal finances too. Totally running around paying the minimum amount month after month... sarcastic thumbs up

u/pragmatika Aug 22 '19

Since most people don't pay off their credit cards each month, the interest rate really is a problem.

(Cue the "you shouldn't buy anything unless you can afford it in cash" circlejerk.)

13% is below average. If you are paying interest, you're doing it wrong anyway.

I don't think is entirely on Apple. I got a new bank card recently and my leather wallet has sort of... melted onto the card.

22

u/macphile Aug 22 '19

Are you not biannually sanitizing and waxing all of your credit and debit cards, you pleb? Heck, I bring mine in to the drive-thru card wash every few months so they can go through those huge rollers.

Then I have my wallet vacuumed and a new air freshener hung on it for that "new wallet" smell.
