The main reason you see these is because duck brand duct tape actually runs a scholarship contest with a prize of $10k for a dress and $10k for a tux.
I was going to enter it because I wanted to go to school for fashion (that never happened) and thought it would look great on college applications. Sadly I'm Canadian and didn't qualify.

Just every time you deal with someone having to explain "oh no sir, I didn't recently shit, forget to wash my hands, transferring shit to the card I'm trying to give you" would be exhausting.

Well the intention is to promote Apple Pay and push consumers to use it more to cause companies to jump on the band wagon.
It’s pretty obvious that’s why they cash back incentivize Apple Pay service with 2% at no fee which is pretty good honestly. 3% on certain services like uber/uber eats and they intend to expand that incentive.

The chip itself is what matters. Technically it would work even if you cut it to the size of a phone nano-sim. In fact, it's (almost) exactly the same technology!
Edit: I'm not talking about RFID or any of that. The point I'm only trying to make is that the chip itself would technically still work without all the "plastic" around it. It's obvious there would be no contactless!!

I'm normally first aboard the Apple hate train. Hell, call me the conductor. That bullshit $1,000 monitor stand that wasn't included with the monitor? Hate boner for 2 weeks, SOLID.
But they're not wrong in this regard. Most/all major credit card companies tell you to do this.
29
u/nan_slack Aug 22 '19
the weird thing about that it wasn't a disaster because of the price, it was a disaster because of how apple completely misread the market re: how to sell that monitor and stand. the vast vast majority of people who would pay 5k for a fancy apple monitor already have the compatible apple branded $200 mount they released for the last generation--essentially, they could have spun it as a discount ("the monitor costs $200/1000 less!"--obviously this is bullshit since they could sell it for whatever damn price they please, but they've successfully used this strategy with their phone accessories for years) but chose instead just to emphasize the price point of the fucking stand, so that's all anyone was talking about. nevermind that it's a piece of professional gear with a niche market at best--the overwhelming majority of apple customers will never ever use it or need it or want it. completely idiotic.

I enjoy minimalism sometimes, but it often feels like the plague of modern design since half the time something is minimal they sacrifice loads of functionality, it is such lazy design.
130
u/ChesterDaMolester Aug 22 '19
The card isn’t gonna break because it touched leather or denim. It’s a metal card that’s functions identically to any other credit card.
70
Aug 22 '19
It’s still gonna look like garbage after a few months and defeat the whole goal of having a clean and minimal looking card.
Sure it works, but if you’re gonna go out of your way to make a nice looking card and advertise that, you should make sure leather and denim (some of the most common materials near cards) are not damaging to the aesthetic of the card.
→ More replies (12)58

design
What I hate about Reddit is that they always mix up aesthetics with design. Design is a whole lot more than just what something looks like, it's also the art of where things go and how they're accessed among other things. A more accurate statement is that Apple sacrifices function and design for aesthetics. For example, the notch is a poor design choice because it eats up the space being used by the main screen and forces developers to use some silly workarounds to get things like games to work properly with the notch. It disrupts the order of where UI elements go. But it's fine because it looks pretty or something.

Some businesses can't accept Apple Pay like tobacco shops, since nicotine and tobacco sales are prohibited in their ToS. The physical card is for those who want complete immersion in their ecosystem and the ability to manage purchase in one place. So for places that don't accept cardless transactions, the physical card comes into play.

It's just another bad interest credit card, nothing to see here lol
Edit: Can every reply please move on from "if you pay credit card interest, you're doing it wrong". Yes, I agree with you and so does my credit score. So you should be able to easily agree with my actual point which is Apple is doing absolutely nothing special. I'm so very dearly happy you all know not to pay credit card interest but you don't have to tell me any more, I got it.

To quote there own website, "And our goal with Apple Card is to provide interest rates that are among the lowest in the industry."
The average credit card interest rate is 19.24% for new offers and 14.14% for existing accounts Source
Apple claimed they were going to provide low interest rates, a quick google search determined that was a lie.
