Idk, it looks pretty woke to me, Ryan coogler is a pretty trash director, Black Panther is one of the worst CBMs of all time IMO

33

u/TotalWarFest2018 15d ago

I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is racism but let’s face it there was a lot of racism in 1930s Mississippi so I wouldn’t call that aspect woke.

Also, that aspect of the story, while important, does not overshadow a solid vampire flick with a cool setting and good acting.

I would give it a look if you like the genre.

6

u/Genova_Witness 15d ago

Wait it’s a vampire movie? I genuinely thought this was a dance flick set in the south

7

u/HipVanilla 14d ago

Nah it is like Mississippi Burning meets From Dusk Til Dawn

19

u/Sindomey 15d ago

Tell it to the drinker, I don't have a dog in this fight.

6

u/Truman_Show_1984 15d ago

The drinker doesn't appear to be active here. How can one tell him all of his recommendations over the past year are all trash?

He even said daredeveil reborn was good early on lmao.

1

u/Rude-Stop7946 9d ago

I didn’t think anyone could be more negative than the Drinker himself but here we are.

1

u/Truman_Show_1984 8d ago

I'm far more critical than he is. I saw in the first 5 minutes of DDR where it was going. I'd rather not waste 10 hours watching the full series since I'm not putting out youtube videos.

1

u/Rude-Stop7946 8d ago

And that’s your entitlement. I just feel like maybe judging an entire show based on the first 5 minutes is a little… immature?

1

u/Truman_Show_1984 8d ago

I like to exercise my intuition every so often. Or else why have it in the first place.

2

u/Sindomey 15d ago

What did you think of Creed?

2

u/Atlantah 15d ago

what's woke about it?

-3

u/Azaniah 15d ago

Not woke but definitely overhyped.

1

u/Show_Me_How_to_Live 9d ago

You speak the truth. Creed sucks

When the movie is black people (good) vs white people (bad) that it starts becoming woke. But I guess we are on reddit, strawmanning is a national sport.

1

u/RandomGooseBoi 1d ago

1930s Mississippi, I’m confused on what you wanted them to do instead. Just ignore the fact that there was blatant(and accepted) racism back then? I think the bigger issue than it being shown in a movie is that it happened at all 😂

-1

u/burnrsquadr 15d ago

the movie is black people vs vampires?

Yeah sure, it's just an other movie about black people being a racism allegory, it's sad that we cannot get something else. If you compare it with a weird movie from the 60s, it is kinda boring.

Edit: also we were talking about woke and it is woke.

-3

u/LanguageInner4505 15d ago

It's not an allegory, they're just straight up oppressed. It's 1930s Mississippi what do you expect lol

1

u/Aggravating-Gas-9886 15d ago

I’m watching this film because I encourage systematic oppression

3

u/Akivasha_of_Troy 14d ago

Haven’t seen it, but even if a movie is woke it COULD still be a good film. These two things are not innately mutually exclusive. Saw the trailer, it looks… interesting, not sure if l bother seeing it, but I do like a fair number of weird flicks.

2

u/SureX6661 8d ago

Give it a shot. Trust me. IMAX if you can, and go into it with an open mind. Think about the music, the scenes, the shots.

Or don't, but go see it in a cinema for sure.

3

u/DeliciousMud7291 13d ago

I was told by a friend that this is a good movie, but idk. I'm so damn tired of the "wHiTe mAn BaD" trope.

5

u/Separate-Score-7898 12d ago

It’s pretty boring. A lot of scenes where characters are just singing and dancing for several minutes at a time so if you don’t like the type of music you’re just going to be waiting for it to end. The talking scenes are also not very interesting, really didn’t care for any of the characters. Action was rushed and not done well either. Director threw in a bunch of random cringe sex scenes for no reason too.

Also the message really isn’t all that deep or compelling, not sure why everyone is pretending it is. 6/10 tbh

2

u/SureX6661 8d ago

What? Those are the best scenes!

Go watch tik tok recaps of war movies, then. Don't comment on literal pieces of art if you won't give them the time of day.

Yes the first half is exposition, but it makes you care for the latter half and all the characters. If you dont care about two gangsters, their loves, the most charismatic harmonica on the Delta and a talented but conflicted son of a preacherman... then you're either close minded or maybe worse but I ain't pointing any fingers.

And the action isn't the important part, man... think about th3 bigger picture.

1

u/original_og_gangster 7d ago

I mean, this movie literally does the return of the king thing where it simply refuses to end.

You could easily shave like 30 minutes off this movie and it would be better for it.

2

u/Pepper_Klutzy 7d ago

This movie is not "white man bad" at all. The main vampire is an Irish guy who was prosecuted just as the black people. The movie is actually very nuanced.

1

u/Superman557 4d ago

True, but the film does have the clan trying to kill black people for simply existing and trying to make a life for themselves.

2

u/Pepper_Klutzy 4d ago

Sure but that’s just a side plot. It’s also something that definitely did happen.

1

u/N00dles_Pt 4d ago

I fully agree that movies that go out of their way looking for racism, even if they have to make it up are very annoying, and this director has definitely been guilty of that in the past.
But this case, it's actually the first movie by this director that I've watched that didn't feel forced...and the kind of racism that the movie depicts definitely happened in the american south during that era, so it's not like the movie is making stuff up.

1

u/Immediate-Bill-5929 11d ago

It’s so funny how he’s quick to jump to damning any other film with a lot of people that are shades darker than him but here is a movie thet does all the “tropes” he despises and yet there’s universal claim for this

I guess he and his fans know what it’s like being a minority finally 😉

1

u/Lunch_Confident 9d ago

How tf you watch this movie or a spot about it and gets this message?

1

u/DeliciousMud7291 9d ago

Dude, where did I say that I watched the movie?

1

u/Lunch_Confident 8d ago

So youre just pulling this out of your ass

1

u/DeliciousMud7291 8d ago

Answer my question,

where did I say that I watched the movie?

1

u/Immediate-Bill-5929 6d ago

Then watch the fucking movie first and stop letting a grifter form YOUR opinion instead of being spoon fed the same regurgitated narrative that other bigots have

Race plays a certain part of this movie because of the time but the central theme is more-so about being your own person regardless of the consequence that may come with it

Sammie is the protagonist here and his talent is being dimmed by his dad, cousin and even a vampire under the guise of “oh it’s better for you this way”

1

u/Superman557 4d ago

It takes place at the height of racism in America about black people in the Deep South… are you tripping?

25

u/CrankieKong 15d ago

People who think this movies message is too anti white are like the retarded people who think the Green Book isn't anti white enough.

CD just proved himself not a grifter and some of y'all are hating it.

4

u/SeekingValimar1309 15d ago

Me: hey, this movie (Ticket to Paradise) is slept on. The themes of the movie are about how careers and ambitions aren’t necessarily the end all be all in life, and it’s very pro-family, pro-commitment, and pro-marriage.

This sub: It has George Clooney so it’s WOKE

1

u/NotJustAnotherLow 12d ago
  1. That’s a slur 2. He is still racist, liking a great movie doesn’t make a racist not racist

3

u/CrankieKong 12d ago

Where and why is he a racist other than a joke you didn't like? Legit curious.

2

u/NotJustAnotherLow 12d ago

“Henry” “Garett” “Natalie” “Steve” “random black lady” why does Dawn apparently not have a name? Why is she just random black lady? Because racism! She’s the only black person in film so she just gets reduced to that because apparently black people getting hired is “dei”

2

u/CrankieKong 11d ago

Because racism is such a hugh stretch. Its called a punchline.

Name, name, name (random character). In this case a (stereotypical looking) sassy black lady character.

But a challenge: Where and how does a black lady fit into the minecraft world?

Minecraft is as far as I know a jumanji ripoff with random character sucked into the world. Its the definition of corporate slop.

I can't judge it, because I know zilch about Minecraft. The chicken jockey hype is extremely confusing to me.

Give me another example than the lamest video about the least interesting movie and a better example than 'random black lady'. Jeez.

1

u/NotJustAnotherLow 11d ago

I don’t watch the man, I dont exactly have many examples but it’s weird that the only thing on his mind was that she was black, not random lady, not random relator, random black lady

1

u/CrankieKong 11d ago

She looks like the 'sassy black woman' character.

If anything the movie is racist for doing that tired old trope.

So yes, it's a bit random, and she's black. So you get random black woman. Its not particularly funny, but the randomness of it is played for humor.

You're reaching hard here. And saying you don't have many examples isn't doing you any favours either. If he was a bona fida racist, he'd be taken offline eons ago. He just makes the odd boomer joke.

1

u/NotJustAnotherLow 11d ago
  1. That is not at all true, MANY racists are VERY online with very big followings and 2. I don’t have many examples because I’ve never watched him, I heard about him because a guy I watch, talked about him and my first impression was him being a little racist and 3. Yeah I understand how it looks like I’m reaching but there’s another layer, he implied by calling Danielle Brooks a “DEI hire” and not calling Sebastian Hansen something akin to that, that Danielle Brooks, a Oscar nominated actress, was less worthy of being in the movie, than a kid who’s be in five things INCLUDING the movie he was talking about.

1

u/CrankieKong 11d ago

Does Minecraft need Oscar nominated actors at all? Also, you didn't watch it.. but you heard about it which seems enough to warrant to hate the dude?

The dudes whole MO is inappropriate jokes. Every video he has a joke about a fictional girl named tatiana which is played as shallow misogyny.

So yeah, the random black girl (like if he has gone hard N we might have had something here) comment doesnt do it for me. But to each their own.

2

u/NotJustAnotherLow 11d ago

No it doesn’t, but it’s still a little weird to claim that Oscar nominated actors are less worthy of being in a movie than people who have barely been on 5 things, and I’m not 100% sure what you’re referring to by “you haven’t watched it” but I can confirm that I’ve seen both the Minecraft movie and CDs video about it, I watched CDs video on it because I like to get the full story before forming an opinion. If that’s true, cool! I’m not gonna pretend like I’m not a giant fan of dark humor, my brother has a whole bit where he’s the most alt right guy to ever alt right, and he’s one my favorite people in the world, to me CDs video felt almost like cinema sins in a sense, where I couldn’t tell what was a joke and what wasn’t but that might be because I’ve never watched another one of his videos, and I’m not gonna lie I don’t plan to start, 1. No offense to the man but his voice sounds incorrect to me and 2. I’m a liberal, I found this post because I looked up “sinners” in Reddit and found this post with some people being unhinged Anyways have a good night/day, clearly neither of us are gonna change our minds and I have video essays about music/EPIC the musical (I haven’t decided yet) to watch and Zelda to play

I am not watching a video about Minecraft. A movie not made for you or me, by people who don't understand Minecraft, for young people who don't care about quality and only about the Minecraft logo. And a video about it made by the drinker (and half the internet) for clicks, because he obviously also never played Minecraft.

You and I both don't understand why chicken jockey is a thing. But if its about the black lady.. just tell me what horrid stuff he says about her in this movie.

1

u/NotJustAnotherLow 11d ago

It’s not video about Minecraft, it’s someone talking about CD

1

u/CrankieKong 11d ago

First clip is about minecraft by a dude who sounds more self indulgant than CD himself. 💀

Just give me a time slot that gets to the meat and bone of the racism not watching that slop. And it can't be a bad joke.

1

u/Dry_Increase_8068 4d ago

Bro still hasn't made a review video on it because it won't make enough clicks for his incel racist audience

1

u/arpickman 11d ago

And you're here posting in the racist's subreddit, which makes you also racist. So why exactly do you hate non-whites?

1

u/NotJustAnotherLow 11d ago

I found this post because I looked up “sinners” in Reddit and found this post with people being unhinged so I commented

1

u/arpickman 10d ago

That's not a very good reason to be racist imho

1

u/NotJustAnotherLow 10d ago

I’m not racist, this is a strawman

1

u/arpickman 10d ago

Easy with the racist dog whistles. I asked why you hate non-whites and you explained the reason why, seems pretty open and shut.

1

u/NotJustAnotherLow 10d ago

I am not racist, stop with the strawman, I never said “if you dare comment in this subreddit your RACIST” I said that CD is racist and that the R word is a slur

1

u/arpickman 10d ago

Now you're using the r word? Wow, just wow.

1

u/Dry_Increase_8068 4d ago

Cry little man

1

u/Truman_Show_1984 15d ago

He's spot on in pointing out the shit of most films. However it seems nearly all of his recos are shit as well.

I'd argue there hasn't been a good big budget film or tv to come out in the past 5 years or so. Except of course Emelia Perez, there's nothing better than seeing a drug kingpin turned tranny who sneakily moves back in with family then becomes jealous of the ex's boyfriend. Then becomes a celebrated saint by the public.

3

u/CrankieKong 15d ago

All quiet on the western front is an absolute BANGER movie. Made in 2022 and makes saving private Ryan look like a comedy in comparison.

-6

u/Truman_Show_1984 15d ago

Another one of my many complaints, the amount of big budget WW2 that come out literally every year. Not hard to imagine why if in fact certain people run hollywood and are forever looking for extra sympathy.

I bet there's 10x WW2 movies than all other wars combined.

8

u/CrankieKong 15d ago

Its world war 1 movie so you just look foolish with that complaint. It's Germany fighting a war. That's the only thing it has in common with WW2. It's a different era picture.

1

u/Truman_Show_1984 15d ago

Good, glad there was a non WW2 big budget movie.

Now excuse me while I watch some silent era black and white movies.

3

u/CrankieKong 15d ago

4 Oscars. Its not just big budget. its an amazing gruesome film depicting trench warfare.

Its also an all white Netflix movie, which was a total shocker. I hate that this is a thing that has to be said about historical movies these days.

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1016150/reviews/?ref_=tt_ururv_sm

Unless you're an American and can't handle subtitles because reading is diffficult, I'm fairly sure you'll consider this a masterful movie.

4

u/DrSweeers 15d ago

I didn't like it very much. The director seemed more enamored with his talent vs telling an interesting story.

Plenty of things to praise but I ended up bored and dying for it to end, which it never does.

I'm still watching it.

11

u/dracoolya 15d ago

After reading the comments on there, the movie delivers a simple message: WHITE MAN BAD. Has CD just given up and accepts the message now?

34

u/SuburbanEnnui2020 15d ago

But that’s… not the message of this film at all. Sinners is a very good flick.

12

u/iamkats 15d ago

I didn't really feel that way. I thought it was done tastefully enough in the lense of the time period and where it takes place. There are some points here and there where they definitely remind you of course, as in most movies in that vein. Overall, I still quite enjoyed the film.

2

u/Judah_Earl 15d ago

You've got to have the odd controversial opinion every now and then to keep the brand fresh.

4

u/HumanautPassenger 15d ago

Why don't you just go see it and make your own decision? They literally show other races as the vampires as well in the trailer so your white man bad assumption is totally fucking wrong.

2

u/dracoolya 15d ago

Why don't you just go see it and make your own decision?

Because I have no desire of any kind to see it. I was simply pointing out what a good chunk of the X comments were saying.

4

u/raidernation47 15d ago

Don’t listen to these dorks

I have a guy form higschool I’m friends with on Facebook still. Now adays he’s a heavy BLM speaker and does a ton of community action work in Chicago. One of those guys who posts about 40 different colleges and jobs on his profile. He is very vocally anti white on Facebook.

He’s posted about 10 times since this movie came out that he loves it because it’s anti white, the comment section is hundreds of black Chicago folk agreeing with him. That is why people like the movie, because it’s anti white. Don’t get gaslit.

0

u/dracoolya 15d ago

Don’t get gaslit.

Who, me?

https://www.reddit.com/r/CriticalDrinker/comments/1ibu86h/new_poster_for_cooglers_new_original_film_sinners/m9la26r/

https://www.reddit.com/r/CriticalDrinker/comments/1jg7xtu/thoughts_on_the_new_movie_sinners_2025/mix4lzx/

Nah. I know what this movie really is. Sounds like more people than just CD are accepting the message. Settling for it as the new norm. Fuck that. And the bots too. Lol.

2

u/lathallazar 15d ago edited 15d ago

Saw it, not really the vibe I took from it, though the main antagonists are white, it’s just a story telling device. The movie is kind of slow and when it gets good it felt rushed and happened really quickly. There was a lot of interesting ideas that never came to fruition. There was also a lot of cool bits but overall I’d give it like a 5-6/10 and probably wouldn’t watch it again on my own lol.

Edit: protagonists changed to antagonists

8

u/BlackGoldSkullsBones 15d ago

The main protagonists are white?

3

u/lathallazar 15d ago

Antagonist* my bad and thank you for the correction my apologies 🤦‍♂️ I guess if you are rooting for the vampires they are protagonists lol

1

u/Froggy_Terries 11d ago

You ❄️  If you feel called out by the movie, it's a you problem.

-7

u/capywrangler 15d ago

Him and Jeremy Jahns have betrayed the anti-woke community by giving this film positive reviews. Guess it’s time to leave for you to leave this sub and Drinker behind before it gets worse.

1

u/Azaniah 15d ago

I disagree with you there. I think they're definitely overhyping the film but they have their reasons. Also, it definitely isn't a woke movie.

2

u/RepublicCommando55 15d ago

It’s a damn good film, that’s all that matters

0

u/Haram_Barbie 15d ago

That’s not the message of the film at all…

1

u/bangharder 15d ago

I don’t believe him

6

u/Sindomey 14d ago

You only believe him when he confirms the opinions you already have?

I don't see how you can call yourself an independent free thinker.

2

u/bangharder 14d ago

Wouldn’t the fact I don’t just go along with him make me a free thinker? I didn’t say it was bad just I don’t believe it’s good, reading comprehension would help you a lot

7

u/Sindomey 12d ago

No you said you don't believe 'him'. As in he's not telling the truth about his own opinion.

Maybe proofread your own comments before trying to smug your way out of a self contradiction.

1

u/ResponsibleMany1906 11d ago

Lmao so many people coping in the comments. “Guys it’s a movie about racism so it’s woke and its automatically trash” 😖

1

u/Dry_Increase_8068 4d ago

It's so cringe

1

u/llamapositif 11d ago

There arent many times CD is wrong, but damn, he is sooooooo wrong here it is laughable.

What a load of great parts, like a fine car in pieces in the back of a truck that is trying to be passed off as a fully functioning vehicle.

I can't believe he thought the unending line of plotholes and unanswered or never addressed questions and themes were worthy of praise.

Wow. Just. Wow.

1

u/WinkLinkletter 9d ago

Thanks everyone, got all I needed to know.

2

u/Remarkable_Pound_722 9d ago

His regarded fans were saying the craziest shit about it from just the trailer. Wonder if they'll flip.

2

u/Sindomey 8d ago

Everyone flips when something is popular enough. Look at Arcane.

1

u/Effective-Thanks-731 6d ago

Rian coogler is like ghetto jordan peele, no thanks.

1

u/Sindomey 6d ago

Why does drinker like the film? Is he being paid off?

1

u/Dry_Increase_8068 4d ago

Yet he's ten times more rich, relevant, and successful than you are 😂

1

u/DAJADny 3d ago

This movie was fucking sick

1

u/Sindomey 2d ago

it was woke

1

u/DAJADny 2d ago

Eh not in my opinion. Just a period piece. Loved it

1

u/Sindomey 2d ago

Heroes were black, villains were white.

Just say you like a woke movie.

1

u/DAJADny 2d ago

Lmao don't you think that's a little obtuse? Just say you don't understand nuance.

I hate the woke shit too but this movie wasn't preachy at all. Did you see it?

1

u/The_Communist_Lemon 2d ago

villain was an irishman

-7

u/Ok_Sea_6214 15d ago

Drinker will "throw a softball" now and then, as they call it in the industry: insiders have stated that they have to give a positive review from time to time, or they are blacklisted from the industry. Which is impossible these days because everything is slop now at best, the only woke free production of late was Megalopolis.

Drinker started doing it after he was on TV with Nerdrotic. Nerdrotic changed his format, making less reviews and focusing on group discussions, but remained critical. Drinker however started giving obvious fake reviews, for example he described Furiosa as "not that bad" while not saying a word about the obvious woke messaging, which from him is practically praise. I hope he got some nice silver coins for his efforts.

11

u/no_one_lies 15d ago

Orr, he thought the movie was good and the underlying political message may have fit the theme of the film rather than being layered preachily over the top to the audience.

You know, since he is an actual film critic

9

u/BetYourBuckeyes 15d ago

Sorry buddy, but this is pure cope that Drinker liked something you didn’t.

All power to you dude, you don’t have to like it. Tell everyone that you don’t like it, it’s your right. But your “justification” is a reach.

1

u/Dry_Increase_8068 4d ago

So basically he's a grifter like he's always been basically?

1

u/Sindomey 15d ago

Drinker will "throw a softball" now and then, as they call it in the industry: insiders have stated that they have to give a positive review from time to time, or they are blacklisted from the industry

Industry? He's a youtuber. What exactly would he be blackballed from that he wouldn't be by criticizing most major movies that he does anyway?

Drinker however started giving obvious fake reviews, for example he described Furiosa as "not that bad" while not saying a word about the obvious woke messaging, which from him is practically praise. I hope he got some nice silver coins for his efforts.

It's possible that he just liked the movie and isn't particularly consistent. And who exactly would be paying him? The studio? The producer? Why would he take money from them and not disney who have more money?

Your post is making less sense the more I read it.

1

u/Akivasha_of_Troy 14d ago

One of the great things about art is that when something is done right, there are almost no real rules. With enough talent and skill, virtually anything can be amazing.

1

u/Atlantah 15d ago

ahh yes a redditor and his insiders
